This just in

Wont matter. He'll win 7-8 gms if he's lucky. The new D coordinator will be out on the streets with him. Realistically who could we get ? I cant see a homerun hire at DC either, especially with the circumstances surrounding Kelly.

If we hear nothing on Sunday (after the championship games) then it is the status quo. Damn.

Jack better go get Strong!

OK -- flip the script (hypothetically) -- assume Kelly stays and then proceeds to go 11-1 and get ND into the playoffs. Is all forgiven?

Coach Kelly is looking for a new DC. He is going to be back on the sidelines for ND.

He never left. And even though he was looking - he's delusional if he thought some school would hire him after a 4-8 campaign. And you add in all his other baggage. He had no shot for a new job - unless it was back to the MAC. He agent is delusional as well.

BK wants out as bad as most of the ND fan base wants him out. But, you and Jack and few others are stuck w/ him.

Does not mater who he hires as a D coordinator or a ST coach. The great coaches always have great D's and S.T. regardless of who their unit coaches are - because the great coaches take stock and ownership of all units on the team.

Enjoy your season. I'll be back at games hopefully in 2018 when he's gone for good. Meanwhile I will save some good $$ and put it towards my kids college fund while I take my sabbatical from attending ND games.

When I come back - first person I'll shake down will be Bodi - I want to go to a game w/ that lunatic. I'll get us in the locker room for cocktails after the rally on Friday night - it will be fun and the wait will be worth it. It will make me appreciate it that much more.

You can't make a decision on what you hope will happen or hypothetical's, you must make a decision based on the facts. In 7 years Kelly has had; 1 fantastic season, 1 good season(I would argue 10 wins should be the average), 4 average seasons and 1 horrific season.

Not nearly good enough.

No - because he will pursue a new job and be out of dodge as soon as he can. He wants out. He is not a true ND man. He is a politician pretending to be a football coach. If he wins 9 games plus he's off to a new school or the NFL - some team will be dumb enough to take him off our hands - he will sell himself as a hero for turning around his 4-8 mess.

If he goes 8-4 or worse - he will still have a hard time getting his new job he really wants - I'd think he'd get canned though for an 8-4 or worse. 1 more year into the extension makes the canning not so harsh financially.

Not what I said --- was not about making a decision based on a hope or hypothetical -- it was from a fan perspective -- would the view point of Kelly change if he were to go 11-1 and get ND in the playoffs?

In this scenario, does he win the championship once in the playoffs? Partial forgiveness if so, but he's still on thin ice.

I think it will be hard to change most people's view on Kelly. As it is now apparent he doesn't want to be here. So even if he turns it around he will bail on this program because he wants out. A great season next year is just a way to have other places interested in him again because with that type of season this negative press we are seeing now about him will be gone and other programs will view the 4-8 season as a fluke or uncommon trend under Kelly. So, based on knowing he wants out I don't see any Irish fan can forgive him because even with a great season you can't trust that he will stay.

Sure it would... a little. To carry it further if he won 2 NC in a row it would be much better. If he won 5 NC in a row I would think he was the greatest ND coach of all time.

The problem is, that's not going to happen so I just don't see the point in discussing it.

Watching the ND/USC on TV - you could hear it on TV - the SC fans were chanting - "one more year, one more year" Our opponents love it - they all know they got a great shot of beating ND w/ BK at the helm.

IT's pretty bad when the opposing fan bases love our coach,

Charlie Strong.

Hard for me to imagine that Kelly will be on ND's sidelines next year with not one, but two, recently published articles out there that Kelly has been looking to leave. How do you keep a coach who wants to be elsewhere?

Not that I disagree with your words, but it is also hard to imagine how ND will get rid of this coach, even if we didn't want him anymore. $20mm is no chump change even for ND. Like it or not, I think we are stuck with him for a while.

I really hope that I am wrong, but given all the things that went on with Kelly - who in the right mind will want to hire him for millions, especially now?

Hopefully, the contract has a buyout figure much less than the amount you reference. In any event, how do you keep a guy on the sideline who doesn't want to be there?

78, given all the BS floating around out there, why would you think those reports are accurate? After the last coaching firing/search, I don't believe anything until someone from our athletic department is standing at a podium telling us.

In the 2nd half - I heard it on my TV - the USC students they showed on the screen in the crowd were chanting it - it may of been just those students they were showing in that section - but they were chanting it and anyone taped the game - can go back and re-watch it - I was not "hearing things" - at first it caught me off guard - then I realized what they meant / were saying.

I wouldn't state something like that just to state it - get it a clue. That stadium sits 80,000 fans - maybe where you were sitting you didn't hear it - but it happened w/ the USC fans that were panned on TV - right before a commercial break - and when hearing it - I couldn't tell if a large part of the stadium was doing it - or just the students being shown on TV at the time.

I don't think you are going to get anyone from ND's athletic department to stand on a podium and tell us that Kelly is looking elsewhere.

Why do I think they are accurate? First of all, we know that he was poking around for a new job in January of 2013. So, the idea that he would never leave ND is gone right there. Additionally, a very close friend of mine with an inside source (also class of 1978) tells me the stories are true.
But even if they are not true, they have damaged Kelly very much. It will be extremely hard to convince any recruits to come to ND when it is out there that Kelly himself is trying to leave. You can bet that every other coach will tell recruits about Kelly’s desire to leave ND. (Why would you want to go to ND when the head coach himself is trying to leave? You know Kelly won’t be there for more than a year?) I just don't see how he is going to be able to convince any of the kids he is trying to recruit that he will be around.

Your probably right - but at the time - as bad as ND's special teams were again - I figured it was directed at BK - And it might as well of been for Brian Kelly - the astute USC fans probably meant it for all three.

Even if a couple of few USC students were chanting, who the heck cares what they want anyway? I find what 78 has been saying lately very intriguing because I always find him a voice of reason. Usually this insider angle that some posters try to dangle in front of us is not worthy of discussion, but somehow this does feel noteworthy. What is the staff telling recruits right now I wonder? What is BK telling recruits that have already made a verbal? I was willing to give BK and Jack the benefit of the doubt but now I'm not so sure anymore. Does anyone believe that Bob Davie is worth a second look as HC at ND in the event there is an opening or have too many bridges been burned? Does anyone believe his experience analyzing games from the booth, his age and maturity, and successfully turning around a smaller program earn him a look as a HC at the next level? I believe that if there is an opening, ND should reach for the stars in their search. We have nothing to lose, but, then you have to have a Plan B.

Toby,

I usually agree with your posts, but I have to disagree with you about Davie. In my view, Davie would be a Plan F.

I mentioned Davie as a topic for discussion and not an endorsement from me. Purely hypothetical.

Yes ! I want to go to a game next year when Fleck is coach !
We will follow orders from Fleck ! When he says "rise" we will rise ! When he says making Boat rowing motions we will make boat rowing motions ! The atmosphere on game day will be incredible ! I might want to paint myself Blue and Gold for the occasion.

Later that evening we go to the Linebacker Lounge !
