This is what hiring a good coach will accomplish

Coach Paterson had a couple bad seasons mixed with some great seasons

The key - is 'a couple' of bad seasons mixed with some great ones (for Peterson).....all at TCU

Arguably, Kelly has had one great (regular) season and one good (regular) season mixed with 1 terrible season and mostly average seasons.

Bump...you read way too much into my comment. A slide by slide comparison of the first pick last night to our FSU pick will show the Clemson TE making contact and then immediately turning around back to the QB with hands up in the air as though he is looking for the ball. He sold it! Not saying ND could have done the same or differently, just saying Clemson was able to sell the charade better than we did. Of course, FSU had something to do with this! And as stated, the FSU call was terrible and out of sync with how this play is officiated in college.
Fair enough, but one other difference between the 2 pick plays Clemson ran and the one ND ran against FSU is that FSU had totally blown the coverage. Neither Fuller nor Prosise interfered with anyone who tried to cover Robinson. The guy who was supposed to cover Robinson just stayed in one area as if he was playing zone while the other 2 DBs played man. On both pick plays last night the defender who tried to cover the intended receiver was actually taken out of the play by the pick. But, as you say, the Clemson receivers did sell the play both times so I agree with the no calls. My main point was that what happened in the ND-FSU game was less egregious than what Clemson did and never should have been called. It sounds like we both agree.

To quote John McKay's I'd be in favor of your execution. It would increase the football IQ of this forum by 20 points at a minimum.
To quote Herman Boone, "I run six plays, split veer. It's like novocaine. Just give it time, it always works."

It's a good, reasonable question. So far crickets though for the answer.

For what it's worth, I do give Kelly somewhat of a pass for both 2014 and 2015 because the injuries were just crazy, especially in 2015. By the same token, we lost a lot of bodies on defense in 2014, which really cost us late.

That said, there are many other things that can be hung on Kelly in those and other years that have for me outweighed the bad breaks he has received.

Clemson executed two obvious picks not just one. I thought when the Clemson player threw his arms in the air it made it even more obvious since it didn't look like he was even trying to make an effort to look like a receiver just a player making a TD call or something. The ND pick looked less obvious IMO.

Through different eyes.... Regardless, it's a tough play to defend and to officiate, and my bitch about the FSU call was that you never see the call on a game deciding play in the closing minutes of a game.

I was so excited when Corey Robinson caught that pass that I ran into the other room and told my wife the Irish won ! A half minute later I told her never mind. She is used to me telling her the Irish won only to tell her afterwards they lost. You have to be tough to be an Irish fan.

Yea, my victory yell quickly turned into expletive laced screams at the TV over being cheated.

as to the OP title:

we are pretty well aware of what bad coaching can accomplish! and a generation was borne and now attending college w/o knowing a decent ND head coach. Amazing.

Now the bar is 6-6 or 5-7 and a trip to the 'what-cha-ma-call-it bowl'. That is what is acceptable today by so called Irish "fans". If we could do that without players being arrested, caught cheating,or...maybe Coach 4 & 8 will finally show progress. Mediocrity is so comfortable.

Its the Obamization of ND Football.

before ND finally sends Kelly packing: you realize a generation will have gone from learning to read to getting drivers licences and maybe even voting w/o a meaningful post season W! Mind boggling!

but all your posts are ignorant, and you continue to post

and do your parents know there are tools to prevent you from using a computer unsupervised?
Sorry the lobotomy wasn't successful. Did you find real estate next to Sanford's house.?

Nothing of those coaches can be compared. That's a massive insult to those coaches. Massive.

As far as more excuses for our lousy season or stagnate progress under Kelly...that's all this is. Excuses. Everyone else deals with graduation and early exits for the pros but apparently our cupboard is more bare because of the different aisle thing. I don't know.
Actually I do know.

The elite programs give proper time to the backups because they know they are one play away from entering.

We don't spend any time on those players and when they have to enter the game Its a disaster
Totally inaccurate. Saban, Meyer, all the great coaches hold the players accountable. It's a common trait among winning coaches. Saban's comments post gAme are very similar to Kelly's. He said players didn't make plays and called out a specific stupid penalty. This is exactly what Kelly does, but the whiners here start talking like Kelly should be all kumbaya and blame the coaching when players miss assignments and tackles.

WRONG.

Kelly blames everything but himself. As a last resort he and only a last resort does he take ownership for stupidity.

He in no way should be compared to the great coaches of today....because until Brian Kelly starts putting his players in the best possible position to succeed he has no room to say anything about any player.

Notice how Bama really dumbed down the offense for the frosh hurts. Now even in the scaled down form if hurts made a bad play or missed a play...fine call it out....however Kelly is still dreaming up strategic mystery plays for first and goal from the 4 empty set five wides.

He's great between the 20's ...everything else he is numb to recognizing any good football. Red zone efficiency, tackling, route running, raw emotion, SPECIAL teams, etc etc etc.

When he starts doing all he can to put his team in the best possible situation to succeed...then he can open his trap.

The players are trying. Looking for a leader...it's just Kelly is leading them into horrible dangerous territory.

Sincerely,
37 drop backs in a hurricane.
