This is the question all Kelly supporters need to answer

There aren't any BK supporters. That label won't fly just because our opinions on how to handle the matter differ. Every Irish fan is upset. We are not blind to what is going on. The team does not look well coached, especially this far into the season. Everyone knows that. Here's the rub. So called "Kelly supporters" are realists knowing we don't call the shots. We understand that despite the wishful thinking of some around here, we want what's best for the players, not our own bragging egos. We know that despite the wishful thinking of some around here, BK has not lost the team and that is a very important detail. We also are citizens of Realville and chuckle at every new potential candidate that pops up around here without any ability to interview or vet any of these names. The anti-BK crowd seem to want to lash out at the rest of us but the rest of us has nothing to do with game decisions, play on the field, or the ability to hire and fire. You guys act like we are in control. We are on a free message board just like everyone else with not one single ability to retain or release BK. I suggest a total blackout of all things Irish football because "Irish Wins Matter".

This is just one of those years where the wheels fell off early and often, and no one was able to put them back on correctly.

Probably the only thing done correctly was getting rid of BVG --and it should have been done sooner. The "new" DC did an good job in maintaining things overall, but is apparent that Kelly needs to outside his comfort zone and get a high level DC.

Also -- Kelly really needs to define what offense he wants -- again, 2nd and 1, 3rd and 1 on the goal line and he is spreading people out -- line up the big boys and ram it in -- if this can cannot muster 1 yard when it counts....something is terribly wrong. Not getting a TD at that point hurt bad -- that is simply on Kelly and his decision.

Exactly. Because some to choose to view things realistically and recognize that Kelly will return next season doesn't mean that they are happy with how things are. Because some have reservations about some of the potential replacements for Kelly doesn't mean that they necessarily think Kelly is doing a great job. Because some recognize that some of the names mentioned as replacements for Kelly as being totally unrealistic and ludicrous doesn't mean that they are thrilled with the state of the program. I don't know why some posters find this so difficult to comprehend.

I've posted over and over and over again that Kelly's lack of any short ydg package is a problem ... what should be an easy problem to solve .... apparently this is rocket science for Kelly ... he doesn't get it

BINGO!

I was a huge Kelly supporter - looked at 2012 and last year and thought they were getting closer. Thought he had some bad luck with Golson in 2013 but figured he was the guy and if we end up in a Bowl against Iowa last year instead of OSU, we finish the year on a high note and go into the draft with three first rounders. I think he has recruited well for ND and we have the talent to play with anyone except Bama and OSU.

But when he did not replace BVG, pick a QB, lost to a bunch of horrible teams I jumped off the bandwagon. Too many times unprepared, bad in game decisions, no adjustments, bad game plans (NC State). Move on and get someone new - Fleck, the Temple coach. If not and you do not want to pay him, get Strong as DC tomorrow and hope for the best.

Accurately describes my thought progression as well. I especially find fault with Kelly's decision to hire BVG, and then sticking with him when it was obvious that his scheme and coaching were a disaster at the college level. Personally, would love to see a new HC and newly invigorated program as I have Kelly fatigue, but absent that, want to see him move quickly on a quality DC and Strong would fill this bill and make a huge impact on recruiting that side of the ball.

If Kelly was coaching at another school, with the same record he currently has over the past seven seasons, would you want him to coach at ND? This is how Jack and crew should evaluate Kelly.
What exactly is a "BK supporter"? Right now he is our coach. I want he and his team to coach/play their best game of the year on Saturday and we beat USC. Does that make me a BK supporter?

if at this point you are not able to discern a ND fan from the transient BK fan then no explanation will suffice.

I guess that makes me a supporter of that coach too. I am definitely madder than a hornet that was just swatted, but I want ND to win every time they enter a stadium. I also recognize that I have no power to sway the powers that be on that matter. I'm just a fan and tired of all this ridiculous noise from well intended fans about firing the coach or athletic director. We have no voice in the matter even when it's yelled from the highest mountain top.

I've been a huge Kelly supporter. But I think he failed badly this year and has proven the job is just too much for him. I hope he makes a move. He is leaving behind a solid team with lot's of talent for whoever replaces him. A team that is getting better and better, it's not their fault they are so young.Kelly needs to be able to coach a team that allows him to bring in jucos to keep his depth. He will do well and it would be a good move for him to leave now on his own terms.

If Kelly can make a jump to a quality program, he should do it. Alternately, if Jack has anyone lined up in his rolodex that is board approved and ready to accept, he should bring him in. Even after his debacle at Texas, I could see them bring in Strong. Keep the current DC and the offense coaching staff. I think they could do just as well as Kelly has done, so there is not much of a chance things could get worse. It just doesn't make sense for Kelly to stay.

This is still a very young team next year and it would be considered a failure for Kelly to go 8-4. The same record at a Kelly coached Texas would be considered a step towards turning things around and a great improvement.

Can you even fathom the repercussions of bringing in Charlie Strong as ND's Head coach and having him be a failure? After what he just did at Texas?

1.) Kelly IS NOT going anywhere. He has stated it, Jack has stated it.
2.) Strong got fired (or will be fired) from Texas for a reason -- and you think he will do better at ND?
3.) Kelly needs to step away from his "comfort zone" and get a big time hire as a DC -- someone who will come in and light up some asses.
4.) Kelly and Harry H need to look at themselves in the mirror and ask why cannot this offensive line get any push? Then, Kelly needs to look at himself in the mirror and ask "Why am I spreading people out on the 1 - 2 yard line"? This "this is who we are" relative to operating from the shotgun does not fly.

I'm not so much a Kelly supporter, I am a program supporter, like every other fan here. If we had a real candidate that we knew we could hire, I would be all for it. Kelly has done ok in his first 7 seasons at this point the program shouldn't be where it is I agree. I honestly think he's done the best of the last 3 prior head coaches. I'll give him 1 more season to prove it. We are 4-7 so one would say we are a bad team and should get worse next year. Put our record aside and think about the games themselves, we are not a bad team, we've been in every game this year. We just need a few tweaks here and there and keep our impact players in school for crying out loud. (this is where we've been hurt the most imo) I expect no less than 9 wins next year.

I personally do not think Kelly will be fired. But it's not because Swarbrick is going to feel the need to back up a statement made in October. Situations change, decisions change.

There's more of a chance of us being better next year than this bad again.

When the end comes of this nightmare, Kelly will probably initiate it and everyone will mutually agree the time is to move on. Just hope the time is sooner rather than later. Later may be very damaging to the program.

Lou had been recently fired by the Jets, right? Imaging the repercussions if he had failed...

Coach Strong brings a good defensive philosophy to the team and he can recruit the ND package well. He's proven it. His guys graduate and stay out of trouble. He also will come cheap because he is suddenly available and bruised.

They have the offensive coaching staff in place in addition to the current staff on defense. Kelly often says he doesn't do the play calling so no loss there.

Seems like a good match to me and they would not likely suffer in performance next year.

What does Kelly bring to the table that Strong does not?

No, it looks like he is all done.

Lou had just done very well at Minnesota, certainly by Minnesota standards. We didn't hire him from the Jets.

Kelly has had 7 seasons to build this team. Why is there no depth? That is on Kelly. 4-8 with no bowl game is unacceptable and is more than enough reason to fire Kelly. There is no reason to believe Kelly will miraculously turn it around next year. In the history of college football there is not one coach who after 7 seasons on the job has turned around a 4-8 team that he f'd up himself.

Kelly has made it very clear that he already knows everything which is also more than anybody else ... do not question the football genius

Basically we are screwed

1) Disagree. They said BVG job was safe 4 weeks ago.
2) Yes
3) Why big time? When was the last big time coach ND hired? ND is a good coaches opportunity to become known as great.
4) Not being able to contol the clock or put together a drive at this point is not acceptable. Lining up 6 yards back to pick up 8 inches on 4th down is stupid.

I think he's gone. If he gets spanked in LA he will not survive the weekend.

The sanctions are a message from God that Kelly and Jack need to be fired now. The final score of the OUJ game should be the nails in the coffin.

Kelso - Another thing I think that gets overlooked (in hindsight) is how reliant the offense was on the Will Fuller deep ball in 2015. Kizer missed him badly this year.

the deep strike was suddenly gone and the DC's have had the Kelly offense defended for years.

BVG... his big mistake... he was forced to concentrate on d... and the o suffered... BVG could be his ultimate undoing.

I think Kelly made 2 mistakes that stand out to me and both are based on his loyalty.

First was his loyalty to EG who he recruited and brought in his first year. He stuck with EG all the way through. I speculate that Gunner Kiel complained to Kelly about the cheating QB in the summer but Kelly didn't listen. Kiel left and Kelly was stuck with EG. Then came the cheating scandal, the wasted year, and then EG abandoned Kelly for his 5th year.

Second was his loyalty to BVG. Kelly stuck with him way too long and it is clear with BVG gone the defense improved.

I think friendship should be used instead of loyalty where BVG is concerned; and rather than the loyal principled man you see, I see a HC who put the interests of his friendship above the interest of the university. This has cost the program dearly, and on that alone, Kelly should be held to account and fired.

Kelly is staying, whether we like it or not. At this point, if you support ND and the kids, then you have to hope that BK succeeds.

I wanted Jack to make a move, but he didn't. It is what it is. Jack is paid a lot of money to make these decisions, let's hope he knows more than we do.

My support for ND has never wavered. I stand behind ND, Jack, and BK.

Well, disagree; BK is a most comtempable character and as such deserves no support.

To say he gets to latch onto the ND kids as his ticket to absolution is just B.S.

If getting rid of his sort requires a 'correction' then so beit.

I wrestled with this notion, but then realized that God often corrected Israel in most harsh terms to bring about obedience and restore faith. So if ND has to be 'corrected' for a time then so beit.
But to accept this contemptable character is not the way to the right choice. You just want to go further down the corrupt path.
