Play an NIT style tournament with the other bowls like Citrus and Gator.

It’s a cool idea but I don’t like making players play these extra games. There will still be opt outs.

Maybe they should consider moving back the portal window? I’m not sure how to do that with the spring semester.

Love the idea! However, I doubt players will care enough to participate. If guys didn't even care to participate in a NY6 bowl for 1 game, why would they want to play multiple games in a lower tier playoff? Some guys will be raring to go, which is great. But bottom line, what I hate about these bowl games now is that you're seeing a completely different team, as a bunch of backups and inexperienced guys are now the starters.

I always thought NY6 games were meaningless too even with a 4 team playoff. For the teams on the cusp the letdown is huge.

No disagreement, but why did that change? Remember the BCS days? Even if you didn't make the championship game, getting a BCS game was a huge deal and guys were eager to play. Okay, you didn't make the title game, but how can you not get excited to play in Orange, Sugar, Rose, or Cotton Bowl in a historic site and have an opportunity to beat a top 10 team on national television, sellout crowd, and nfl scouts from every organization? Athletes are too good to play in that game now? I'd happily trade shoes with them in a heartbeat.

I understand if you're 6-6, thought you'd have 10 wins and now you're playing the windex
Cleaners bowl in middle of nowhere New Mexico against some crappy G5 school.

Never thought I'd say it, but if guys don't care about the bowl game then just make it a 8 or 16 team playoff.

I'm sure teams from the non power 4 conferences are happy to go to bowl games. Their expectations are just different. Depending on the location a bowl game can be a very enjoyable experience. The outcome of the game itself carries very little weight. No team is carrying momentum from the pop tarts bowl into next season. For sure coaches love the extra practice time for young players with eligibility. That's the only real plus to participating in a non playoff bowl game.

So what if they opt out. Its gives the young guys an opportunity to play. The games are meaningless anyways but this tourney type system makes it interesting, although I doubt it would ever happen. Now the players may have their own opinion...

Interesting to you maybe. If there are opt outs, that means less players for an additional three games.

Plus the players probably just don’t want to be in a tournament like that.

I'm not saying it's bad. It's a cool thing. But I don't think it solved a problem because players wouldn't care for that either
Exactly, but the fans would, LMFAO! I don't know about you but saturday can't come soon enough. Jackson St vs SC State and S. AL vs Western MI

Agree. I was thinking from a fans point of view not the players.

I'm not against idea of younger guys getting playing time. But unfortunately some teams are hit so hard by the transfer portal they go into bowl games with no backups at some positions. I think Oklahoma once had to replace the entire o-line for the bowl game. And I think Clemson was concerned they may not even have enough DBs to play in a bowl game. So you do have to take numbers and safety into consideration here.

Really kind of a good idea. At least it gives these teams and players something to play for. Would it work ? Not sure. But they are changing everything else , I say give it a try. There’s nothing to lose.

Keep the bowl games. Love watching all the games starting in mid December. I enjoy watching all of the bowl games leading up to the championship games!

You played at the highest level in college, so “playing” and “competing” are in your DNA.

As a player, why wouldn’t you want to play in a bowl game ?
Especially if you were a senior and it was going to be your last college game.

I think it’s a great idea, but it involves playing three more games for the eventual finalists and I think that’s a major impediment.

These guys are pros now. Sit out an NFL game when healthy and see how that goes.
Bullshit. If someone like a Joe Alt or Blake Fisher doesn’t want to risk injury in a bowl game that could jeopardize a career, then don’t play.

On the surface, it seems like a pretty cool idea, but I don't think it addresses the root problem. Part of why bowl season has been diminished is because there has been a sea change with players not wanting to participate and risk injury. A sham playoff likely won't raise the stakes enough to offset the risk in their minds, especially when the risk is actually greatly increased in some cases, as some teams would be asked to play upwards of three games even. So ironically, it actually compounds the problem rather than solves it.

Just wondering ... are most players today playing for schools they really wanted to play for? Or are they playing at schools where they think they have the best choice to get into the NFL? Maybe it always was like this, but it seems to me that now days players don't have as much of that old school spirit that I grew up with.

I was in 4 of them. The Rose Bowl was awesome and a week in Hawaii for the Aloha Bowl was delightful. Gator Bowl was disappointing as our expectations for that season was much higher. El Paso for the Sun Bowl was not exciting at all. My last year we stunk and didn't make a Bowl game. When your season is disappointing the thought of a few more weeks of practice is not very attractive especially around the holidays.

Great idea but I would guess there would have to be some incentive to it for both players and the universities. Why would they want to risk injuries playing an additional 3-4 games. Benefits would be "free practices" they otherwise wouldn't be allowed to have, plus it could be a good way for universities to make some TV money. I would just imagine most players opting out to protect themselves, especially Seniors and NFL prospects.

I don’t know. Maybe because I like traditional a lot. I would not mind going back to the bowl games and conference tie ins. I know that is done and over. But the problem is this. If you look at professional sports , football, basketball, baseball and hockey . There’s a limited number of teams 30-32 teams roughy in each sport. Look at the breakdown of conferences and divisions. It’s impossible to replicate what pro sports do with a field of 130 teams. Lane Kiffin may be on to something. Talent wise , for the most part , the SEC and BIG 10 have top end talent throughout. There is a drop off in the other conferences. In the NFL even the worst team has top talent. It’s only one example but look at FSU last year. Undefeated. I even thought they deserved a playoff spot. Then they play Georgia. They were pasted 63-3. Think of it this way in high school there are different levels of competition in each state , 1A to 6A. The first being the lowest level. The won’t play a 6A team because the disparity in talent is too great. That same rule should apply to college football. Put the teams in levels where they compete against equally talented or close to equal talent. That way no team can pad stats or have automatic wins. A 40 team league with blue blood schools mighty work. Thoughts ?

Irishherb, when you consider how so very few players get into the NFL, you have to think that they’re playing for their school

I understand

But if you have a disappointing season chances are you’re not getting invited to a bowl
