Regular season games and the playoffs rock !! But who really cares about the exhibitions a month after the regular season especially for the teams that were in the playoff hunt in November.

It is the playoffs or nothing for me. Others may feel differently..

I always have been against the BCS and the playoffs. Takes away from all the other bowl games. But it's all about money, so there you have it. And please those that say "decide it on the field", Really, that is as naive as it gets. Until and unless all college programs play by the same rules, it is NEVER decided on the field.

agree, and so they should revamp bowl line up so the playoffs are climax. Play the semis on NYD night,,,and all the other bowl games prior. Fewer bowls have to be the future,,, I know TV brings revenues but WHO was watching some of those dog match ups.... ?

The ratings for the bowls were down this year but ESPN keeps adding more and more. There were 30 just a few years back and now there are 40. Bowls will only be discontinued when they fail to make money for ESPN. Don't expect huge changes at any one time. Any trimming of games will likely be limited to a handful per year.

For fans its no fun. Sure, they are meaningless games, but its still football. I enjoy watching any college game that's on, so I enjoy them. It also seems to be a reward for players and coaches to get to travel and play for another month. I mean, imagine being a 20 year old getting a trip to the Bahamas getting free Popeyes chicken?

No question, I agree they need to have the semi's the night of New Years Day. All the New years 6 games were even more meaningless after watching teams still in contention the night before. The Fiesta Bowl atmosphere from the parking lot to inside the stadium was much better a decade ago than this year.

I agree about the money. To me, the worst part regards who is really benefiting from the money. The local communities and TV take the majority of profit and rarely have any vested interest in the schools involved. Many schools do not make money from the bowl payout once expenses are covered. Only a few bowls pay out sufficient levels to schools. Hard to quantify the value of the prestige or ego boost that comes with an appearance/win in a high profile bowl. And then there is the problem of players like Jaylon Smith who made no money from the bowl game, but likely lost money because of the injury.

I certainly wonder if the time has come to abolish the bowls.

Expand playoff to Top 16 teams. There's 15 games for us then (8+4+2+1). Top 16 sponsors pay bowls for game sponsorships and TV commercials, and top 16 bowls bid for the available games.

If Apple or Google or Coke decide to spend $2 Billion each, we might just have every game sponsored by a megabrand. Who cares? That's plenty of money.

Bodi, I agree. Used to really look forward to the major bowl matchups, and the likelihood that a few had possible NC implications. Add the tradition of having the top Big playing the top Pac, for example, and it made for a great New Years Day. But, that's history and no longer possible. Still think the best way forward is to have the Major Bowls host an eight team playoff. Personally would prefer the semi finals to be on New Years Day.

Or get rid of the playoffs and their money grab culture;)

Tex -- I m a big 8 team guy as well but I would like to see all four games on New years hosted as you said by the four major bowls - pure theater

12:00 Cotton -
3:30 Rose Bowl
6:30 Sugar Bowl
9:00 Orange Bowl

Too good to be true - I'm a damn visionary that no one is listening to .

Kelly, would buy into the New Years Day bowls as you suggest, except I don't think I have the stamina to watch four games in a single day any longer. Give me the Cotton and Sugar on New Years Eve and the Rose and Orange on New Years Day and I would be one happy football fan. Tesla was a visionary also!

Tex -- You have to man up and sux it up for 12 hrs I'm confident you could pull it off given that at least one of the games you would only have a fleeting interest in

Play games, not the semis, at 3:00p and 6:30p on New Year's Eve. Everyone is home by 3:00p anyway, and the second game gets over before the hard core partying begins. Then play the semis at 2:00p and 5:30p on New Years day. Or 2:00p and 8:30p so the Rose Bowl won't bitch and snivel about being booted out of their coveted 5:00p EST TV slot.

Sorry i liked the old old system where some years even after the bowls there was controversy. Whoud like to see the bowl tie ends end. And set up a pecking order that revoles. Let the bowls pick their own match ups regardless of rankings It would create some awesome match ups. Screw the play offs.

T walsh- tex - your suggestions make too much sense -- for that reason probably won't happen

I liked the old system, too. But now that they have the playoffs

I liked the old system, too, but now with the playoffs the other bowls outside the playoff bowls don't matter.
I still like the regular season and the hunt for the playoffs and the p[layoff games if ND is in them.

I think that 40 bowl games (in which even teams with LOSING RECORDS play in) is a total farce. All bowls (except those that host the play-offs) are meaningless exhibitions, and should be eliminated. When, like at present, you have a 4-team playoff, these 3 games should require 3 bowls only. If they should eventually expand to an 8-team play-off, then they should be played in 7 bowls! No other bowls are needed, because they prove nothing!

Twalsh......

Actually I prefer playing golf and tennis during the week as Tee times and court times are much easier to schedule. And occasionly I do meet up with some of my working buddies for an early morning game on the weekends.

I do quite enjoy the first game of the CFB season when 2 of the better teams are playing each other. On the other hand, I tend to ignore the games that are more or less "guaranteed wins". As the season progresses the games usually do get a lot more interesting.

How 'bout you T...... , is that similar to how it works for you?

Re: "I miss the old days"

OK, I hear ya.................but, these are the NEW DAYS! You need to get yourself ACClimated! You need to socialize with some young people and get a feel for what the future holds instead of the past.

Seriously, go hang out with some younger fans or students prior to a game and ask them what they think about ALL the changes that have been going on (and there are many) and try to get a new perspective on things. Do that and you will start having a lot more fun............guarantee it!

Ara, I enjoy your short walks down memory lane that you share. They tend to rekindle my memories of same. Like you and others here, miss the tradition of the major bowls and what they represented, and feel the only way to recapture this is with a larger playoff structure using these bowls to arrive at the NC. Don't want to turn the clock back, just make these bowls more meaningful and exciting while improving the NC playoff structure. Who wouldn't want to have seen Ohio State and Stanford and a healthy ND in such a scheme this season?

First, I usually attend 2 or 3 ND home games per season, and usually one away or Shamrock game. Absent that, unless we have the rare noon start, I usually get 20 to 30 miles on the bike before settling in around 2:00p for the ends of the noon games and the ND game at 3:30p. When the ND game ends the wife and I head to dinner at a sports bar. Sit at the bar with all the 7:00p and 7:30p games playing in front of us, stay there until halftime, head home to watch the ends of whichever are the better games. Mark me down for hating ND night games. I enjoy dinner and all the night games much more if we have already played.

90% of the bowl games have always been "meaningless". The CFP hasn't changed that at all. I think the problem this year is that all the games, including CFP have been horrible games. Last year nearly all of them were amazing. This year I think everyone lost interest after seeing so many non-competitive games.
