For those (i.e Paul Finebaum) who say "we're only talking about $300) they are missing the point! That is just one text thread we are seeing. How many more times did he ask for $300? I know this is not a new phenomenon but when a school like Ole Miss goes from doing jack s**t to pulling 5* this behavior needs to be investigated.

the back story is why did certain schools that were not recruiting at highest levels, suddenly become huge players on the recruiting trail. The an$wer is clear. Even if there was a fair allowance limit, there would be those violating it to gain advantage.

Most of us had to scuffle at one time or another. Whether it was in school or living paycheck to paycheck trying to raise a young family. Non athlete students struggle. Sympathy can most certainly go towards these athletes who are struggling providing they don't have a sleeve full of tats that cost a bunch or jewelry and piercings that cost a bunch or game units in their rooms that cost a bunch. It's all about appearances. As it stands, giving players money is against the rules. May it be ten dollars or 500. If the rule is a problem and there is support for a change, then change it. Unless there is real evidence, it is pointless to say that everyone does it. This Ole Miss allegation is a big deal.

Only a few football programs are turning a profit. Many are not. Many use monies intended for academics to help defray the cost of running a football program. How are those programs expected to pay players? I guess they can stop the practice of housing their players and staff in hotels the night before home games or cut the salaries of the coaching staff or even stop the practice of buying special game uniforms for one game a year. Those are all cost cutting measures that would certainly cut costs so players can get paid but also kill recruiting in this modern era for the struggling programs. Paying players would make the strong stronger and the weak weaker. And we haven't even discussed the non revenue sports and the ladies programs who should get equally paid. Lots of talk. No action.

I certainly did while in graduate school; sometimes my penny collection was my food budget for the last week of the month. But I never did any impermissible act to raise funds. If a player is willing to compromise his integrity once, then when may be the next time?
Let's make even bigger changes and reduce the income coming in to schools from football. Make broadcast rights and tickets free and provide no scholarships. No rights or tickets so the argument about how much the schools make is meaningless. No scholarships so it will be easier to determine who is getting illicit payments. Corruption will be reduced all around.
Did you know many young baseball players have a choice of playing college baseball for no money or going into the minor leagues and getting paid their fair market value? Why do you think so many of them choose college baseball over getting paid their fair market value?
If the NFL wants to create minor leagues for football prospects who are 18 years or older I'm all for it. Let's see which avenue most 18 year old football prospects choose: The college route where they don't get paid to play or the minor league route where they get paid their fair market value? While we're at it, let's also see which system generates the most fan interest and TV deals. And to make things even more interesting, let's check back when playing careers are over to see which group thrives better post football. I think the results would be very interesting and would help us to understand if college athletes are truly being taken advantage of.

It seems to me that college athletes are being paid---it's called a free college education. If some fail to appreciate that (e.g. Cardale Jones), then that tells you a lot about their values.
Don't we already have a minor league for the NFL? It's called Alabama, Ohio State, southern cal, Florida State, LSU, and other teams of their ilk----teams simply trying to keep players barely eligible so they can play for a few years and then enter the draft.
Ohio State LB Darron Lee conceded as much: "It's (i.e. Ohio State) a miniature professional team at the college level." And some people still wonder why Urban Meyer will never be the HC at ND.

Right, and that's partly my point. "Fair market value" for a lot of football prospects would likely be a lot less than many of them think. Only 1.6% of college football players are actually good enough to play in the NFL, and of that very small percentage, many of them will be out of the league in 3 years or less.
As a neutral bystander of this "pay for play" issue, the players do get very expensive education which I assume includes meals and boarding. But, they put in the time to earn that "ride" and it's quite possible that these players earn the program more than was invested in them. The regular elite student who has earned an academic scholarship can't possibly put in the extra 24/7 that the athlete has, or am I mistaken?
They should have to pay a fair share of tax on it - students who have jobs have to pay tax.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I am neutral on whether players get paid or not. Scholarship players have to put in many extra hours into their sport outside of the classroom. It's not like they just show up on Fall Saturday afternoons, so, it is of my opinion, that the athletes earn those renewable rides and it is hardly a freebie. Not to mention the monies these guys bring in to the more successful programs. Sometimes I get the feeling that fans believe these rides are Xmas gifts and easy to earn. I'm not quite sure the student who has earned an academic scholarship puts in the 24/7 that a scholarship athlete has to put in yet it's the athlete who has to constantly prove themselves, on the field, off the field, and in the classroom.
^ for many, college football will be the best job they ever have; for some it might be the only job they ever have!
I have a sense that academic scholars are probably as competitive in their chosen fields as are collegiate athletic grant in aid recipients. Never having been on academic scholarship I'm not sure of this. Are you?
I used to like Finebaum but he has abandoned objectivity to become the SEC's primary lobbyist. I am sure he is well compensated but it is a shame. Someone like Herbstreit should be on every day to offer an unbiased opinion.
Agree. A minor league player is worth at MOST $5000 per season. That player wants to capitalize on wearing the Notre Dame, USC, Alabama, etc jersey. The jersey is what earns the millions that mostly go to other sports. Not the no name high school star.
