We lose this game unless we are in the GT backfield before they can option the ball

If you see them making it to the Los, we cannot win

Basic. Execute this please

Uncle Rico called the perfect blitz when he put Day back in coverage and K Russell nailed the QB from the back to cause a fumble.
Game over if the Irish offense take advantage.

The Irish offense must accept Uncle Ricos gifts.

We will lose this game if each player does not exercise his assignment. You must stop the fullback up the middle. It's the heart of the wishbone attack and it must be locked down. Punish the QB and test his heart and wrap up the pitch. It would help our prospects if we got up on them by a couple of TD's early.

Exactly, Ara. Play your assignments. And I think we have the right personnel to so it. Cage and Rochelle and Day will clog up the middle. Okwara and Trumbetti will hammer the qb. Jaylon Smith and Drue Tranquill will get the pitchman.
This is not the Tulane or Alcorn State defense. And we have one of the best Olines and one of the best running backs and the best wideout in the Nation on offense.

This team will come together. Underdog at home.. They will play their best.

well I think if tech can't cover # 7 then they are the ones that could be in trouble this game. don't know who from tech will covering fuller but he'll have to play his best game of the year if kizer throws the ball his direction a lot

From what I understand, GT can throw if they have to. Justin Thomas supposedly has a very good arm. And, be prepared for the mandatory cut block debate.

We say the same thing every year before going into a game against Navy, Air Force, or in this case GT. We know what we have to do and what we need to stop, but what in the history has told us we will execute. I expect this to be a shootout, hopefully ND can keep up.

No, they can throw effectively when they DON'T have to. If you can force them into passing situations you can force mistakes. They are effective passing when it catches you by surprise after they lull you to sleep running the ball every play.

One thing I will give Kelly. he is good at disguising his offensive looks with a new QB.

That held true for Tommy, Golson, Zaire, and now we will see what he does in the first start for Kizer.

What I expect defensively?

I expect to see the LB do the brunt of the work and hold contain pushing everything to the middle. What I hope to see is Shumate and Redfield actually in position in the middle of the field to stop what comes through the A and B gap. What I fear is that, this will leave Cole, and Russell in man coverage the bulk of the day, and The GTech QB (Thomas) has shown his ability to throw the ball.

The people we really need to see 'flash' in this game
Trumbetti
Day
Tillery (would be a great 'coming out' game for him)

If those three can control the line, and stay healthy through the game. I see ND by a TD or so.

GTech is going to get a boat load of yards. That happens, just as long as they keep it between the 20's and out of the redzone I don't care.

That doesn't change the fact that there were multiple plays where from the minute he dropped his head was on Fuller and he forced throws to Fuller.

Fuller is a huge safety valve for a QB. He is just good at getting open and catching the ball. Kizer was under pressure none of us understand and in a pretty lonely place. Could you imagine what all the headlines would have been today if he had over thrown that ball? Everyone would be predicting ND 6 and 6 the rest of the way.

No one is discounting the pressure he was under or the fact that his throw at the end of the game which won the game was a big time play.

That being said moving forward he will have to do a better job when it comes to looking off, progression reads, and patience when he is going up against better teams with stronger defenses, especially in the back end.

If Kizer protects the ball we are in good shape . If his mistakes are fumbles or picks ND will struggle . He will make throws which is already obvious, he just can't get picked off .

You must be amazing at what you do. We've only seen the kid play for 30 minutes in a game in which he won with a big time play. Yet you are able to analyze and predict his play.

Kid did a bang up job. Try to enjoy the win.

Go Irish!

Agree with this

John- Don't think that what I am saying is super critical or requires that much in-depth analysis. Most young QB's without experience have those issues. Speaks more to my opinion that UVA's defense is going to be in the bottom half to bottom third of defenses ND will face this year.

Yes. Exactly. That's the point. Their passing game can be a weapon when not expecting it.

Don't worry....GT can't play with you all. Like all the pundits say.... "It's simply assignment football.." Surely ND can handle that. UGa, FSU, and MSU did a fine defensive job last year....watch the tape. If you play like you did against that juggernaut UVa then it's going to be a long day of watching GT grind it out.

MSU got killed by Ga. Tech. It is assignment football. That is what confuses me. There is a reason teams went away from the triple option. Defenses caught up to that style. I get that ND doesn't play against it much, but on paper, our defensive players are better than their offensive players (recruiting ratings). Navy however seems to always give ND fits. Interesting to say the least.

Cut Blocks is a factor. You can't practice against it. Hopefully the staff can prepare and teach our lads on how to defend themselves against it. We absolutely cannot sustain any more injuries. It wouldn't break my heart if the rules committee would call for the end of this technique. I watched just a couple of GT highlight plays on "College Football Daily" and some guy was getting cut on every play.
