The bus could be filling up (16 commits, 7-9 spots left)

there are players that are definite takes if they want in: Davis and Robertson are such prospects; regardless of who else is in. In fact every guy I listed is a take.
(jones is a notch below Kelly and McC and Davis)

wiltfong is repeating today that McCulloch's family is still telling him that he better have a really good reason for not choosing notre dame. Michigan was a big player for his services but from what I've read I guess Michigan pissed off the family when dj left the program. can't remember the last time our irish got a big time 4 star LB out of texas as he'll be a great get

Figured I'd bump this back to the top. Since I made this post, 2 of the guys (Kareem and Hayes) did in fact pop for the Irish and Studsill probably will tomorrow. Ikeke was a bit of a surprise going to A&M and McIntosh added a solid piece at RB. So if Studsill does pop for ND tomorrow as many expect that will give us 20 commits with room for 5 more. Now here's where it gets fun if you're a fan of ND recruiting. 5 spots and there's probably 15 kids that we at least have a decent shot with. Coming out of the last recruiting period ND is at least co leaders with:
LB Caleb Kelly (5*) - him and his mom absolutely were blown away by the visit. ND vs Oklahoma. I will say based on comments and seeing his twitter, he "got" ND.
ILB Jonathan Jones (3*) - us and Michigan is what he told 1 writer after his visit w/ BK. At this point I don't know how much we are after him. I think he'll end up at UM b/c they are recruiting him really hard.
CB Damar Hamlin (4*) - backed off of Pitt after poor attendance at games. Likes the "stage" ND provides. ND and Penn St leaders with Pitt hanging around.
CB Troy Pride (3*) - most think its ND or Va Tech. I think he wants to stick w/ VT and is seeing how the coaching change is handled.

Those are the guys that have made public statements openly stating ND at the top or sharing the top spot. These guys now are guys who haven't openly said it, but many feel ND is either in the driver's seat or firmly in the mix to land their verbal:
WR Javon McKinley (4*) - seems like we've been the leader forever, but mom supposedly would like him to stay closer to home. Hard to guage, but he's a take if he wants in, has been shooting up the top 100 recently.
LB Jeffrey McCollough (4*) - probably the #2 player left on our board. possibly declaring at the UA game on Jan 2nd. Cancelled his A&M visit this past weekend and they think that's telling. A lot of positive news recently, including he had an outstanding in home w/ BK, who left telling someone he feels McCollough will be Irish in the end. His mom is totally on board according to Wiltfong and openly is trying to sway him to South Bend.
ATH Jordan Fuller (4*) - friends with Caleb Kelly and his family. should Kelly commit wouldn't be surprised to see Fuller follow. Loved his visit and said ND would "be hard to say no to".
WR Damian Alloway (4*) - Basically its between ND and UCLA, I put him here b/c its trending away from ND, but I think it has to do w/ is he comfortable leaving Cali more than liking UCLA better, b/c he really liked ND early. To the point most penciled him into our class last summer.
LB Jonah Morris (3*) - decommited from MSU & immediately said ND was at the top of his group. wants to play WR though and I don't know if ND has room for him there, or at LB if higher targets fall our way.
LB Brendan Ferns (4*) - highly ranked kid that few are recruiting its weird. He reached out to ND, but it seems he wants us more than we do him. Penn St bound probably.

These guys then we're in the mix but they're longer shots:
LB Ben Davis (5*) - put us in his top 5, but I cant see him passing up Bama, Georgia, Auburn, LSU to come up and play at ND. Great job by Denson to get us in this position with him though.
ATH Demitrius Robertson (5*) - #1 player left on our board. What once looked very good has slowly slipped away. He still says he wants to take another visit to ND w/ his brother. If that happens we might have a shot, otherwise, will probably head to the SEC.
CB David Long (4*) - Stanford commit that has been looking around. If he leaves the west coast its a ND/Mich battle, otherwise look for Washington to get him, don't think he will get into Stanford.
LB Aaron Hansford (4*) - funny after looking at the above posts to see him here. He lists us in his top 10 but it sounds like something happened and we're basically out of it. Might be something academically and if so we could resurge if it got straightened out, but kinda doubt it.

DMaster- thanks for the post. Good stuff.

Need to go back, way back - Tyreo Harrison, Bert Berry (think he was recruited as a LB even though he grew into a DE), Jimmy Friday, and way back Huntley Bakich (of the Lou Holtz sideline face mask). Might have missed someone.

well, Studsill makes it 20! Now it looks like all the guys we were kinda expecting to get (other than possibly McKinley) are on board and now its about out recruiting the competition.

In recent recruiting news, Tom Loy put his crystal ball in for Jonathan Jones, LB out of Florida. Says he is extremely excited about ND after talking on the phone. Still wonder if we take him or not, would suck to have to pass on a kid this good cause we don't have room but it is what it is. I still think McC and Kelly are higher on our board, but if 1 of them goes elsewhere Jones will become a high priority.

Also Loy said a source close to Jordan Fuller, who just visited this past weekend, that ND is def in his top 2 but didn't elaborate who the other team was.

a bunch of redshirting could be a good thing Pennick4 because it says that Kelly and staff have finally built up some quality depth through recruiting

At this point I'm looking for a finish of:
  1. McCulloch (LB) - 4* Top100
  2. McKinley (WR) - 4* Top100
  3. Fuller (S) - 4* Top150
  4. Hamlin (DB) - 4* Top150
  5. Jones (LB) - 4*
If we do end up with that finish, I'd be ecstatic!!

That plus a rankings bump or 2 (Eichenberg, Studstill, etc) would definitely have in finish solidify in the Top10 of the recruiting rankings

It's my belief that ND takes 25 players this year as well - I could see them taking more subtracting out EEs. BK has figured out the recruiting puzzle at ND.

well, 2 weeks and some change until signing day, the homestretch for recruiting junkies. Buckle up and hang on, going to be a lot of excitement or heartache for Irish fans. Since the last update ND has added 2 more good pieces in Troy Pride and Javon McKinley. Pride soared up the rankings on 1 service (forget which 1) into the top 100 in the nation after his performance in the NC vs SC all star game. McKinley is another good get at WR, think he has a shot at playing time this fall. On the negative side, Hamlin eliminated the Irish when some in the know thought we lead. Rumors swirled that the staff decided they only wanted 1 more "corner only" and made the pitch to him and Pride and Pride jumped at the opportunity while Hamlin wanted to wait.

which leaves probably 3 spots remaining. We need to load up on defense, but it looks like offense/athletes will make up the remaining. Here are the names to watch:
1) Demitris Robertson - a lot of momentum behind ND right now. Didn't get into Stanford, and ever since predictions have been coming in for ND from Georgia recruiting insiders. Would be the best get for ND since Jaylon. I cant believe I'm saying it, but I think he's the most likely to commit at this point.

2) Jonah Morris - the WR/LB prospect, that was a 1 time Mich St commit, is visiting next weekend. If we want to accept a commitment, I think he joins the class as well. He said awhile back that he thought he knew where he wants to go, so is the ND trip an indication that he wants to go to ND or wants to compare it to where he wants to go? We will have to wait and see. The question is, do we push for him or wait?

3) Jeffrey McCollough - NSD decision. momentum right now behind Texas. Mom has always wanted him to go to ND, does mama win out on decision day? Right now I think all the local pressure is leading to the Texas momentum. Not ruling out ND when the day comes to decide though.

4) Caleb Kelly - 5*, HS Butkus award winner. another NSD decision. ND vs Oklahoma. Most Fresno area kids go to Oklahoma, but Kelly and his family have really taken to ND and I wouldn't be shocked if he chose the Irish. Steve Wiltfong continues to say on more than 1 occasion that ND has a real chance here. Scout thinks its neck and neck w/ ND maybe having a slight edge. BK still has an in home left while Okl does not. coin flip guess at this point.

5) Ben Davis - 5* LB from Alabama w/ a dad that played at Bama. ND doesn't land these kids, but he loved the visit and says ND is "In the top 3" with Bama and Georgia. Still think it would be a stretch to say we have anything over a 10% chance on NSD of landing him when he will make his decision.

6) Jonathan Jones - the LB many thought was a silent, now may be trending back to Michigan after they hired the BC defensive coordinator. Rumors circulated that we lost a silent this week, I think he is the 1. I think he ends up at UM unfortunately.

7) Damian Alloway - new offers going out to other WRs seem to back up the rumors he is a silent or going to commit to UCLA. UCLA insiders say they aren't pushing for him but "will take him". Funny cause BK REALLY wanted this kid.

8) Jordan Fuller - no timetable for commitment, no idea where he's going. If I had to guess, OSU, but ND is in his "top group".

9) Nate Johnson - 3* WR, Michigan commit. Says he's "100% committed to UM" but will be visiting ND. I wouldn't be shocked if he flipped even if he says he's 100%. No one who's truly 100% visits in the last 2 weeks. Think he is the "plan b" option now w/ Alloway out.

So you say, who do we get?:
Going out on a limb - Robertson, Kelly and Morris. And I will be elated. We shall see.

ND seems to carry some dead weight on their roster.Arguably these players are filling spots: Turner, Hounshell, Sebastion, Harrell, Hayes, and Grace There's no doubt more but these are the Sr/GS/DH players that have to go.

These players are not dead weight. They were offered scholarships and accepted them. Notre Dame honors the 4-year scholarship, unlike many other schools, and should not just force players out. It is one of the practices done by Notre Dame that I very much support. The renewable 1-year scholarships that other schools utilize is an unethical practice in my opinion regardless of its being allowed by the NCAA.

I also dislike the concept of 1 year scholarships and I feel all scholarships should be 4 years and all email all shoud have to be declared by a centralized, independent source

I also disagree with the concept that none of those players are "just filling spots" on the 2015 roster. IMO some of those players are doing exactly that, but that's the risk you take when you're recruiting and trying to project development....you win some and lose some

I also disagree that all of those layers fall into that category.

IMO:
Not on 2016 Roster: Hounshell, Grace
2016 Contributors: Hayes, Sebastian
2016 Fillers: Turner, Harrell

Why are people so down on Hayes?
Because of al the practice they have all watched.

Seriously though it is because he sent out some tweets he should not have and the fact he did not play this year. I think if he responds how ND would like him too he will be thankful for the red shirt year and come back strong moving forward.

Pat yourself on the back...you rise above my thoughts and can sit back and tell yourself how good you are. Maybe you can come up with an original idea sometime rather than just finding fault in others' posts...just a thought - try it sometime.

I did not write any thoughts attacking you or your thoughts. I certainly did not try put you down or try to act in a superior fashion; I simply disagreed with you and offered my view. Hence, why it is called a discussion forum. But now, you try to insult me.

I did criticize other schools who utilize the renewable 1-year scholarship approach, but that was hardly directed as criticism of you.

Why react so negatively toward me for simply disagreeing with you? Do you do this with all disagreements?

You poor thing...I am soooo sorry for attacking you. You see, I mistook you for one of those holier than thou people that quote someone's thread and tell them how wrong it is and states how it can be right even when no one else is doing it that way. Oh, wait, that's exactly what you did...my mistake.

You have to be kidding me, correct? Otherwise, you are being ridiculous. I offered my opinion that disagreed with yours and offered another opinion renewable scholarships used to weed out players was unethical. These were opinions, not statements of correctness so you attributing some value-judgment to my opinions is simply ridiculous. Again, I can only wonder about your lack of confidence if you react this strongly and defensively when another person simply disagrees with you.

I saw nothing argumentative about your response either. You simply stated an opinion that Notre Dame sticks to it's commitment that they make to the student-athletes. If they yanked a schlorship from an underperforming student-athlete how would that student-athlete be able to continue at ND unless he came from a family of some wealth.

I see your ego is in defense of your opinion. I will change my opinion to yours - happy?

Fine, you are not sincerely interested in discussing topics but only having others agree with you. There was no ego in my comments, but believe what you want; you will anyways.

Tom Loy thinks we get Robertson, Kelly and Jones. There is a guy on scout w/ "sources close to Kelly" saying "Kelly is all irish". Another reporter is hearing Robertson will wait past NSD and wait on his test scores. Jones, who knows, both ND and UM writers feel good.

Robertson clearly wants Stanford. If we were unselfish we should feel good about a kid chasing a dream; so why don't we?

Because we're fans of a specific football team???
(Just a guess)

He may continue to try to get into Stanford, but at this point Stanford has a pretty consistent track record of disallowing players who haven't been admitted by this point
Also, he's supposedly vising Alabama this weekend, in addition to taking the SAT on Saturday...........so it seem like something has to give here

Have to feel decent about where ND sits 2 weeks before NSD

I would rather he go to Bama honestly. He was committed there at 1 point, he's seen all he needs to. If his test scores were to improve and he was able to get admitted, I think he becomes a tree. And I don't know the track record Stanford has, but something about this SAT test he's taking has me nervous.

Robertson is not going to Stanford. They haven't recruited him since last summer.
