As the NFL has grown in popularity and the money has been more lucrative it has become progressively harder for "Academics First" schools to complete. As the NFL continues on its self disruptive course the money will downgrade. The less money is in the NFL the better for ND. Schools that offer no education will become less desirable and maybe, just maybe, college football will actually become COLLEGE FOOTBALL AGAIN.

I have found the NFL boring for years, but when I do watch sports, I want 0 politics to be interjected. Sports are for escapism. Politics drag me straight back to reality.

So in 50 years, ND should dominate again? The NFL could lose 25% of its revenues and still offer many young men a brighter future than they could get anywhere else.

With all due respect, while i agree that the NFL has gotten boring, your "theory" has absolutely no chance of become reality

I'm pretty sure that none of this is going to have any impact on Notre Dame at all.

Love the wishful thinking. I might actually whack a digit to make the true.

However the only way wgat you speak of wouod be true is there be a collapse of the system in place. Economy, then the extras get hit. Entertainment, vacations, going out to eat..etc

Look

I don't mean the claimed credit crunch of Obama and all that shit. That stuff is nothing. When people say recession now it's a tiny inconvenience and nothing more.

But in order for what you hope to happen especially in the NFL the system would literally have to collapse. As in food becomes difficult to get. Forget driving. Retail stores close ..resturaunts go out...etc
Not one or two but mass amounts.

A real big depression in other words.

Given it would take such a financial catastrophe I don't wish for the times you speak...but I sure would love athletics at all levels getting a reset button hit.

I executed my right to protest by turning off the NFL and found a replay of ND vs MSU. I'm through with pro sports except NASCAR. NASCAR knows how to handle their business.

Years ago I spoke to a bunch of school kids on career day with Gary Fencik. He was a pretty cool dude because he let me go first so I didn't have to follow him. For the toddlers in the group, he had a 12 year NFL career, was 2x NFL Pro Bowler, the '85 Bears Defensive Captain, and still leads the Bears in all time tackles and interceptions. Even dated a Playboy Playmate for a while.

But he didn't talk to those kids about the Superbowl or football, he talked about getting his MBA from Northwestern while he was playing for Bears. He said he loved playing football, but he made more money in finance than he ever did playing football, and went on to give a very well prepared presentation on a career in finance.

Nice story. Unfortunately times are different. Much different.

While one could stress the importance of that degree...the money to be made in football today is just over the top insane...times ten.

No doubt that players are better paid than when Fencik played and Fencik had an exceptional education (Yale undergrad).

But the average NFL career has fallen to 3.5 years, with a median annual salary of $860,000. (Link discussing median as the best measure of NFL earnings) For 3.5 years, that's $3,000,000 in median career earnings.

If you measure by average career earnings, NFL players earn substantially less than nearly all other athletes. Its 1/2 of what NHL players earn in their career, 1/3 of what MLB players earn, and 1/4 of what NBA players earn.

A player going on to a 20-30 year second career in the financial world, with much of that time spent as a partner in a global private equities firm, is going to make more than the $3,000,000 he earned in the NFL.

Even with a "legit degree", the average ND graduate football player is not getting anywhere near the same job offers as regular ND graduates. Companies do not view all graduates as the same.

The difference in a few million when you are talking about Billions isn't going to make that much of a difference. Also the amount of money the schools are making is just going to keep rising... that affects ND too.

You can connect the dots however you see fit to curtail the result to support your notion..
But it's the fact that we're talking money so high in many cases it almost seems fake or fairy tale like.
While what you say is ultimately true the money in the big situations is so over the top that it distorts perception.

See when fencik played Eveb the highest of high salaries were a nice living the difference is that the high contracts today isn't just a nice living but almost god like. Money to literally burn.

Thirty years ago, and beyond, players top salaries were a nice living....

Trying to tell a division one QB the importance of a degree wheb he sees Roethlisberger, Brady, Stafford, etc. Making an insane salary...good luck.
For real. It's not like those guys are making five million dollars over ten years..which is 500k. A nice living...right? But he sees them making 125 million over ten years or more for even less years. A reciever getting 100 million over eight years. A hundred million. Ridiculous!

Baseball is even worse. Much worse.

A 200 mill contact. To pitch? Lol.

Is this a parody post or something? This can’t be serious.
