Watching Stanford pound UCLA (28-10 sec. qt.). Man, they look good. Pound the ball; strategic passes; multiple formations; variations on variations. Whoops; 35-10. Offensive line relentless. But, the real thing is, they play so clean. They do all of the little things right. Well coached. That is all I will say.

Well coached?

I have read from the football brain trust on this board he is a "nothing" coach, and his offense will NOT bring in top recruits (though the Stanford roster proves otherwise).

This is a very good team with a very good coach

They look great tonight in all phases of the game. More variety on offense than anytime I can remember, but still typical dominant OL play, and running the ball exceptionally well. Usual hard fundamental tackling, and the DB play has been exceptional. All that said, UCLA's defense looks terrible after some key injuries, and so hard to know if Stanford is as good as they appear.

McCaffery is amazing and he's only a sophomore. Add Barry Sanders Jr with the o-linemen Stanford commands and you have the making of the ultimate next man in on a dinosaur offense.

DIP, yes...and arm tackling will not bring him down.

Can't remember a more dominating performance by an OL. UCLA was utterly helpless. The entire DL was getting pushed 7 yards down the field on almost every play. McCaffery had wall many yards down the field on every snap. Remind me bama in 2012. And I guess the announcers were saying that everyone of them will be playing on Sunday b

We better be healthy and hungry to win that game.

They could be #1 if they hadn't lost to Northwestern in the season opener. At the very least they would be #2.

I said "could" because even though they are outplaying OSU some voters don't like to move teams down if they don't lose.

UCLA is not what they were at the start of the season; unfortunately neither is Stanford.

Vs Stanford, my approach would be saturate the field with speed. Try to take away that methodical approach and get them out of their comfort zone. What Stanford does, they do better than anyone else; do not try to beat them at their own game.

Hard to believe that's the same Northwestern that Michigan crushed.

I believe ND is going to have to get an early lead on Stanford to win that game. Letting them dictate tempo and style of play for themselves is not a good recipe to win. You can't trade punches with that team.

Though the styles are different, they remind me of Navy with their consistency and discipline to the system. ND has to make them play catch up in my opinion to win.

Stanford is real good but we have immediate issues Saturday. We better bring pressure and not turn the ball over. Need to impress the list of recruits coming.

Stanford ends up being as good as they were expected to be, and the Northwestern game was just an aberration.

I was very impressed. They are a different team than the one that lost to NW'ern.

McCaffrey should be getting a lot more Heisman love as well.

Stanford is a better team than they were the opening week. Also, I doubt the Trees played their best game. AND..., Northwestern, while no juggernaut, is respectable this year (end up ranked IMO). Stanford has an excellent chance of winning the PAC and if you beat them, will prove to be a bright red feather in your cap.

McCaffrey is a good back, but that offensive line would make lots of backs look like All Americans. He is no Fournette.

Those who follows ND recruiting considers this a huge weekend and know an impressive showing is a must.

Hey all that matters to ND right now is beating socal! By 1 or 50...no matter. WIN.....rest....add some new wrinkles on offense & defense.......play the BEST players even if young......then take no team lightly......starting with a "Kelly March to PA" over temple & pitt.......then score at least one TD vs BC....to set up a PLAYOFF qualifier vs the trees! 2012 deja vu all over again? Hope so!

WIN tonight!!!

Not sure who the brain trust you speak of is but David Shaw can coach my team any day.

Someone saying he can't get recruits is idiotic and trendy stereo typing and nothing more. Why? Because he uses a fullback ? They run more than pass?
They use a conventional boring offense?

Well that use of the good old fashioned fullback has helped some other teams around the country win championships just fine.

Harbaugh effect - Stanford keeps rolling with his system and style.
The system Shaw coached as and OC there and has kept going for 4-5 years since Harbaugh left? The guy gets credit for turning Stanford around and laying ground work which is still used but Stanford's success now a full recruiting cycle later is much more attributable to what this staff is currently doing.

Stanford would pound Northwestern into complete submission if that game was played today. Herbie called it. 11:00AM start central does not jive with Stanford's west coast time. Too early for the Stanford players.

The Stanford OL is one of the Top OL's in the country. By effectively running the football, Hogan can play the short passing game he does best.

I too think Stanford would win a rematch but using the starting time of the game as an excuse would be incredibly whiny. Pretty sure Shaw would never allow that.

David Shaw would never say it in public, but he probably was not crazy about the idea. I'm sure the ADs had everything to do with this without consulting the HCs. It must have been enough of a potential issue for Herbie to bring it up on "College GameDay" that morning. No matter. What is done is done.

Stanford's playing great football right now. That will be our toughest game remaining.

But first things first. Beat SC!!

Factoid: Shaw was with Harbaugh at SD too.....

So Harbaugh gets credit for anything Shaw ever does then? Not sure how that matters. I guess we should say the same about Belicheck and Saban... man the Belicheck effect is just killing it down in Bama.

Not at all...just pointing out that there is a stronger/longer tie between the 2...... PS. Many folks have no idea how long the 2 worked together. Also, Shaw is an extremely brilliant person....fun to talk to....
Lastly, Stanford's brand of ball is something I wish we'd go back.to.....

To be clear...Teo didn't commit until a couple months after that visit. I believe he had said that even the night before NSD he thought he'd go SC.

Also, one exception doesn't mean that all recruits will think like Teo. I'd prefer to have our team show up, be impressive, and win when the big recruits are on campus.

Correct. Also, Manti is a very religious person and prayed deeply over the decision. He followed his heart and what his belief system told him.....

Very true. He called PC the night before to tell him hi was coming to SC. Prayed all night then called back to say he changed his mind. I can't fault a decision bathed in prayer.

If I were USC I would see if Shaw could be persuaded to come coach USC. They could pay him near double what he makes now ($3.2 bump to $6.0m). He played at Stanford but most everyone has their price. He runs a pro offense, knows the recruiting area, is unlikely to be fazed by the Hollywood spotlight, would be a steadying influence and he is still young. While it is possible for him to win a NC in the next ten years at Stanford, if he coached at USC for that length of time, I think it is probable that he would win one.

Stanford's endowment is over $20 billion. I think southern cal is around 5..... I doubt Shaw would ever consider southern cal without laughing hysterically. He is very very happy where he is at.....

McCaffrey gets touches all over the field, backfield, out of the backfield, returning kicks. What could Fuller or Procise do if they got the ball more all over the field? It doesn't take anything away from being a ND fan to say I would rather the Irish were playing the offensive system of Stanford.
