Shaw/Herman lovers

Bodi, I loved your optimism in the past even when appearing a bit over zealous. You have now done a 180 and it will be interesting to see if BK can win you back. These conversations about BK losing the team and losing his passion are all pure conjecture. They may actually be true but we don't know that. Given the talent level, if you believe the recruiting rankings, ND should be 7-0 right now. 2-5 is unacceptable, but it is what it is. Upcoming Miami is a mediocre team (not bad, but certainly not great by any stretch of the imagination). ND will have had two weeks to regroup. This game will tell us a lot about BK, the ND team's mindset and possible where this program might be headed.

BTW - I agree that optimism would increase if Kelly left the program, but that is generally the case when new coaches come in.. LSU fans were excited to see Miles leave and they have won 3 straight (two of those against less than good opposition). But now they hit the meat of the schedule, so let's see what the thinking is in say 3 weeks. GA on the other hand fired 10-3 Mark Richt and were ecstatic that they hired Kirby Smart from AL. They aren't as enamored now that Ole Miss beat the stew out of them and they just lost at home to Vandy.

Herman better sign that Texas deal ASAP. he's turning into Larry Coker

Young team. Totally new defense. And Kelly sh the bed when he hired BVG. Lost three years. Should he be fired for that awful hire? Hmm... Maybe? I just don't see that many Sabans out there! And oh how the mighty have fallen -- Houston, Stanford, MSU... And urbie loses to Penn State?

To the recruit nicks out there let do a comparison of Urban's players vs. PSU's yesterday!!!!

I love the HC elimination tourney going on with this board. We had Gruden, Cowher, Belichick, Dungy, Herman, Peterson, Stoops, Fleck, Matt Rhule (a hold over from last season), Diaco, Niumatolo, Shaw, Kyle Shanahan, Cryst, Fitz, Saban, Meyer, and now I'm sure Franklin is on someone's radar. And the winner is.....Brian Kelly for 2017.

So beating 9.5 favorite Oklahoma in Norman in 2012 doesn't count, I guess.
Sure it counts....but do you think that game was on the level of...

@FSU 2 years ago...
@Clemson last year...
Any major bowl game Kelly has been to...l
I'm not sure what to say.

See the problem is when we must have everyone and all hands on deck to win a game...Kelly always seemingly finds a way to lose it...whether with his la de dah attitude that extends to his players...or idiotic decisions...something.

There are things Kelly does OK...
Winning a big game is NOT one if them.

Remember when a bunch of people kept saying we need a coach like Shaw who was run out of the stadium against Wash and Wash St. then put up a wallop of a game in a loss to CU today 10-5. Also Houston got gouged by Navy and beat up and down field by SMU tonight. These two teams, whose coaches, everyone has had a chub for both looked like average coaches. Which sometimes just happens and you have some bad games maybe a bad season or so. ND is having a bad season and to those who are crying that our standards are mediocre now are ridiculous. ND will be fine going forward. This season is busted but next season has a lot of promise. If next year mirrors this year then Kelly will likely be shown the door or he'll jet himself. Im sure things get turned around for next year

I am a big Herman supporter. Yes, losing to Navy and SMU hurts his resume. However, if he was the ND coach, I firmly believe ND would be undefeated. I did not watch the SMU game, so I can't really comment on that loss. Navy is a tough nut to crack, Kelly found that out. The talent that Herman would coach at ND, combined with his coaching skills, would make ND a deadly program.

You said Kelly has no big wins. Please explain how beating a favored, eighth-ranked Oklahoma team on the road is not "on the level" of the Florida State and Clemson games.

What did Oklahoma finish that year ? #15
Oklahoma may have been favored ..
We were ranked #5, they we're #8..and as it turned out..OU was a bit overrated..no?

That ND vs. OU match-up was nowhere near the big stage of our big bowl games and the Clemson, FSU games. not even close.

So while it was a nice win....

It wasn't even in the same ball park had we won at the most of elite stages.

we don't ...can't....win those games.

Let me restate, Kelly can't win those types of games.
Unprepared, no sense of feel...call it whatever you want but make no mistake he will continue to keep us from being elite.

Sincerely,
37 drop backs in a hurricane,
1at and goal ..empty sets.
Timeouts to punt.

And the worst one of all, player regression. That is not opinion but pure fact. sadly

Not even close? Because you say so? Did you attend any of those games? Were you there to gauge the atmosphere? While I did not attend the Oklahoma game, I was at last year's Clemson game with family members who attended the 2012 Oklahoma game. They said the atmospheres were very similar---both big games. Winning in Norman against a favored, eighth ranked Oklahoma team is a big win no matter how you slice it. Google some headlines detailing that victory at Oklahoma and see how it was reported. Denying that because it doesn't fit your argument or agenda is facile and disingenuous at best.

Stanford,s offense scored 8 points versus ND; 5 versus Colorado and we're wiped off the map versus the State of Washington. As I have said a million times before. That complicated run and 8th grade passing attack of Stanford will never sniff the College Football playoffs

Tom Herman lost to Navy and SMU???That's right SMU. And the patron Saint of the board Urban Meyer lost to Penn State.

So you guys are now left with Saban and Harbaugh..Brian Kelly is 57-28 over 7 years and ND was 6-1 a calendar year ago. So let's not pretend there has been zero success, because when you say that you sound like fools, morons and misfit toys.

Jack Swarbrick watches the program daily and sees the program from an INFORMED point of view. And if he thinks BK is the right guy moving forward... I think thats great. Switching coaches hasn't done crap in 22 years so why would it do anything now?

Looking forward to seeing ND rise out of the ashes with Brian Kelly leading them out of the tunnel in 2018. And the "sewing circle" retreat back under the rocks they ooze out from when ND loses football games.
All the coaches you mentioned have a better record this year than Kelly. You are a fool to buy into Jack's crap.

OK smart guy...

If you think that OU game was on the same level as those other LOSSES then you've no sense of reality.

No matter how much you want to apologize for this disgrace of head football coach at Notre Dame, I'll continue on with my reality observation.

P.s.

Just to reiterate because you seemingly suffer from selective reading....

I've clearly said that OU win was a nice win but I don't care how much Vegas said we were underdogs in that game we were #5, they were 8...I felt fully confident instead game. it just was NOT on the level of the others in discussion.

See you think that OU game was gigantic because we won and it helps your apologies for Brian Kelly ..

I'm done with this talk.

Brian Kelly sucks. Period

This game will tell us a lot about BK, the ND team's mindset and possible where this program might be headed.

See this is the problem.

How many "this game tells a lot" times do we need to reaffirm what we've known for a while.

He's a lousy coach and is doing the players, fans, university, etc...a huge disservice.

But hey...I know...we'll see after this bye week. this will tell a lot.

I've been critical of Kelly this season; it's clear that the program has fallen off of a cliff. So accusing me of making apologies for him are false. But you can't make a credible argument when you ignore facts. The Oklahoma game was a big victory whether you think so or not. And who made you the arbiter of which opponents constitute a big game? You don't want to admit that beating Oklahoma in 2012 was a big game because it doesn't fit your narrative. Period. You have offered no other explanation other than your opinion. When I asked if you attended any of the games you mentioned, you declined to answer (just like you refused to answer my question about your alma mater in another thread). Now you're getting angry because you have no rational reply.

As for having no sense of reality, you were the one who stated on another thread that ND should lower its academic standards and admit JUCOs in order to improve the football program---the likelihood of which is virtually zero. And you're the one accusing me of having no grasp of reality? Yeah, sure. Again, it seems you would be happier supporting a program like Alabama or Ohio State. You obviously have zero understanding of what ND is about.

You are professional at selective reading.

What I said was either lower standards or hire a coach that finds a way instead of excuses...however quit making ****ing excuses about why the elite level can't happen.

No, you didn't. You advocated for ND to lower academic standards and take JUCOs. If you think that's likely to happen, then you're absolutely clueless. As I stated in that thread:

"The question implies that ND's struggles on the field are a result of tightened academic standards, and further suggests that loosening academic standards is a panacea for ND's current problems. One need only look to Stanford as a recent example (other than this season) of both a strong academic and athletic program."

As my comment implies, if Stanford can do it, then so can ND. So, I was actually arguing against making excuses. Nice try, though. Again, if you think lowering academic standards are the panacea for ND's problems, then go root for Alabama or Ohio State. Those programs seem to be more your speed.

elite is done and gone; ain't gonna happen unless someone in admin thinks they need a new infusion of $.

It is over; the only BIG WIN left is to see the 2 perps put on a train outta town!

As for national champion contention, that train has left the station!

Jack has run up the 'white flag' .... endorsements and TV deals are bringing in enough revenue to satisfy. Winning is no longer necessary.

#5, Number 5, Numero Cinco
Well hyped game as #5 vs #8 goes.....
No where near a beating of a #1 or #2 or 3 or #4 or #5 or #6 or #7....
PS it took Harbaugh 5 games to take a 1-11 team he inherited and beat a #1..... El Porky is el stinko....

Fair statements sometimes the offense does look disjointed and this season has made things looks even worse bc we are losing. But answer this does any coach just get his team to a national championship game? Bc I don't believe that.
Gene Chizik

Gene Chizik

Come on dude be fair and stop being upset we're having a rough year. Kelly is a very good coach not Elite imo college football only has 3. Every coach has faults. The next guy in is always better because we've never seen him coach the Irish let him have three losses and you'll be chanting fire him too. Gene Chizik did something Auburn hadn't done in ages. It is not a fluke. You guys have to understand that ND isn't a football school it's an elite Catholic academic instituion with a great history of football in a college landscape that has changed. We'll have good years bad years and some great years. Even if we won the natty vs Bama and we were at this point in the season under Kelly's era the vast majority would be singing the same tune.

Kelly is a good coach that had 1 great year, 1 good year, 1 terrible year and 4 average years. He loses games every year due to awful decisions. This notion that this season is the only reason Kelly needs to go is wrong, its just the final straw. The real reason he needs to go are the string of winnable games he has lost over the last 7 years that lead to those average seasons

perception: recruits see a non- contender; once recruiting fails, the lifeblod is cut off.
From the start, the notion Kelly recruited so great was a fabrication, so to have further falloff and then let it continue for 2 more years will spell the end for ND as being in the playoff conversation.

For those that understand this, I am preaching to the chior, for others including (JS&Co.)
“Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? ...?”

Good points. Here's the issue we don't get paid to be fans on Saturdays, Jack gets paid to right the ship we don't have a better replacement lined up. If Kelly doesn't show improvement by next year he's out. The hardest thing about successful people is to notice when they have to adjust hence not throwing the ball 37 times in a monsoon when you're in the game. I think this season will go a long way in making him understand you have to run different sets offensively in red zone primarily under center or even throughout the game. Play action would work great if we had a TE that was a pass catcher losing Alize hurt our offense a ton. I still have confidence in him and our team. Go Irish "win some games."

Just spit balling here...but if we'd won the NC...the fan wouldn't be pissed and calling for dismissal. Why?

Because we'd have much more competent coach who wouldn't look absolutely stupid Inna hurricane, timeouts to punt, empty sets from the 6 yard line on first and goal....and maybe, just maybe, we'd run some plays north and south instead of east and west.
We might also hurry up and snap the ball since we are going no huddle to keep the defense from substituting.

I could go on.

Thx

It's been a rough year. I know but I just don't see us becoming a juggernaut in college football anymore we'll have some good a few great and some bad seasons but bad should be 6-6 record. That NC State game was pathetic and I think Kelly chucked the ball all around because he was feeling the pressure.

After Charlie's second to last season we went 7 and 6 then 6 and 6 IMO Kelly can't go 6 and 6 next year this team should win a minimum of 9 games. An I do believe that they can we are not getting blown out in any of these games we're losing by a touch or less. If we were getting steamrolled I would say he can't do it. We'll be fine next year couple breaks here and there this season we would have been undefeated at worst 5 and 2, albeit we would not be happy because the way we played and won wouldn't have been impressive. Truthfully that's what's the most frustrating thing is we shouldn't be 2 and 5 but we are.

You make your own luck and fortunate bounces. If you've a good foundation...I.e. coaching staff you can overcome the unfortunate breaks

We're so far from any of the above

Rather a silly veiled criticism.

Politicians have long have had different private vs. public opinions such as on abortion and other issues. There is a difference between personal belief and a policy aimed at bettering society.
The admin are acting like positions. Publicly they say they play for championships and it would appear privately not so much.
