Selection Committee

Alabama being selected over FSU is a complete farce. It shows that the committee are nothing more than a bunch of SEC bag men.

In selecting the "best" 4 teams, shouldn't those selections be based upon what the competing teams actually did on the field, and not on what the committee thinks might happen in a future hypothetical match up? FSU ran the table. Alabama didn't. And FSU did it without their best player for the last couple of games. In the ACC championship game FSU started a QB making his first career start, yet still found the wherewithal to win the game. They did it with a suffocating defense: 7 sacks, 14 TFL and 10 passes defended. Apparently the committee thinks a strong defensive team isn't qualified to play for the championship. That is a slap in the face to the FSU players and coaching staff.

I would love to see the FSU team take the field for the Orange Bowl, and then walk off en masse in protest of this unjust decision. This is a sad day for college football.

Agree they got it right, but if were interviewing Boo Coorigan right now I would ask if he believe Georgia is the 6th best team today
The same people who are saying Bama should be in are the people who believe in multiple genders. Come up with as many reasons as you can but at the end of the day the facts are FSU won their schedule out. That’s what makes College football exciting. Control your own destiny by winning. Every game is important.

If we could just get our players to remember that.

If FSU was left out due to an injured QB, and on-field results don't matter, then put Georgia back in. They only lost by 3 with their TE obviously injured and a couple of other injuries during the game. Those guys will be back, so obviously Georgia is the better team.

FSU went undefeated with their second and third string QB winning them games. Rodemaker would be back for the bowl game.

SEC overrated all year.
SeC was average this year, losing record to the ACC. Rankings always follow the $$$, who knows how many teams actually deserve their ranking. We’re Ole Miss and LSU really any good?

Yet another year why, as I've said from day 1, the playoff should've been more than 4 teams.

There are ALWAYS going to be more than 4 teams that "deserve" to play for the championship of a sport.

Not a job I would want, but I would've picked Alabama too. No way FSU would beat them. And that will essentially be proven when Georgia beats them by 2+ TD's. You have to talk about context in a situation where 1 team is undefeated and 1 has 1 loss on this level. I know a lot of you just blindly hate the SEC no matter what and it clouds your judgement, but the reality is what it is.
It is not supposed to be about projected games…it’s about your body of work. FSU won ALL of their games, they should be in plain and simple!

No...the committee is supposed to pick the 4 best teams and FSU without their starting QB isn't one.

Why play the games? If wins don’t matter, let’s just decide who we would like to see match up and put them in the playoffs

and LOST one at HOME.
Perhaps if they played that Powerhouse FSU schedule they wouldn't have.

It was Number 55 if you're curious and if you think that FSU was one of the 4 best teams in the country you don't know if the ball has air or feathers in it.

That is what the committee was charged with picking----the best 4 teams.

Not the most deserving 4 teams the best 4 teams.

There is a difference.

Imagine if they had done that with Clemson in 2016. A team that had the 47th strength of schedule and lost to 8-5 Pitt late in the season.

Has this been documented anywhere? Genuine question - I'm not just being a contrarian. When I've heard committee members being asked about "best team" vs "most deserving team" they have deflected and pivoted to other subjects every time. If there's any written guideline about how they are supposed to choose, I would love to see it.

Personally, I agree with the "most deserving" crowd. I think most regular season games become meaningless if the playoffs are reserved for the best teams in the opinion of the playoff committee. But if they're actually charged with choosing the best teams rather than the most deserving, then maybe their surprising picks were justified.

Who is to say FSU is more deserving than Alabama? Did FSU go undefeated in the SEC and knock off the #1 team in the country the last week of the season? No they beat up on the craptastic ACC while Alabama survived the SEC gauntlet. I think an argument can be made for Alabama both in terms of most deserving and best team.

The SEC gauntlet was 7-9 OOC. Enough said

While I would be happy to respond to this question from another poster, I know that you only chime in when you want to divert a conversation to the same couple of points you obsessively emphasize. I'll pass.

Pennick, I would still be interested in your thoughts.

So I assume the committee in its fairness will put FSU back in if one of the other four playoff team's quarterbacks injures himself in a practice leading up to the game? That's what so ridiculous in how they made their decision. Did FSU's offense look weak with a freshman QB last night, yes it did, but wouldn't they have a month of preparation with their now healthy backup QB to get ready for the game?

It's a really bad look for the NCAA but with NIL and the open door transfer portal, it's almost to be expected now. Listening to the guy try to explain it and then Chris Fowler basically slobbering over his "expertise" was pathetic.
Exactly

College football has long been a farce. We as ND fans should know this better than anybody. The voters stole a NC from the Irish in 1993 because they wanted Bobby Bowden to have one. Ironically FSU now gets jobbed on the basis of sophistry.

This is entertainment. Decisions are made for a few dollars more. I support ND out of history and nostalgia...but also in defiance to the NCAA, that somebody can beat them with some modicum of standards.

Pipe dream, as now they're openly pushing their doublespeak. Wins now are secondary to forecasting the future. Welcome to our modern Ministry of Truth.

They had a narrative in mind and enforced it. I wonder if next time they select 2 deserving SEC teams? Gotta be honest: anybody spending big $$$ on NCAA is a sucker in so many ways.

I watched an FSU defense play better defense than everyone that played Friday and Saturday. No one is mentioning that. Their defensive line just absolutely dominated.
The SEC is an Auburn defensive coordinator blunder away from being left out of the playoffs.
Good post and I get it about Auburn being brain dead but AL would beat fsu by 3tds right now without Travis and I fricking hate alabammy

The SEC has 7 teams in the top 20 in F+. The next closest is the PAC at 4.
F+ is absolute trash. The polls that count have only 5 SEC teams in the Top 25, with ACC and BIG at 4 each.

Exactly. I am bemused by all the ND fans here who are apologists for the selection committee's screw job of FSU. Maybe many are too young to remember 1993. And if the shoe was on the other foot yesterday and ND had been passed over like FSU was, what would the reaction on this board have been? It would have made Chernobyl and TMI look like a couple of farts in the wind.

The fundamental problem with the selection committee's decision is that they substituted their subjective "eyeball test" judgments for actual results on the field of play. Woulda, coulda, shoulda aren't substitutes for actual performance. Would FSU have had a tough time in the playoff without Jordan Travis under center? Sure. But the point that apparently escaped the committee: FSU EARNED that right. Alabama had a fine season, and Saban is a great coach, probably the greatest of all time. But they lost a game, and but for Auburn's inexplicable collapse, should have lost another. Alabama is a worthy participant in the CFB playoffs. The problem is, they are less worthy than FSU.

This decision wasn't fair. It wasn't just. And it wasn't right. No amount of sophistry and post hoc rationalization by the selection committe or those fans and SEC sycophants who are OK with that decision will change that. Yesterday was a sad day for college football. It is hard not to be cynical about college football anymore. But sadly, I guess that ship sailed a long time ago.

Good point, GA wasnt even in the conversation yesterday. 7 teams have legit reasons for being in.

Good post and i agree with you. 4 teams just arent enough. That all changes next year. THANK GOD

Florida State won a conference championship game with a third string freshman QB. That speaks volumes to how good of a team they have.

Florida State's defense on Saturday night:
188 yards given up
14 tackles for loss
7 sacks
10 pass breakups.

Championship level defense. Anyone who says Florida St isn't one of the four best is delusional. Last time I checked teams played offense AND defense.

"4 best"

Define "BEST"? How is "BEST" measured? What are the factors/parameters that determine who is "BEST"?
If fsu played GA AL or osu they would lose by 21 points. Its all speculation and I agree its total BS but this is shit show that college football created. Wish this would have happened 10 years ago so it would have gotten fixed faster. Next year its fixed with 12 teams
