We’re still in the running for Kaleb Smith, aren’t we? With Colzie and Thomas and Merriweather and Styles showing promise, and the quality of our 23 commits, I don’t see us wanting more than one receiver from the portal. Have you read that Smith is trending somewhere else?

If we brought him back for leadership and to be a depth guy just in case, good move. If we brought him back to play, bad move
Odds he’s returning first punt in Ireland?

I just don’t know how you bring back a 6th year walk on theta on scholly but plays like walk on vs get anyone at any position they can help through portal

I don’t know but I’d rather take two portal wrs than take a player you KNOW isn’t going to make a difference

If you think having Salerno back is good news that’s scary
Any statements you make I look for the opposite to happen and that's usually how it plays out. You've been wrong far more times than you've been right. You're the resident punching bag on this board and you don't even realize it. Now THAT'S scary.

Ever heard of a guy named Chris Finke? Salerno might be that guy made over.

He's right though. Elite football programs are ALWAYS super crunched for numbers. Their decision is "do we sign this 4+ star recruit or do we take this 4+ star transfer?

In contrast NDs back end of their roster seems to always have a handful of guys the quality of Matt Salerno on it while not even having a full 85 scholarship players on the roster.

Yet another key area handicapping the football program.

Those names are paper names.

It shouldn't seem such a revelation that those names are at ND yet everyone says wait until next year. Just wait.

I'll wait until we start using the damn receivers properly or in some cases giving them more than crumbs

It's a position that the absolutely positively best athlete needs to be playing regardless of tenure.

All top programs get their perimeter playmakers on the field no matter their class.

We don't do that whatsoever!!

You want to compare a guy that had over 100 receptions at nd vs a guy that has 6?

What? Hes not close to Finke

I posted it because Salerno back has means we have schollies literally to waste… if he’s fair catching punts that’s an issue, if he’s getting snaps at wr that’s an issue

Seems like great guy that team loves but we have holes at qb wr safety dline

We had a QB that had ONE target, and that was Mayer. So Salerno never got the ball, nor did most of the other receivers.

I didn't say Salerno was Finke. My point was that, when Finke was on the roster, basically few on here gave him any credit, but he performed when he had to. And I feel Salerno can do the same.

Every team today needs a Renfrow type.
The problem is we utilize our perimeter receivers in far too many curl and sit routes.
Like a slot receiver.

Problem #2 is Finke nor Salerno have the talent to be like a Renfrow

Wait until Merriweather gets there. Wait until next year...
Wait wait wait...

Oh wait...
He finished 2022 with 1 career reception for a 41 yard score.

Now I have to tell ya...
If that isn't the best recipe for selling high star receivers to come here I don't know what is.

Come here with all the acolades and show off your talent. We'll get you the ball!!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

One reception!!!

Now that's getting the talent involved!!!

I’ll be happy if we get Kaleb from the portal and signatures on the line from our current commits. But we need a QB and game plan that makes good use of what might be a really strong group of receivers. That’s on Freeman and Rees to deliver.

Yep, ND needs to be above 85 scholarships going into spring practice.

Again, need help at QB, WR, Dline, Safety

Defensive backfield has been a weak area now for several years. Going into next year, we have Morrison and Hart as our corners, and maybe Mickey as our nickel. Sounds as though Joseph is likely to return and start At one safety spot. You mentioned getting a safety from the portal, and I haven’t read anything suggesting we’re looking for one. We have some young guys who should battle Henderson and Brown for the open safety position. Do you like anyone?

Honestly I like watts. But depth wise I’d move Barnes there (hear that may have started) and I’d have Lewis as a backup swing role corner/safety. I’m not high on henderson but hope I’m wrong.

Not sure on portal who is good and available but I assume there are some

Xavier Watts
Watts seemed to improve weekly as he made the transition. He is definitely going to see a lot of playing time. I’ve read similar things as Nasty suggests regarding Barnes. I personally think we have talent from our last two classes, just need to get the best fits and develop as a unit.

We’re in agreement about both Watts and Barnes. Would like to think Lewis will make giant strides like Bracy when moved to nickel; but I also think Mickey might be our best option there. And of course, the mystery of where Bowen ultimately signs hangs over all this.

Bracy has much better quickness and probably speed than Lewis. I think bracy did well at nickel due to covering much shorter routes and quick passes.

Lewis did not play well at nickel when bracy went out. I think Lewis could be serviceable safety
