I’ve been outspoken about benching RL or giving Angeli a chance to play. While RL doesn’t quite pass the look test, I’m trying to remain objective. Below are his rankings compared to other DI quarterbacks this year. I pulled the stats from ESPN today, so they likely don’t include today’s game. I believe the coaches should give Angeli some snaps in the next game.

QBR - #38
PAA - #58
Plays - #35
EPA - #47
Pass - #94
Run - #7
Sack - #63
PEN - #30
RAW - #61

It's not going to happen. They're committed to Leonard. The belief is that RL has the talent to elevate this offense, but they need time to develop. Now whether or not that happens is another story. I do believe RL and the offense is improving though.

RL played great today. Collins, Ford and Price did not. He missed a few, sure. But he is a gamer and probably will spend the night in an ice bath. No issues with him.

Agree with your comments, but IMO the coaches are being stubborn. They're missing an opportunity to give another play a shot who could outperform RL

Ford and Price were rightly benched from coaches after fumbling. Riley is a gamer, but he also isn't a good passer. Ranked as #94 speaks for itself.

Stats or not he sucks

see, that is where this coach is failing
when a player does not produce in the games, what he does in practice means nothing
He has 9 TDs in the last 2.5 games.

His QBR will be top 30 by the end of the day. Top 35 for sure

Why not use his season stats?

They are beyond terrible throwing with countless wide open WRs
He played a bad game against NIU. Especially after his injury

His QBR is top 30 in the country after tonight. That's for the season.

Why can't I use the last 3 games? Is he not allowed to improve during the year? After missi g all of spring?

I like Angeli, and I certainly understand why posters here want him to be the guy, or to at least get an opportunity. But....the staff has been very clear (through actions) that Leonard is the guy for 24. If he's healthy and if the team is in the hunt for the playoff, then Leonard is going to be QB1.

Angeli is absolutely the backup (and a damn good one), and he's not going to get a "chance", unless RL gets hurt. And if that happens, I'll be fully confident in Angeli's ability to lesd the O and beat everyone left on the schedule.

But the speculation about Angeli getting a shot is nothing more than wishful thinking.

Leonard is QB1.

Riley Leonard struggles in Denbrock’s offense against competition that isn’t top shelf.

But I am not nearly as down on him as others are.

He is the best QB for this team.

He struggles when the OL struggles

He needs to and can be better but the fact people are just ignoring how the OL struggles is just showing how biased they are

He's improved the last 2.5 games and I expect him to continue to improve. Hopefully Schrauth is back by next game

Riley is not a passing quarterback never will be. Should be on Navy or Army a run first offense that never passes. We are so one dimensional that Lousville absolutely shut us down something any good team will do. I also think it's a combination that Freeman is super conservative and likes winning ugly until we lose another two games Freeman will keep Riley in there or until Riley breaks a rib which seems more likely.

He played grade first quarter and awful next 3

Maybe, but I kind of feel like we went into a prevent offense....until they scored......that last TD, the credit is going to love which it should but that pass by Riley was beautiful. People will say he was wide open, it was short.....RL is retreating backwards, tossing off his back foot, has 3 DL closing, and one breaking back to knock it down.....he is falling away, shoots over a DE that is jumping up and puts it right into Loves hands.... I just think the second half was a bit of lack of trust by MD and MF in RL......they manufactured the second half win

LMFAO, he blew his load in the first quarter. After that he was mediocre at best. Stick to DC evaluations, you are really good at that!
He wasn't perfect. But he was certainly a problem for Louisville. He guy battles his ass off. He absolutely does.

He's not gonna throw for 400 like Ewers or Manning. But the guy has grit.

Or Beck, Milroe, Gabriel, Moss, Nussmeier, or Fifita. And these are just the QB’s I saw yesterday.

That said, you are right. RL battles his ass off and does his best with the people around him.

It’s all you can ask.

We all know that the QB gets too much credit and too much blame in football. It comes with the territory, especially playing qb at ND. So, I understand the criticisms of Leonard’s passing, which has been inexplicably pathetic at times. What I don’t understand is the failure to acknowledge that we have two starters on the OL that earned their starts, a true freshman playing left tackle who was third string two weeks before the season and who is better suited for interior line play, and the simple reality that our current pieced together OL cannot pass block! Leonard was 17-23 for 173 yards rolling to his right on most passing plays because the staff recognizes our OL cannot provide a decent pocket. The few times where a good pocket has been provided, Leonard has stepped into his throws with some success going deep. But until or unless this OL improves dramatically in pass blocking, Leonard’s passing stats will be mediocre and our running game will suffer as defenses just stack the box like Louisville. Leonard’s running ability is beyond critical given this reality.

His second half yesterday was terrible, the most recent half of football he played

Leonard vs. Angeli; While Leonard has his limitations and clearly has had his challenges throwing the football, he is a much stronger, physical player than Angeli
and thus gives ND offense a greater chance of success. Hopefully his passing can improve. And, actually he got better yesterday.

It’s as Telx says. The line was young and inexperienced entering the season and now the left side are all backups. They leak like a sieve and RL has no choice but to roll right. Opposing defense knows and they’re tracking him right. Add in he does throw erratic at times so it seems like a mess. I don’t know the answer but this bye week is coming at a good time.

WHAT? Did you watch the game? He got worse as the game went on other then the screen TD pass in the 4th

LMFAO, good 1st qtr, mediocre to crap rest of the game
With zero context of course. Huge bias. The OL was getting whooped so they rolled him out right most plays because we couldn't block them. We couldn't run the ball at all. He had to get the ball out of his hands within 2 seconds

No context on the false starts, holding and block in the back...of course not

His QBR for the game was 74. He had a good game

17 of 23 2 touchdowns no interceptions. Not many yards but having a good D with a QB who does not throw interceptions is valuable. We won't beat Alabama or Georgia, but not many will. We will have to put up points to beat USC.

We have no idea what the belief is. That's completely immaterial and unknowable. But it does appear they're going to stay with their prize portal QB, that cost us a million five all the same. And whatever, it's not like Steve Angeli is some five star guy waiting in the wings. He's okay, and he's almost certainly a better passer. But with RL's Tebow-like skill set, if our OC is crafty enough, we can beat everybody on the schedule. And there just isn't enough in the backups to compel a QB switch notwithstanding RL's very definite passing shortcomings. I don't think RL 'elevates' the offense, it's the opposite. He hinders it. But we're trying to make do.
