Rees’ playcalling today

Just ftr, I’m not “tossing any olives” at rees’ feet. 😂 I’m just saying he called a good game yesterday. That’s not always the case. You can blame him for fans wavering back and forth about his playcalling. It’s inconsistent, so naturally, the praise & the ripping will go up and down. That’s the problem, he can call a great play, or series, or game, but then can call a shitty play, or series, or game. Anyone that thought his playcalling wasn’t a problem in the 2nd half of navy, along w/ many other halves in his tenure, isn’t watching, imho. Let’s hope we get the play actions to go w/ the running game & some rolls instead of the constant straight dropbacks to counter pressure against the Trojans. He has it in him cuz we’ve seen really good playcalling at times, just not as consistent as we’d like. Jmo

I don't think it's actually olives, that's wrong. It's palm fronds, right? I guess he had a good game yesterday, we certainly rolled BC with ease. Almost too easy, I can't believe they were that shitty. I was amazed!

But the preoccupation with Rees' play-calling chops really has reached a fever pitch. That's a fairly subtle and/or complicated thing to be able to comment on discerningly. I certainly wouldn't know how to accurately or knowledgeably rate a coach's play-calling. Other than, did we put up a bunch of yards and points? I remember being very impressed by the 2nd quarter drive vs Clemson to go up 14-0. It seemed like every play worked, and caught Clemson off guard. And it was just satisfying to watch!

Even now, I just don't get how ND could have been so bad at the start. We've all discussed it, probably some combination of nerves, bad play calling, weak QB play, inexperience, and the inertia of last season. Geez, losing to Marshall and Stanford.

And yes, the OL in particular was bad.

But the Irish look like a totally different team now. I don't think any team save Georgia would be confident against ND right now. Imagine if ND had a real QB after this type of fast discovery and evolution?

Sports always remind me of the limits of my analytical and predictive capabilities. Again, I can't explain this transformation.

Agree. If this was our OL all season, we would be in the top 4 right now. I'm guessing number 3 with all of America rooting against us again (minus ND fans of course).

Probably some combo to your point, both backs were fairly new. Maybe they were missing those blitz's up the gut that Kyren used to destroy people on. Maybe the TE's where leaking pressure or missing kick outs.

If you look at 21 vs 22 stats, it's hard to believe honestly. The schedule in 2021 was as easy as they come. 22 has been much tougher. We have more YPC, more YPG, more points per game and allowed less.

This team is better in every stat than 21. Tells us something about MF getting this moving after some disasters early.

USC plays poor on defense, mostly the line and linebackers, and they absolutely excel at the skill positions on offense. We have to control Williams and seriously limit his runs and passes While extending plays with his legs. It will be interesting to see what Golden and Freeman come up with as a defensive game plan, and whether our younger less experienced linebackers see more action.
Something akin to what Holtz cooked up against FSU and Charlie Ward, although Williams strikes me as being much better than Ward.

As bad as the Detroit lions are, their OC has called some absolutely awesome plays today. I’d love to see Rees call some of these plays. If you’ve watched the game, you know what I’m talking about. Some fantastic running plays. One where the OL went in motion and blocked as a TE. Another on 4th and inches where the receiver ran the ball. Both were $$.
