Proud of this team for a 10-2 year with the injuries, but the defense has to change

First let me say that this team has a lot to be proud of. It lost its starting qb, rb, te, nt, and a slew of other players for a majority of the year and still won 10 games. Most of us were predicting a 10 win season even before the injuries.

However, the defense is just not good. The line gets little pressure, the blitzes don't work , they can't cover the middle of the field, the dbs don't look for the ball, and they often don't seem to understand their assignments well enough to defend. They may be the worst team I have ever seen on third down. How long is ND going to settle for a defense that allows points like this? Fire Van Gorder and get a new defensive coordinator.

Finally, Coach Kelly, you are never going to win an NC if you don't develop a power running game inside the 20. You will continue to have quarterbacks that throw picks in the red zone due to the tighter coverage, and when they don't you will kick field goals like most of the game tonight.

Let's hope for a matchup with michigan in a bowl game. They looked pretty bad.

I do agree the defense HAS to change. When Redfield said it was easier to learn Chinese than BVG's defense that should be a HUGE warning sign.

And yes we need a TE or put a lineman in the backfield inside the RZ.

Sorry, that doesn't fly when you start guys in the secondary that were all 4 and 5 star guys. You have NFL talent in your linebacker corp, and your DLine also starts three guys who were 4 stars coming out of highschool. You must develop the talent. It isn't happening, and the defensive scheme is poor. Note Stanford's last "drive".

That last irish drive was great. Our defense just couldn't stop them until it was too late. Kelly has done a great job but I agree it is clear the Van Gorder experiment is over.

Reality it lost its top 2 QB's (Golsen) and its top 3 RBs (Bryant). Team 127 was a combined 4 points and 2 ill timed turn overs from 12-0 and a #1 ranking.

I know everyone will bitch and moan about Kelly and the defense. Yes, our secondary played terrible tonight and any pass tossed up was a connection but this years team over came obstacles no other team had to and kept us in the hunt until 6 seconds left in a long season.

Congrats Coach. Congrats D-Line. Congrats Jaylon. Congrats all of the O.

I'm not sure how we fix that secondary for next year but if team 128 has the heart 127 did and we can finally get this injury goat off our back watch out....2 top QB's, talented receivers, O-Line back and most of the D back (Come on Jaylon, you only get 4 years of college in an 85 year life) it could be another great Kelly team.

Thanks to all the boys on this team. Thanks to the coaches. I can say for the first time in a long time the entire year was exciting to the last few seconds. I thought we had it.

Kelly needs a redzone o. Now. D needs more talent. Martini and joe should never see the field at notre dame from a talent standpoint. Kelly has us competitive but can't win any games that really matter.

The d backs have probably missed on at least 12 interceptions this year. They refuse to turn and look. Untimely face masks have been bad at least 3 times. D schemes are all over the place. No improvement since Texas game.I agree on Van Gorder change but only him.

We have all come to be accepting of 10 - 2 as a great season. Well it's NOT, not when you have to defend 25 seconds for 11 - 1. Inexcusable
