Pay Coach Kelly

My thought is Brian Kelly would slide past Dan Devine. Only because Dan Devine was handed a Rolls Royce program in 1975. ND beat Alabama to win it all in 1973. Then beat Alabama again in 1974 to win the Orange Bowl to finish 10-2.

Brian Kelly inherited a program from Charlie Weis that may have been in the worst shape in school history.

he may yet.

Curious. Why do you have Devine in front of Holtz?
because I think he did a better job albeit in a shorter tenure. I just think overall devine was a better coach. lou had his share of stinker games and his last three years were less than stellar. just my opinion. I would take any of them though.

Interesting perspective. I have Holtz ahead of Devine for a couple reasons: Devine took over a program which was in much better shape than the one Holtz took over; and (2) Holtz did it over a period twice as long as Devine. Devine also had his share of bad games, including 1976 and 1980 to Ga Tech.

I guess I'm talking overall not just at nd.

agree with your point about the state of the programs at those times. I will say it was much tougher following a legend like ara than following faust. expectations were much higher. Kelly I believe inherited an even worse program than lou did.

TM is a troll plain and simple. He is either a Mich or USC fan - just over here constantly stirring the pot - trying to rile ND fans up. The thing is - is that he is clueless when it comes to the game of football and how a Div College football program is run. I honestly think he is from another country and grew up as a soccer fan. He has no basic understanding of the game of "American Football".

As for Holtz and Devine both did a great job - Holtz was frustrating at times - whenever he had ND as a big favorite his game plan seemed to be always - "play not to lose" - very conservative - He was actually better when ND was an underdog - then he would be more creative and was also able to get the boys very fired up to play. Devine was also a very good coach. In a lot of ways - he seemed to be under appreciated by the ND faithful - a little like BK is somewhat underappreciated. Although I feel BK detractors are only a few knuckleheads who have no clue about how hard it is to coach and oversee a big time program like ND.

BK has made some mistakes - but, they all do - Holtz and Devine included - but, as a whole BK has done a great job when you take into account all aspects of being a head coach and running a program.

Coach Kelly may be the best at ND since the 85 scholarship rule, but it would of been interesting to see how coach Holtz would of done if the 85 rule was applied at the beginning of his career at ND.

I think coach Weis might of inherited a slightly worse program, but didn't have the admin skills coach Kelly has

Kelly may have inherited more talent but the program as a whole was an absolute train wreck. Willingham at the end was still a better administrator than weis.

I agree on the admin position but a terrible recruiter and was leaving the program in worse shape

You obviously are lying and making a blanket statement. I talk to local coaches and the ones that follow ND think he is in over his head. Tell me what exactly has Kelly won at ND? Nothing.

Understood and you think Fox News is actually news -- your are a pathetic Hannity hand job

Go away -- people are trying to have a football discussion w-o any juvenile interruptions.

Lock down a guy who couldn't figure out to go for 1 at Clemson? He did the same crap versus NW last year. His decision that night in south Carolina will end up costing ND a final 4 bid. ND would be better off if he went to the NFL and failed there. We need someone that doesn't assault people on camera. I'd like someone who doesn't embarrass the university. Good Lord, must he pout every time the camera is on him?

Really? You just got my vote for dumbest post of the year.

Why do you have to bring politics into a football discussion all the time? That is juvenile.
Bodi - as I recall you got after coach kelly pretty hard last yr -- nice job seamlessly hopping on the bandwagon -- tell that nit wit to take that logo off his name and I will leave the fox news commentary on the sideline -- that logo should offend any open minded american

Kelly is a very good coach. I have never understood the vitriol hurled at him. Yes, he is emotional and shows it, but would you want a coach without passion?

Every coach makes mistakes, but I honestly believe Kelly is a top 5 college coach, maybe better, and this year with all the injuries magnifies what a good job he does.

Imagine if he could recruit kids who don't pass the academic muster?

When a modern day Coach has success at multiple levels and or multiple stops, it means he is one of the best in business. Saban (Toledo, MSU, LSU and Bama) Meyer (Bowling Green, Utah, UF and OSU) Kelly (Grand Valley, Central Michigan, Cincinnati and ND)

Ara P, (Miami of Ohio, Northwestern and ND) Devine (ASU, Missouri and ND) Holtz (William & Mary, NC State, Arkansas, Minnesota, and ND)

No coaching hire is a guarantee. But it seems to me the potential for error gets reduced by a multiple of 5, when you hire a guy who has won at 2 stops or more.

One of the talking heads on ESPN says that he would be a good fit for Georgia if Mark is fired. The fellow said Brian's recruiting would be off the charts in a talent rich state like GA without the recruiting restrictions he faces at Notre Dame.

And why would Brian Kelly take a step back?

I, and I think most people would disagree.

That is not a shot at UGA, but ND is far higher profile with just as much recent success and far more overall success and exposure nationally, even internationally.
Georgia certainly would not be a step back. a lateral move for sure.

At UGA its just as easy to recruit if not easier with the lack of restrictions and the fertile backyard
UGA will pay more to you and way more to for your coordinators
The exposure gap is not as big as you suggest with UGA in the SEC and able to compete for an SEC championship in the easier division.

ND has the name and history but with that comes a burden that is not at UGA.

Both are top 10 jobs for sure, I would and have argued that UGA is a top 5 job potentially. Not sure how far of a step down UGA would be for Kelly and with the benefits I am not sure sure it is a definite step down.

**That being said I don't see BK going to Georgia or having any interest in leaving ND for an SEC job.**

Regarding the job comparison, it depends on the criteria. What does Mark Richt make?

Best 5 jobs in CFB, in no order.

ND
Alabama
USC
Michigan
Texas

Some coaches look at different items and some look to where they can recruit and win above all else, but these are the best jobs. Money is good everywhere and not a determining factor.

Michigan is not better then UGA, Ohio St., or either Florida big dog. Money matters to these coaches to say otherwise is to live in fantasy land. Underrated aspect of money is how much schools are willing to pay assistants

hardly. look no further than the 3 coaching searches following the holtz regime. the number of high profile, successful coaches to show even a hint of interest in the job was minimal. the position of head football coach at nd may be as high profile as any but the "job" is not for lots of reasons.

Urban Meyer is not at ND because he refused to accept the challenge of true student athletes. I agree that the ND job is not for everyone but being the successful Irish coach eclipses success anywhere else.

You may not think so but most people realize the high bar that is Notre Dame and the payoff at the end.

The expectations for ND Football are incongruous with the academic environment the Head Coach has to navigate. Which is why the Head Coaches at ND moving forward should be guys in their mid to late 40's, who've had success at multiple 2nd tier schools.

Proven winners who bring experience but have enough youth and energy to handle the rigors of being the Head Coach at ND. And are hungry for advancement and want to prove themselves at a Super Power.

Guys like Saban, Meyer or Stoops who've essentially run their campuses like Kings, are not going to step back and have to suddenly fight and negotiate for getting the things they want and need. They have simply had the red carpet rolled out for too long.
