golfers out there: ?

how are the tee times determined for this tournament ? Is it a random 'pick out of a hat' type thing?

Not sure … but I suspect that in any golf tournament, the organizers (the USGA in the US Open) try to get the stars in the middle half of all tee times during the first two rounds. Also they seem to try to put certain players together, for example former US Open winners, winners of last 2 or 3 majors, upcoming stars, etc. The last 2 days, after the cut, are obvious … the players currently in first and second place tee off last, #3 and #4 tee off next to last, and so on.

Not sure either, but believe the pairings are picked, and the tee times for Thursday and Friday are random. No question that time of day tee off makes a difference, usually the early times have slower greens that hold better, etc... before the afternoon sun dries them out. This is especially true for US Open venues as they require the greens to be fast.

Part of the reason why the flip the tee times between thurs and fri. If you tee off in the afternoon fri you usually get a morning tee time thurs or vice versa

They sure didn't spend much money on grass seed. They won't have to worry about fertilizing and mowing either.;)

They are done manually by USGA officials.

I keep hearing that this course, Chambers Bay, is a mess. Looks like it on TV. Burnt fairways and greens. Looks like the British Open and not a US Open.

They wanted a course that was along the lines of the British courses; challenging.
Not one of those 21 under par tourneys where it was like putting in ya living room!

That grass and all the colors made it look great as far as I thought,

Fowler and Tiger: they are looking great ! 1st round at one point on the front 9 combined 19 over par!

Actually the course was DESIGNED to look like that. Those are the natural colors of the grass. Its not burned out or anything.

And remember, last year when the US Open was at Pinehurst, the fairways and greens were drier than in the past and the rough was really dry … again, it was by design, trying to bring Pinehurst back to what it was like back when Ross designed it. I think we're about to start seeing more American courses go that route to save on water.

Good to have tougher links style courses that brings the game back to its roots - much more interesting golf.

Unfortunately, poa annua grass has infiltrated many of the natural fescue greens. The poa can cause balls to bounce/deflect and not roll true. This leads to inconsistent putting.

PS Rose stated that 40% of the greens are f'd up. Sergio was the first to be honest about it now others are following suits..... the greens for an open should not be this bad imo....

Is it true that Chambers Bay is built on top of a old stone quarry?

Yes. With a lot of sand left over. R T Jones Jr said it was like building a golf course in a sand box. He could just move the sand around until he got everything set up the way he wanted.
