One Last Political Comparison Before Memorial Day Weekend

What are our security needs?
The reason no one can challenge our military is because we have not stopped and allowed anybody to build up to challenge our military the object of staying one step ahead is necessary

But personally I believe you enjoy playing The Devil's Advocate and do not believe the stuff you're posting.
Is that JAG training?
Now if you want to speak of wasteful spending you need to look no further than the entitlements going out to the lazy of this country, and the continuous failed Democratic policies embedded in the big cities which have created more poor than helps uplift the needy

Okay, at least you agree that no one can challenge us. I submit that we could cut spending even further (in particular all of those redundant stateside bases), and it would still be the case that no one could challenge us.

Have to go now for the rest of the day, so thanks for the discussion.

When you check back later agree good conversation
Paper pusher comment was uncalled for my bad.
Yes there is wasteful spending in the military.
Enjoy the rest of your day

"I answered your question about why it's so important to spend (and use) our military appropriately, which means shifting funds away from entitlements and towards R&D and productive public service/labor."

A totally different debate. What makes you think we need to spend $$$ on either one? Perhaps we are wasting taxpayer dollars on both the military and entitlements?

We likely are, to a certain extent. It's the government....so we can be certain that money is being wasted in any activity in which they're involved.

But my points about why we need effective military stand, and you have yet to even try to challenge them....beyond you're weak attempt to ignore them as "generalities".

So again, please let me know, please explain why the goals/objectives I laid out aren't worth of the spending we're doing now (or suggesting doing in the future) and what you're basing that analysis on.

Well, at least someone is willing to offer some specific scenarios.

Radical Islam is not a country. It is a variety of terrorist organizations that don't require a large conventional infrastructure to respond to them. Do we really need over 200 stateside military bases to combat radical Islam? We obviously need a few for rapid response forces, but the level of redundancy is absurd.

You also mention a land war on the Korean peninsula. This is no longer 1950, when South Korea was actually smaller in population than North Korea. It is now three times larger, and is perfectly capable of defending itself in any conventional land war. In any case, the US force there is only about 30,000 and serves mainly as a tripwire deterrent. The massive U.S. military spending we still see today is not due to the North Korean threat.

So, still waiting for someone to explain where the threats exist in the modern world. As someone who lectured at Yongshan University in China on security studies, I met many Chinese military analysts, and every one of them was befuddled at how the US could see China as a threat in any meaningful sense, given the massive asymmetry between US and Chinese military power. The same thing with Russia, which used to be an enormous military power with a population of over 300 million plus satellite countries of another 100 million, and is now just a shriveled shell of its former self, with a population smaller than Bangladesh and military strength largely dependent on its aging nuclear capability.

There has to be a better argument for why U.S. per capita military spending is actually higher today than it was at the end of the Cold War? But I have yet to hear it.

I never said that Radical Islam was a country but Iran is a country and is helping spread Radical Islam throughout the world. I guess you believe , or some "Experts " tell you that Iran is no threat ?

I don't know what Chinese Military experts that you spoke too but China is a nuclear power now, and I can tell You from personal experience, being out number about 10 to one and seeing a seeming endless supply of Chinese soldiers attacking you , and having your company, regiment , and division fight to the last man to defeat them will disprove the views of your Chinese military experts. That was against a not too well armed Chinese soldier with no Air Force to support them.

Modern day China also has air power and can still throw an "Endless " supply of human wave man power at you with a lot better equipped army than they had in the 1950's. And in the 1950's we controlled the Air and our air power Inflicted a large number of casualties on the Chinese ground forces.

As far as North Korea goes, I don't care how big South Korea's army may be, if we have to go in
And fight in the mountains of North Korea to take out North Korea's army and remove their Nuclear
Weapons and rockets, it will be a very bloody war ! South Korea will suffer great damage to their cities
And civilian population. South Korea will need all the help that we can give them, and we will be very
Heavily engaged in the fighting just as we were in the 1950's.
I also know the terrain and weather conditions in both North and South Korea from Pusan to the Chosin
Reservoir and it is a very tough and difficult place to fight a war. It is brutal !
If you don't think North Korea and Iran are enough of a threat for you, not to mention China and Russia
Flexing their muscles in the China Sea and Russia in Syria and the Ukraine, you and I are certainly looking at the World from an entirely different perspective.

That was a very strong post

That was a very strong post

Poet,
Compared to people who study theory and speak to experts, what do a couple of grunts like us who actually carried a rifle, like we did , know about wars compared to those guys ?
However, one thing we do know is that we never want to see our troops every sent into combat under armed and undermanned!
We also never want to see another war ! If that is at all possible ?
Peace through Strength ! That is the only answer ! Our military and homeland security can never be too strong !
Semper Fi, Brother !
