but Kelly keeps hiring from guys who were his ass kissers in the past. New ideas are needed; a fresh approach.
Sounds like Brian Kelly's problem, then, is his inability to identify and hire good assistants.
Defense only allowed 3 points. They did ok in my book. This loss has Kelly written all over it. Passing, passing, and more passing with the results the same. Going for 1st down on 4th and 12 when the kicker just made a field goal from the same distance the previous series. Finally gets yardage by using the run game, then decided to pass the ball in the redzone. What the hell is wrong with this guy? If this was his 1st offence, I would probably understand. But he pulls this crap all the time expecting a different result. So infuriating
HELL no. He's an unmitigated ass clown. Last thing I want is a coach who has been called out as a racist by his players. I don't care if it is true or not, negative recruiting is bad enough already. Can you imagine "Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention his lack of success in his last two jobs, and that he is a cracker."
Too much like Weis and Kelly for my tastes.
Need some one who is more of a smash mouth type of guy. Someone who understands the running game and the importance of defense.
Don't forget how excited EVERYONE was when we hired Kelly in the first place.And he's the only coach since Holtz to get a shot at a National Championship. I'm as surprised as anyone at how bad we are this year but changing coaches seems like we're going to back to the Davie/Willingham/Weis years.
Being the best coach since Holtz isn't exactly high praise.
Not everyone. I wasn't. Saw one ,just one, Cinn game during Kelly's undefeated regular season there ... and didn't like what I saw. Was disappointed when ND offered him the job.
I say you throw 15 mill per year at Meyer. See what happens. If he comes great! If he doesn't than you know ND has a bigger problem than coaching and we need to go to the Ivy League.
Sure assistants are a big problem for Kelly but there are a lot more concerns as well. His offenses turn over the ball at an alarming rate which has plagued his team almost every year minus the Title game year. Kelly is a pass-happy coach who abandons the run too early.
Heistand's inability to coach an OL that can consistently dominate the LOS only feeds fuel on the fire for Kelly pass-happy ways. The few times we do establish a running, Kelly usually sticks with it but those games are few and far between.
I do agree that if you fire Kelly I really am clueless as to what proven coach ND could get it really is slim pickings out there in the head coach field. However, I have lost all faith that Kelly can right the ship in the future so I wouldn't be upset to see him sent packing. I don't know a single great head coach that had a season this horrific this late in an era and was able to bounce back and win big.
Guys no coach with a name wants to come here. Coaches like Herman, or Peterson becuase at their respected school 9-3 or 8-4 seasons are ok. Here that will get you canned becuase the fans will revolt. Kelly has been giving us that for the most part and look at how we are acting.
From 04 to 05 Joe Paterno went from 4-7 to 11-1, good enough for 3Rd overall in the polls. Only 2 seconds from going unbeaten.
Of course ND is not getting Joe Paterno.
I agree coaches may be hesitant to come here, but that is because of the restrictions, both academic and social. Not the 8 or 9 or even 7 wins. The reason most of us want 8 & 4 to go isn't his record, he's a terrible coach. Period! His teams are not well prepared at all. It's been that way since he came here, since his first game. Gimmick coaches don't make it at this level. Especially at a northern school with weather concerns. It's a shame it's taken over 5 years for everyone to see this. Time to move on. Probably after next season sadly.
It is not just this season that is the problem, Kelly has had 2 good seasons in 7. In those other years we kept hear every excuse in the book. Kelly will never hire good assistance for one simple reason... he has no vision of what he wants his team to be on either side of the ball.
As I've pointed out many times here, the vast majority of ND coaches have never made it past 5 years. The only ones that have, have been incredibly successful and have won a NC. Kelly is by far the least successful coach in ND history to coach more than 5 years. Its time to move on

Paterno had tons of goodwill in the bank with some Nattys....BK? Not so much.
They are winning 8 and 9 games at schools that used to win 3 or 4 games. These guys are at schools that cannot recruit nearly as well as ND.
A really good coach could win 10 or 11 games every year at ND. I still don't think ND will ever win a NC given our restrictions but they can certainly win 10 games most years

Don't throw me into the EVERYONE category. I never liked this overrated coach to begin with. I said from day one that he isn't a big boy coach.
Winning at nc at grand valley st and one good year at Cinn doesn't cut it.

I don't know, chances are good ND will hire another loser. But I've had enough, I want that a**hole$ face off our sidelines.
The policies at ND will be limiting but even with those limitations ND should be a good but not great program in the mold of Stanford, MSU and Wisconsin. At present ND football is awful. It means bringing in a coach who will instill a more blue collar approach to football at ND and less of the schematic advantage philosophy. Perhaps s new HC would even consider it possible to bring the qb under center inside the 10 yrd line with a 2 TE set with 2 backs in the backfield and run off tackle . Rather than the persistently brilliant play call of running out of the shot gun formation with a spread offense and empty backfield or 1 back at the goal line. Current Coach's preference being to run his favorite outside read run option or sweep . Has worked tremendously well in the red zone over past 7 yrs.
