Notre Dame went from 97.3 rushing yards per game in the first six games to 207.7 yards in the final six games. Going into its bye week, at 5-1 the offense was averaging a mediocre 27.5 points, 367.8 yards and 5.2 yards per play.

After the bye week, the Irish offense averaged 37.2 offensive points per game. Add defensive score this jumps to 39.5, 461.3 yards per game and 7.1 yards per play over the final six games of the season. If the Irish offense averaged this over the season, it would rank 15th in points. But would jump to 7th if you took the team number. 16th in yards per game and 3rd in yards per play. The all time Irish record on yards per play is 7.

The first half of the season the Irish ran the same OL centric offense with little attacking the perimeter in the run game or middle in the pass. After the bye, Coan completed 73.7% of his passes averaging an impressive 9.2 yards per attempt and jacking up his passer rating to 168.19. Those numbers, for the entire season, would rank 3rd, 9th and 7th nationally.

Yes, the defenses the Irish played in the second were not of the caliber the Irish played in the first half. But what gives me hope. Is the offense didn't run the same scheme/plays attack it did in the first. The scheme and way the offense attacked defenses changed. Same players different X's and O's. Pass to set up the run and attacking the ENTIRE field in the pass game. Utilizing the middle, employing crossing patterns, check downs, quick passing.

Rees' tweeks to build around the pass and how he attacked defenses opened up room for what was a disappointment of a ground attack (to be kind) in the first half of the schedule. The Irish ground attack went from 97.3 rushing yards per game to 207.7 yards in the final six games. A difference of 110.4 yards per game.

This I believe portends will for the future. Rees is also showing himself to be good and tireless recruiter. Hopefully a competition develops between the O & D staff in recruiting and it builds off of each other.

A big test against a strong Pokes defense. Which is comparable to Wisconsin and Cincinnati.
