ND v Duke

Brey has to tell Vasturia no more shots. Beacheem and Colson are the hot hands tonight.

ND isn't talented enough to be missing all these free throws.

It's frustrating that ND doesn't care more about winning in Football and Men's Basketball.

You'd think after back to back Elite 8s that ND would have more top recruits wanting to play for them.

We dont have a talented big down low other than Bonzie and we have a limited bench. Only 1 small forward coming in next year. It looks like Breys best days are behind him. We just can't keep playing the same guys 90 percent of the game and expect to beat the talent rich teams.

Not really knocking down the door - hard to believe it's year 17 of Brey......wish he could land some athletic bigs.

Remember the days when road teams hated to play at ND, because ND was so tough at home ?

You guys panic too much ... this is a tournament team ... expect we will drop the next one at UNC then win 5 or 6 of the next 7 ... we have favorable schedule to end the season and will see what kind of team we have heading into post season ... just enjoy the ride this team has hard workers and sound fundamentals ... ACC has no easy outs

Favorable schedule eh ? Like Georgia Tech favorable ?
I'm not basketball savvy, but it seems to me like Brey isn't a top notch X's and O's, strategy, make in game adjustments guy. He is a calm, cool, charismatic, forgiving, cheerleader type of coach, which is great, but the team needs the other part too.

Like when does ND ever mix up their defensive scheme/strategy to try and throw the other team off balance? Like pressure off, then pressure on etc

How did Brad Stevens have so much success when he was at Butler ? He led them to back to back NCAA Championship games. I don't recall Butler having the type of talent that Kentucy, Duke, or Kansas had.

The Fight was short lived. Maybe Buguit is right, Brey lets the players coach the team.

Players do whatever they want ... ND pulled to within one ... next possession Colson is chucking it up from 3 ft past the top of the key .... there is no direction to work for good shots ... ever

This officiating crew is horrible. Worst I've seen this season

Officials called 4 phantom fouls in a row down the stretch to try and keep them in it ... not to mention not giving Duke player a TO when on the floor and let it go to poss arrow ND ... should've lost by 20

Bingo !

Vasturia shouldn't be allowed to shoot the rest of the game. He is Mr. Brick!

Vasturia is a great shooter ... he just isn't athletic enough to get open looks on his own against superior athleticism .... he is left alone without any solid gameplan and call to work for high% shots .... the plan becomes .... not open .... shoot it from 30 ft .... still not open ... shoot it from 35 ft .... still not open .... shoot it from 40 ft. ..... still not open .... shoot it from 45 ft.

Some of the shots Farrell makes are from 40 .... he just chucks it up ... he is a great shooter too ... we will never see what these guys would look like in an offense committed to making teams play D while they work for good shots

It certainly seems like they do whatever they want, which can work when they are playing teams with less athleticism and talent than them. But when they are playing teams like Duke they can't afford to have careless possessions, especially if they can't get offensive rebounds for second and third chances. Why doesn't Brey experiment with Burns and Mooney? They must have more athleticism and rebounding prowess than Geben.

Also, does ND not have a defensive minded coach on their staff?
When their offence is struggling they need to be able to frustrate and get the other team to cough the ball up. You can change the tempo of a game not just with your offence but with your defence. Brey doesn't seem to understand this. All he says is " I need a Kill! I need a Kill".

Why don't they cycle through different types of defensive schemes when the other team starts to get offensive momentum ? You've got full court and half court press, traps?, man to man, 2-3, 3-2 zones etc. It just seems like they do the same thing over and over and are too predictable.

Tournament teams play defense and rebound. IF this team makes the tourny it will be one and done. Maybe the NIT.

The teams that advance in the tournament do those things, that and take the other team out of their comfort zones.

Brey is too nice a guy to demand they play D .... best way to demand D and rebounding is to control playing time .... he won't do it .... in game coaching ? .... he won't do it

"Give me a kill!" ... this is as complex as it gets .... ask yourself what qualifications you need to take coaching to this level .... switching D's is designed to upset flow of opponents offensive rhythm .... and ultimately ... get stops .... Brey has no clue

Brey tried playing man D for a whole season back in 2003 ... said he was going to develop a defensive mentality this way .... we ended up playing Arizona in NCAA tourny .... a top 5 team .... we had Troy Murphy ... we were down over 20 and giving up layups and dunks ... never switched

Man, one little rough patch and you guys are ready to throw Brey overboard. Give me a break. The Irish will regroup in time for the ACC tournament, make the NCAA tournament and hopefully make a nice run there.

I'm not wanting to throw him overboard, but he definitely lacks certain valuable traits that doesn't seem like it's being filled by any of the assistant coaches.

Brey doesn't have the talent to win it all. I think he does a good job with what he has. What valuable traits does he lack that would get this team a national title? I bet if he had Duke's talent or Kentucky's talent or Kansas' talent, he would win a title. He can't get those players. His last two teams have made the Elite Eight. That's pretty good for Notre Dame basketball.

I understand he doesn't have the talent that the traditional basketball factory powers do. I also understand that this team has lost a lot of athleticism the past 2 seasons: Grant, Connaughton, Auguste, and Jackson. The back to back Elite 8s were amazing, but it hasn't lead to much recruiting success other than DJ Harvey. So that's not capitalizing on the success.

When you've lost that much athleticism and talent, you need to adjust if you want to be able to eek out wins against more talented and athletic teams. He can't be letting the players do whatever they want whenever they want if they want to win. If they're going to win against these top teams it is going to have to be ugly. It's not going to be some carefree, run and gun, pickup game style of win.

Maybe they have to go back to the burn offence against top teams, although it might not be as effective now because I think the shot clock has been reduced. Regardless, they need to be more unpredictable and disruptive on the defensive side; they need to try and mix different schemes within the same game. Brey doesn't seem to do this.

Guys...you do know that Duke gives scholarships to basketball players...some of them are really good basketball players. I didn't see the game...but maybe Duke is just better than ND is....I staed before...for ND to win they have to have at least 3 guys making shots...from reading this thread it sounds like there were only 2....seems like Vasturia is struggling....how many of the shots he missed were considered "good looks." It seems when he is on ND plays alot better....

The offensive flow wasn't good. Think he was 1 for 9.

The problem is that the ACC has figured out ND has no inside game outside of Colson. They don't have to pack in their defense and have moved out closer to the 3 point line which makes our shooters have to shoot 2 or 3 feet further out and you saw Vasturia and Farrell come up short repeatedly on their 3s. Also they know they can overplay the ball handler since there's no threat of passing to a big man down low. We miss Auguste more than I expected we would. I know Brey said after the game that he was kicking around using Mooney more and at this point, he has to be a bigger threat than Geben or Torres.

Duke very well might be better than ND but we've beaten them 5 out of 6 before last night, so the gap certainly isn't huge. One problem is we're giving up too many offensive rebounds from bricks thrown up while playing decent defense. Not much u can do about that. But the biggest problem is vasturia & Farrell were playing like the best guard tandem in the country two weeks ago, and now they're playing like the worst. Can't figure it out. We're missing a boatload of FTs after leading the country in FT%. Ryan isn't getting enough minutes to get his shot back. I think he should start playing mooney too. Don't revert back to not playing the bench, play more of it so we're fresh down the stretch late in games and as the season moves along.

So why don't you explain to all us blind, dumb, and clueless people what this offense would look like??? It couldn't possibly be that Duke did a better job defensively could it....it always has to be what Brey did or didn't do.....if ND did have a different offense you would say the assistants put the offense in.....So Brey is f...ed no matter what. Why don't you tell all of the people on the dumbest board in all of sports how much ND would have won by had you coached the game last nite....but you won't you'll just backpedal....btw...i did just watch the game and I don't ever recall Farrell taking a shot from 40 ft...you are an ass

ND needs Ryan's shot...but imo, from what I have seen of him I was not overly impressed with his defense. I wouldn't be really confident in him being able to lock anybody down...at least not with Duke's talent...who does he guard?
