ND IS A TOP LEVEL JOB

ND is a high risk job for coaches to take and the reward will only be great if you win an NC.

Here are the big challenges:
Recruiting is harder.
* No greyshirts
* No JUCOs
* It is in S. Bend
* The admissions office has a real say
Living up to expectations is harder.
* Lots of echoes (and forums) to contend with!
You get paid less than other top 20 jobs
The athletes have to go to class and do their best to be real students
More travel than most other programs (playing and recruiting)
I believe you get everyone's best shot because of the name brand

But if you can win one, you'll be a legend in South Bend!

Someone will rise to the challenge. Hopefully soon...

Neither Saban nor Meyer need the experience of winning big time at a big time program....been there, done that. Chris Peterson would be in a position to put Notre Dame back in elite company. Notre Dame has done a poor job of hiring head coaches....as other programs have done. Bama, USC, Ohio St., Michigan, you name it. But those programs had a lower tolerance level for failure. Notre Dame has tolerated much more than the norm. It goes with the identity. The number of .500+ coaches over the past twenty years at Notre Dame is eye-opening. While BK is a bit better...he isn't the answer to the problem of mediocrity at Notre Dame.

South Bend? Have you been to Clemson? Its a cow pasture.

No.

Meyer quit UF under very strange circumstances and was working at ESPN for a year before taking the OSU job. Saban went to coach the Miami Dolphins and was a huge failure and was fired then took the Bama job.

Yeah, it's not like "Corch Irvin Maiyur" voluntarily left UF to go to Ohio State. Ostensibly he had "health issues" which led him to quit Florida. But really the dude had a complete psychotic breakdown and was an emotional wreck. It was apparently a combination of covering up for an "alleged" now convicted murderer who "allegedly" shot people in Gainesville but who mysteriously walked back their testimony after getting shot but not killed PLUS there was an open player revolt for some reason. Urban Meyer let the players run wild and UF led the nation in arrests for quite a few years under his watch. Even the "Corch" himself says that he learned from the mess he left in Hogtown and actually tried to instill a disciplinary process in Ohio.

But regardless a combination of lack discipline, loose character players running amok unchecked, losing Timmeh Teabag to graduation and some poor recruiting classes and player misses led the Corch to mentally break and his anxiety was affecting his physical health.

The same idiots talked that way about Bama before Saban and Mich before Khaki pants. Fire Kelly and bring in the right coach and ND will be great again.
That's what they said about Bob Davie. Didn't happen.
That's what they said about Ty Willingham. Didn't happen.
That's what they said about Charlie Weis. Didn't happen.
That's what they said about Brian Kelly. Hasn't happen yet. But everyone wants to get rid of him. Okay have it your way.

I've been to both and vastly prefer Clemson. I'd much rather enjoy the weather and being 2 hours from Charlotte, 1.5 hours from Asheville (craft beer capital East of the Mississippi), 2.5 hours from Atlanta and 3 hours from Charleston plus only an hour from some of the best mountain and waterfall hiking or hunting trails east of the Mississippi versus being 1.75 hours from Chicago and 3.5 hours from Detroit.

Not anymore. This job may have the most pressure of any in sports.
Last 3 coaches have been canned. Maybe pressure got to them. Kelly it looks like is now coming across as if the pressure is getting to him.
Try the last 5 coaches where canned. Holtz and Faust did not walk away from the job like Devine or Ara,

This is tangential to the point I was actually coming on to make as I was listening to XM college sports station talk about your possibly open position and they pointed out it can't be a truly top tier job based upon the number of misses you've had on top tier coaches with Corch Irvin Maiyur being the textbook example as you whiffed twice. The question is when was the last time you actually got your top candidate? It's been awhile as there were clearly others you wanted more for the last four or so jobs. MAYBE Bob Davie?

No one IMO wanted Davie. He had no head coaching experience and the jackass Mike Wadsworth wanted so bad to get rid of Coach Holtz. Willingham was a wolf in sheep's clothing when he got to ND. Weis was simply a hot mess who had no business being a head coach of a girls prouder puff team. If you asked all these Irish fans calling for Kelly's job and they where honest about it, they all (including me) want Kelly bad 7 years ago.

So with your feedback I went back to 2009 just to see who was the #1 target. But it looks like it was "Corch Irvin Maiyur" for the second time, Jim Harbaugh, Chris Petersen, and George Patterson as the early optimal targets with Bob Stoops, Paul Johnson, Kirk Ferentz and Brian Kelly in the second tier of what ND wanted at least per BSPiN in articles early in your search. So whomever was searching DID have a good eye for coaches as all of those top tier whiffs are at the top of the coaching game now while the second tier is more "meh".
