I have come to really realize that I, as a 60 year old alum, are way to physically, materially and emotionally invested in ND football. After suffering through last nights game, I’ve decided that that has to stop. It is clearer and clearer each passing day that this administration is more interested in the almighty dollar than it’s so called striving for excellence. Case in point is the face value of my game tickets went from $175 per last year to $300 per this year. For what? To support another embarrassing season. ND will never be really relevant again until that focus changes, until excellence is again the goal. So it’s simply, my little, individual protest starts today

I will no longer attend games either individually or my annual one game with my family
I will not purchase any merchandise related to ND
I will no longer alter any schedule to watch ND football games
I have cancelled both my tickets and my subscription of 30+ years to BGI

ND needs to play in half empty stadiums with crappy TV rating, with an seriously interrupted money flow before they will ever really compete again. For me a cleaning of the house from the top to the coach also needs to happen. Jenkins, Jack and Kelly all need to be replaced.

I now do believe that we are actually irrelevant. The landscape has changed and we took our eye off the ball, the result is 20+ years and counting of pure mediocrity.

“Welcome back to the Fight! This time I think our side is going to win!”

100% agree with you! Long, long ago, ND football used to be special. Your right, ND football is irrelevant now. Schools like Bama and even OSU also have a rich past. The have their own coaching legends and winning legacy. Both of these schools also went through some dry and empty to average seasons. However, they went out and brought in coaches they knew could restore them to past glories. When they hired a Coach they knew could not deliver and restore them back to relevance, they didn't keep them around for eight years. They cut ties and moved on.

I will continue to attend the home games and watch on TV. I have the ability to differentiate between life's real anguish and disappointments and one that's sports related. My life doesn't hang in the balance with every play, every game. I'm not too pleased with BK, the staff, and yes, even the players, but, there is nothing I can do about any of it. Everyone should do what they have to do. There is no right or wrong answer as fans with little to no power.

The drama on here is thick today. Notre Dame is more than a football program so I'll continue to wear my ND gear and maybe occasionally buy the shirt that I think looks good. I get amazed at how much people invest in a football program of 18-22 year-old young men who get the opportunity to play and study at a great institution.

Sports games, while still a great escape, are far from a critical part of my enjoyment the day after a game. Now on to a bowl game that would be nice to win and a men's and women's basketball season that should be fun to watch.

Arrogance arrogance arrogance.

Look at how many championships we won has fallen on deaf ear.

Nobody cares about that anymore. NBC promotes ND like the holy grail still because thats their baby....but nobody is buying what they're selling any longer.

At some point you actually have to get results.

As an alum it is hard for you to see the real problem here. I understand the standards, the morals, the ethics and the grad rates. When you sell a 40 year plan you are going to get the kinds of recruits who want exactly that. When you're at Alabama, Auburn, Louisville, FSU etc etc you get guys who only want to play football and go to the NFL. In five years they'll have a job with their name on their shirt. This is a racial comment from a social psychologist tho it is not racist. Look at the OK situation. The all-star QB makes crude and offensive gestures at the opposing team. His penalty--sit out the first series and loses his captaincy for that game. You end up with a football team appropriate to the guys you recruit. Dru Tranquill may not be back next year because he's getting married, has an engineering degree and wonderful career opportunities. How many guys from the football factories can say that? It's really not hard to figure out if you allow yourself to delve into the inner workings of ND and their refusal to compromise. You just cannot have both in the current world of football.

While I can appreciate and agree with some of what you’ve written, that still doesn’t explain how we can go 2 - 7 against Stanford ( over the last 9 ). They to sell the 40 year plan. In fact some say more so than ND. ND use to regularly beat Stanford. The “there a football factory and we are not” argument doesn’t really explain ND 20+ years of mediocrity. ND claims to always be in pursuit of national championships, the pursuit of excellence in all facets. This is clearly not true.

To retain or not to retain?
The question seems to be whether or not after 8 full seasons this question can be answered.
What are the aspirations for the football team?

What about Clemson and Stanford? Duke basketball? It comes down to coaching.

I'm fine with all the high standards and stuff. ND needs to be up front with everyone. Kelly should say the goal is to have a good team that graduates all its players and they become productive citizens. Nothing wrong with that. Then slowly but surely seats will be empty and no one will care. But at least that's honest. You'd should expect honesty from a catholic school. Don't you think?

i applaud you sir. you have exercised your option as a fan. some would rather cry the same old sad song when nd loses a game as if the world is coming to an end. we are all fans and pretty much only have two options. be one or not be one. again, I applaud you for taking a stand.

Oh ND is still relevant to many in this nation. The stadium was quite red vs. Georgia. Commonly heard " bucket list "

I join in this protest and vow as follows:

1. I will no longer attend any games. Given that I haven't been to a game since '84, this isn't much of a sacrifice but it is making a very strong statement nonetheless. I reserve the right to retract this vow to the extent that someone gives me a ticket or if I just change my mind.

2. I will not purchase any merchandise related to ND although I will still welcome gifts from friends and family. In such event, I will never be seen in a photo with both ND merchandise and a smile on my face.

3. I will no longer alter my schedule to watch ND games. Of course, I have been recording them for years so, again, this might not be much of a sacrifice but it is a bold and strong statement nonetheless.

4. I cancelled my subscription to BGI. Alright, if truth be told, I actually cancelled it 20+ years ago when I found out I could get my "ND info fix" from the internet and that I have a life.

5. I vow to no longer donate money to my alma mater - Notre Dame. Yes, I know that in the 33 years since I've graduated that I have yet to donate any money to ND but now I won't consider doing so in the future. So there, Jack Swarbrick!

I further vow to actually try and have a life and recognize that football, whether ND or any other team, is merely a diversion and, like the lottery, intended for entertainment purposes only. When I stop enjoying ND football (which is usually after the 2nd or 3rd loss), I stop watching and move on to other forms of entertainment that bring me more joy.

There I have made my solemn vows to all of you on this Board. Should I waver with any of these vows, I trust that you will call me on it. Thank you in advance for your support.

Spot on. I stopped attending ND games at home two seasons ago. Can't take the inept football. They've showed flashes of good football under BK at times.

He has recruited well. It's amazing how many ND guys have gone on to the NFL and do so well. Yet while at ND w NFL talent ND has been so inept at times.

And when you see Stanford over achieve and put up double digit 10 win or better seasons year after year - it is even more troubling.

Stanford entrance requirements are tougher than ND.

If I was a BOT I'd be asking Jenkins and Sawbrick the simple question of -

If Stanford can have such a successful football program - why can't we here at ND ?

It is quite frankly embarrassing that Stanford kicks our ass almost every season.

Like you - I stopped buying ND gear along time ago.

I did attend the most recent Stanford / ND game since It was a road game. Made me sick to my stomach being at that game and watching Stanford out tough and out coach ND yet again.

ND needs to fire Sawbrick and maybe Jenskins as well. They need new leadership.

Or, at the minimum they need a new football coach.

Who do you propose ND name HC?

Who do you propose ND name HC?

That is Sawbrick job. If he can't find a competent head football coach he needs to be fired a long w BK.

BK except for 2 seasons has done well. This season is a wash / faded too bad down the stretch here. The loss to one of Stanford's weaker teams in years is inexcusable - especially when you factor in the potential a win would of landed ND into a prestigious Jan 1 bowl game - we got out played and out coached.

BK has had 5 underachieving seasons as a coach at ND of his 8 seasons.

As the AD it is his job to find a new coach.

BK is not the answer.

Charlie and BK have both shown you can recruit high caliber kids to ND - a coach will surface and take this job - a coach can see what Stanford has done w tougher restrictions and also see first hand it is doable at ND.

Prior to Charlie - people started to say a quality coach would not take the ND job due to It being a place they no longer could recruit quality players.

Look at how well ND players are
Doing in the NFL and how many their are.

ND can get a quality head coach - Sawbrick needs to do his job.

A quality head football coach will take this ND job.

I felt this way last year. Didn't watch 3 or 4 of the games. I PREDICTED ND WOULD BE 9- 3 THIS YEAR.
I figured they would lose to SC and then lose 2 of the last 4 because that was a tough stretch of games. Yet here I am, right all along but just disappointed to be right. How does this happen? It's like I'm an addict or something. It should be easy to go I was right and move on. Yet somehow my perception of reality got all twisted.

Sorry, that doesn't cut it. Either name names or STFU.

Nice language ND grad - really - your an ND grad ? You teach your kids to use language like that as well ?

I stated I'm done here - this is my last post.

But I think it's fair to say - I'm not the AD aof ND football. I think it's fair to say the ND AD is paid a lot of $$ to have a competent head football coach at ND.

I think it a fair to say BK is not a competent head football coach for ND. Maybe at a lesser program - but not at ND.

Lastly, I think it's more than fair to say that the ND AD needs to hire a new football coach and that based on the reasons I stated in my earlier post that a competent head coach will take this ND job.

I'm sorry your so upset at my response.

Damn, you really are a douchebag... it’s a message board where opinions are stated. It’s not up to the fan base to find the coach, that’s what an AD is for. What is your problem?

Oh, get over yourself. If you don't like what I post, put me on ignore. I really don't care.

But in response to the gist of your post, yeah, you've got to name names. It's not enough to say that "anyone" could coach ND. Whatever your feelings are or are not about Kelly, we could do worse. And we have, in the past, done worse. So when you don't put a name out there, I know you are just a complainer with no suggestions of your own.

Like much of your posts. (One liners) For the most part. Have you ever posted and had anything of value to add? Perhaps we could get a coach candidate from you?

Your slick jabs are as old as Kelly's coaching. Outdated, obsolete, frankly not much fun to look at.
