Michael Mayer gets drafted by who?

I follow and watch two football teams every week, Notre Dame and the Raiders. The Raiders have been hard to watch for several years now, and that will remain the case until they dramatically improve their defense. That said, barring injury, I think Mayer will thrive in this offense; and his blocking will help improve an already very potent running game. And I get to continue watching, enjoying and cheering Mayer‘s play every week. Lucky me!

The Mayer critics are remindful of all the bad moves by NFL GMs for years & years & years. Wrong at least half the time (& that’s being very generous) & the board nay sayers regurgitate the same bullshit that the Mel kipers say about Mayer. Dude was a stud at ND but he runs a 4.7 and all of the sudden he’s stiff & isn’t worthy of the first round. Lol. What a bunch of group think geeks some of you are.
I will say, Mayer is a truly awesome TE. I don't know where he ought to have been drafted or not, but as far as pass-catching TEs go, getting open and making spectacular catches on a regular basis and just being everything you could reasonably want out of that position....

MM is definitely that....

I think Mayer will be good. I was hoping my Lions would take him. They made a hell of a pick last year at DE. Was hoping they’d get him. They have a great OC. Bummer.

21-years-old, and drafted early in round 2 by the Las Vegas Raiders.

Life for MM is pretty damn good.

You bet. I was hoping he’d go 1st round. He is better than they drafted him. it’s okay to think that. Even our all pro tight ends think he’s the best one. Hamilton embarrassed the doubters last year. He was a top 5 talent.

Nailed it. Board basement geniuses Nasty and Golson giving us their poor man’s Kiper/McShay analysis on every post is downright brutal.
Golson5 and Nasty aren’t even that good. Sometimes I wonder if those two even know they are watching football or the Bachelorette?

pathetic. Jaylon Smith was the ultimate example; and you just blow it off. But as has been pointed out, its is not YOUR future so you can spout all you want.
And you promote selfishness and "gimme that it's mine" thinking? Good to know.

Jaylon was a freak incident but that ship got in choppy waters before that injury. He NEVER should've moved to the inside. Plenty athletic enough for college to get away with it but not in Sunday. He got manhandled on Sunday and not because what happened in the ****ing bowl against OSU.

Look man..
I don't care if a player wishes to forgo a whole year and enter the draft early...yeah I get it. You can come back and get said degree...all that.

But...

When you commit to playing a season then play the damn season to completion.
There are TEAMMATES that could be helped by your presence like others have helped you along your way.

If you commit to a season it shouldn't be conditional. Thus...why play to begin with

It's not your future, why should you care.

Michael Mayer made the decision he should have made when you are staring at life changing money in 6 months.

Hence why you probably won't ever run an NFL team. Just razzing you.

Double M is a great player but it's not always about just talent.
It's about prioritized need by said drafting team.

Team "A" needs a right guard and a tight end. Their tight end caught 4 TD last year but could've been better.
Their right guard play killed them hurting the run and pass game.

Just one of those years brotha...

MM will be fine.

Except he landed on the Raiders where nobody seems to do great anymore 🤷‍♂️

Then why play the junior season at all?

He could've worked out all year and still got drafted somewhere, no

Hypocrisy thy name is 88ND. You spout of about loyalty of the players to the team but seem to think its ONE WAY. all too often it is not two ways.
And ONCE AGAIN ITS NOT YOUR FUTURE so stop acting holier than thou.

And Jaylon smith is FAR from a freak example of getting injured in a bowl game and it affecting their NFL value.

So frankly stick your sanctimonious crap up your arse.

That's all you got?

Then you've got nothing just more selfish childish non commital bullshit.
GIMME THAT IT'S MINE

and btw...

Please list all the NON freak examples of a player that damaged their career from playing in a bowl game.

Just want to clarify...
if ND makes the playoff last year should Mayer have played?

Jaylon wouldve been all pro if he didnt get injured

What's got you being a Raiders fan? I grew up routing for Elway and the Raiders always gave him problems. Being here on the east coast I didn't get to see very much of him or Timmy Brown since we had like 3 -5 channels to chose from.

Stop.

When you understand how to play inside backer properly you'll understand he never should've left his original position of outside linebacker.
What you can't grasp is Jaylon's inside backer deficiency wasn't from losing any step.
In college a player can just out athlete the opposition in lieu of technique.

Can't get away with that on Sunday. You have to be a cement head to play inside backer properly. It's the fullback of the defense. Headaches aren't optional.

That was NEVER Jaylon's thing. He was an incredible talent. Quicket first three steps I've ever seen but he wouldn't take on the lead blocker at the point of attack. He waited and tried catching the lead blocker 3 yards down field.
It's exactly how Marist plays inside backer and thank god they started moving him around to do different things because he sucks as an inside backer. He doesn't like banging heads either.

If you have not figured out that Big Time College football is now a business you are even dumber than I thought which is hard to believe.

The young men like MM are looking at their future; knowing that when they retire they will have beaten their bodies nearly to death; and their senior years will be more likely spent in pain and replacement knees and hips and so on.

So you are the real selfish one.

One more bowl game; especially one that is not int the playoff is NOT important enough to risk injury.

And by the way do your own scut work; you are the one that claimed it never happened often so YOU are the one that has to prove it. Screw lazy loudmouths like you.

Anyone with a real brain would understand that of COURSE a number of players looking to be drafted got injured in bowl games but then again that does not fit your agenda and thus never happens.

Childish name calling....
FYI...
I didn't need to hear you speak so immature to know just how childish you are.

It's difficult to engage subjects wity you such as us, we and our when you obviously love me, myself and I.

Just answer this one question....

That you conveniently skipped...

AGAIN

If ND made the playoff should he have skipped the game?

Yes or no?

You just don’t understand football do you?
You're kidding right lol? You are saying that to me, that's funny

Anyway, Jaylon suffered a debilitating injury. One of the worst an athlete could possibly have

And he came back from that and made a pro bowl

So for me to say if he didnt get injured, he would have been an all pro is not a stretch at all

He was one of the most athletic linebackers Ive ever seen in my life and he was coaxhed by one of the worst coaches in ND history

The bigger question is, would he have made the HOF if he didnt get injured. He was that talented

If you couldn't see that, that's says more about you than me

Grew up on the West coast and became a Raiders fan in the days of George Blanda and Jim Otto, et al. Then the ND tie kicked in with guys like Daryl Lamonica and Dave Casper, etc…. Loved the way the Raiders of old played the game, and Blanda in relief or kicking FGs into his late forties was a phenomenon and great theater for fans. Vertical passing, dominant lines, fearsome defensive backs that played man to man, flamboyant characters, and outstanding coaching. Us youngish “old timers” keep waiting for a rebirth of Raider football, just as we keep waiting for ND to win another NC!

Mayer will be fine in the NFL. He's durable enough with good hands. He's got a smidgeon of my two all-time favorite Notre Dame tight ends: Dave Casper and Mark Bavarro....i.e. he doen't hesitate to lower the shoulder and plow through. Not a comparison....just reminds me of those two to a degree. Casper was a freight train....Bavarro was a truck. But Mayer could be a snow plow if he stays healthy.

I think the Raiders will end up being very happy with MM, and just as importantly, the Raiders and Josh McDaniel are probably a really good fit for him. Mayer certainly isn't going to win any sprinting contests, but I was continually amazed with his understanding of how to catch a football. He was incredibly smart at being able to use his body to screen off the defender, and on top of that he has absolutely phenomenal hands. If it was going to be a contested catch, you felt pretty good about the odds of MM coming down with the ball.

As for comparisons, I sort of liked the "Baby Gronk" nickname, but as others have pointed out, Gronkowski was a little bigger than MM and probably a little bit faster. I really like the comparison to another Raider great and former Domer, Dave "The Ghost" Casper. Casper was a big guy (at least for his time), but more than that, he was also a really intelligent football player. He knew how to get open. He knew how to find the open spots in the zone. And he knew how to body off the defender to come down with the ball. That pretty much describes Michael Mayer's game. If MM can have the career that The Ghost did, the Raiders will have a good one.

Casper is a good comp!

There is a great YouTube video on Casper that is worth watching. (I tried to link it, but it is protected.)

Two quotes from the video made me laugh out loud. Raiders LB Phil Villapiano, when describing Casper's size: "His mother must have been a gorilla." Ken Stabler, describing how Casper ran over Minnesota Vikings safety Paul Krause in Super Bowl XI: "Look at our Super Bowl. He ran over Paul Krause like a pickup over a rooster."
