Michael Mayer Declares For NFL Draft.

Thank you Michael Mayer

Notre Dame Legend.
He’s probably the best pass catching tight end in Notre Dame history and we have had some great ones. Here’s to seeing him do the same in the NFL, make some pro bowls and continue the legacy of Tight End U.

I actually don't mind if Mayer, Foskey, Patterson and Joseph sit out the bowl game

I want to see the young guys. Even at wr, let me see how Merriweather, Thomas, Colzie and Styles look together.

I want to see Staes at tight end a ton. I want to see Watts and Henderson a ton at safety. I want to see Botelho and maybe Burnham/Goabaira get some time at vyper
I’m with ya other than Henderson… I don’t think he’s going to be playing much next year

He's going to have to. Joseph leaves.

It'll be Watts and Bowen as starters if we finish with Bowen. Henderson will be 3rd man. If Bowen leaves, Henderson has a very good chance of starting

He got less since he only got the guaranteed part
Numerous sources show that he probably will only make half of what he could have made in the NFL
While that is still a lot of money those brushing it off make me shake my head.

He definitely lost a lot. But he is still a wealthy man.

He's not just a warm body. That's a depth guy or a practice squad player. He starts in the nfl
Starting in the NFL is not sometimes all that
Before his injury he was a consensus top 10 pick; many draft mocks had him going top 5.
Go and look up what that would have meant on his first contract and what it would have meant for his second.
So for someone like that being just a starter is quite a lot less

When it’s not your 40 million or so lost, it’s not nearly as big of a deal. Jaylon Smith’s NFL career earnings took a huge huge hit, no matter what narrative you try to explain away.

And yet he's bounced back again. He's actually starting for the Giants now. So we have two starters on the Giants' D - him and Julian Love.

Not surprising news on Mayer. This is modern CFB, unfortunately.
He would never have to bounce back if not injured.....

In 2016, Smith signed his four-year rookie contract reportedly worth $6.49 million with a $2.9 million signing bonus.

On August 20, 2019, Smith signed a five-year, $64 million contract extension with the Cowboys with $35.5 million guaranteed

Mayer was a terrific player and a great representation of ND Football.

His interview was great, said he came to MD to get an awesome degree and knew they could help him with his goal of being a first round TE.

He literally saved our asses a number of times this year, without him this season would’ve been a total dumpster fire, he was far and away the main target and comfort for Pyne in the passing game. I saw on DD he graded out over 95% on his blocking assignments too, great stuff.

Good luck young man, and go Irish.

In general I agree but I think had Hamilton played against OSU last year in the Bowl, ND doesn’t give up a gajillion second half passing yards and TDs

"In what world is mayer not quitting on this team?"

The question you need to ask is -- If you were to ask any member of the ND Football team if they feel that Mayer (and possibly Foskey and Patterson) is quitting on them -- what would their response be? There, you will get very good responses and an idea of what actual players think

You sitting behind a keyboard acting like a sanctimonious fool calling someone a quitter has no value in this world. You're a big boy behind the keyboard, but if faced with a face to face meeting with someone like that, you would cower like a little school girl.
This is too funny. You’re the same guy calling someone a “school girl” and insulting them………anonymously from a key board.

MM was a damn monster from the moment he stepped on the field at ND. Really wish that he would’ve had a better QB this past season. Absolute stud. We’ll miss him.

I hope that he gets with the right team, right QB, and has an outstanding NFL career.

This! Get the young guys in. tOSU comes to ND in about 9.5 months. Have to find out which underclass men are ready to emerge.

If JS was destroyed in the bowl game then how did he last 4 years?

Modern Medicine and being 20-years-old are wonderful.

But at the end of the day, Jaylon Smith lost millions.

But if it is not your millions, who cares, right?

I certainly understand, but at the same time, totally disappointed in what CFB has become. Never something I can 💯% agree with. Turning your back on your team is not how I was raised. It's unfortunate
I agree 100% Diehard.

I want to apologize to breaking ND fans chops about selling their tickets opposing teams. I’m sorry. Do what’s best for you.

Beach, we had some spirited debates about Reggie Bush & getting paid. I hope he gets his Heisman Trophy back. Everyone is getting paid. Also kudos he got off that crazy Kardhashian train. He’s also pretty good with Quinny on fox sports.

Except he did it when it wasn't legal, so no.

Your right. It’s all over. If you’re not in the BCS , it’s the pro bowl game. Get as many young guys in to see what you got in 2023. For any gamblers be careful with bowl mania pools. Who knows who’s in or out!

Does it really matter? He unfortunately just got caught. There’s kids in high schools here in nyc getting big money. Check out Ian Jackson @ Cardinal Hayes HS ( home of Regis Philibin) & Boogie Fland @ Stepinac HS. Big big money.

Yes it does matter. That's the biggest problem with the world today "Does it matter?"

Just like Barry Bonds, the greatest MLB hitter I have ever seen, never getting into the HOF, Reggie Bush will never see his Heisman again.

Given that a scholarship player's compensation for playing football (or other sport) is free schooling that very few others can afford... it makes sense that when a player OPTS to not play, that the scholarship should be revoked and be required to be repaid.

If it's all about money, then the money should get paid back.

Are you saying that, if a guy is around for 4 years and plays 44 regular season games (or 3 years and plays 33 regular season games), he should have to pay back his scholarship if he sits out the bowl game of his last season?

He lost a lot of his ability and a good amount of money

He is still a very wealthy man and will continue to make good money as a starter and player in the league

Plus I believe he had an insurance policy out so he recouped some of that money he lost on his rookie deal

LMFAO.

Ludicrous to ask Michael Mayer to pay anything back.

I'd say the scholarship for his last year in school.

I'd say the scholarship for his last year in school.

I am still not getting what you are saying. Players are on 4 year scholarships. How can you say the scholarship is for a player's last year? Do you really expect for players to come on their own dime for 3 years?

Ludicrous to continue to pay someone when one chooses not to work.
Tell that to Jaylon Smith, who had an opportunity to make untold millions more if he skipped the bowl game.

It's not your money though, so why should you be concerned.

I expect players to honor their commitments. If they choose to break such commitments, then some of the compensation they were given to enter the commitment should be withdrawn.

LMFAO.

Michael Mayer has zero business playing in a bowl game.

Again. Zero.

1. I was under the impression that Smith still entered the NFL. Did he not get paid?
2. Who's to say that any player at any time could get injured and therefore should choose not to play?
3. It's certainly not my money. It's not yours either. Since it doesn't affect you, why are you taking a side on this subject one way or the other? Isn't the whole purpose of this board to be discussion of topics? As such, isn't sharing our opinions for discussion the whole point... whether it's my money or not?

On edit:
Huh... looks like Smith did get millions (32 million so far):

OK, we are back to square one. Are you saying that, if a guy is around for 4 years and plays 44 regular season games (or 3 years and plays 33 regular season games), he should have to pay back his scholarship if he sits out the bowl game of his last season?
I would also point out that I have a problem with the use of the word "compensation." This suggests payment. A scholarship is not a payment.

What "compensation" do you think athletes on scholarship get when they sign a scholarship offer? This is not SMU.

He should have to pay back his senior season scholarship since he did not complete the work.
Of COURSE a scholarship is a payment. It has real value in current $$ and in future earnings with the education gained.
