Last night, late, while waiting for the good wife to come home from her late shift (RN) I ran across something called 30-30. Anyway, this particular episode was focused on the "Catholics vs. Convicts" game in 1988. Incredible documentary. Replayed a big part of the game with commentary from Lou, Jimmy, all the key players; in-depth analysis of pre-game hype. It had it all.
The players descriptions of Lou and his coaching philosophy and operations were priceless. Also, hearing from the Miami players (Walsh et al) was great as well. The last golden age of ND football?
A few seasons later ND played at Husky stadium in the great NW. Won the game with a late drive and then key interception. After the game, Lou came out, with hundreds of people waiting for the Irish team and Lou. I fought my way through the crowd, stretched out my hand, holding my ND cap, and magic marker: "Mr. Holtz" could you please sign my hat"? "Yes, sir." He took my hat, signed the underside part of the bill, and disappeared in the crush. The signature has long since faded; along with Irish football.

I missed that program. Anyone know if there is a rebroadcast or way to watch it online?

(Yeah, I know, "Google it." I don't seem to see anything on my searches.)

I watched it too. I wish the guys that made the T-shirts didn't say they had regrets about making and selling them. Miami was a bunch of guys that deserved NO respect at all. Represented everything wrong with sports, including their coach.

I loved watching the reactions of the former players and coaches when Miami scored the last "touchdown" of the game. Thanks to replay, they all admitted it wasn't at TD after they saw it in slow motion...player didn't have control of the ball. I was especially surprised to hear Musberger say that he knew right away it wasn't a TD.

If replay had been in play back then, there is a possibility that Gary's fumble would have been overturned as well. The only angle available was an overhead shot, but, with today's technology, a sideline view (much like we see today) may have revealed something else.

But yea, I liked Walsh's and Searcy's look and response when they saw that TD as well. Funny, all these years and that's the only time that was ever brought up. and shown

Glad to see a ND fan admit that Gary's fumble would have been overturned!!! Funny thing about it was we had more catholics on our team than ND, plus we actually were not thugs...none of our guys had a rap sheet. We were, however, loud-mouthed, intimidating, rude, disrespectful and so forth. You guys don't like us 'cause we took you to the woodshed in '85 58 - 7. I remember Mushbugger and your former Coach Ara P really put us down for running up the score......regardless of the fact that you guys routinely ran the score up such as 1973 - 62-3 Army, 1977 69-14 Ga Tech, 1989 was 59-6 SMU' therefore, our opinion was for you to "go pound sand" and justly so. We haven't been too good over the past number of years but even we never did as bad as your team did this year, regardless that you beat us. Looking forward to seeing you next in our territory. Maybe we can have some shirts printed up "convicts on the loose".

Thanks. I watched it late last night. It was very good. I was interested by the trepidation the t-shirt makers had over the whole slogan. I remember being embarrassed by it myself because it was almost overtly racist.

I dont understand what the big to do is about Garys fumble. I believe he did not have control after Streeter lodged it loose and it was on his wrist not in his possession. But even so, because ND had the ball in its own 1 Rice fumbled on the next possession and gave Miami the great field position. Had the Gary touchdown counted then Miami's last fake touchdown would have never occurred. For lack of a better term "A wash". It all came down to the 2 point conversion either way. I am tired of hearing about the Gary fumble because it was inconsequential to the final outcome. Johnson could have tied the game and left #1 up to the pollsters. That was the real ND victory because his risky decision was gut wrenching and they all have to live with it.

Gary swears that Streeter lodged against his helmet, not the ball.

The 58 - 7 drubbing was not the issue, ND simply was terrible that year, no excuses for that-- but, it was the manner in which, in which Miami "took ND to the woodshed" the is the issue -- when up 37 - 7 heading into the 4th, with the game completely in hand, you do not block punts, throw the ball all over the field, and basically, rub the opponents nose in it. Yea, Miami was a bunch of bad boys who liked to talk trash (heck, ND has been known to talk trash as well) -- but, Johnson was the ring leader with is comment "pour it on them" that became the symbol for the hatred.

You cite the large scores by ND -- go back and watch, ND was not blocking punts, throwing the ball all over the field, and had their 3rd and 4th string members in there simply running the ball. As for the SMU game, Holtz was having his team take delay of game penalties so to NOT score -- and then was criticized for that action. SMU that year was simply terrible (having just come back form the death penalty that crippled SMU for years).

As for admitting that it would have been overturned -- no, I said it may have revealed something else, just like the last TD that Miami scored -- that would have been overturned as well.

You're going to make me revisit that game which is never a bad thing...but if you want to bring the Gary fumble into question there was two other calls or non calls in that game had they been to the letter of the rule or under replay that would have been a gigantic detriment to the Canes.

It may have been a Walsh fumble (not the one that was called fumbled) but a second...remember he was harassed alllllll day long.
Frank Stams looked like the next Lawrence Taylor in that game.

That to this day is the greatest college football game ever played. Other games have been exciting but you add in one key element...the talent
I believe 41 of the 42 starters that day spent some time one way or the other in the NFL...oddly enough the one who didn't was Tony Rice.

The Gary call did not determine the outcome of the game. I think what was missed in the documentary was that between Johnson, Holtz and Alvarez they were arguably 3 of the top tier of coaches of all time in college football going head to head in what had to have been one of the greatest games ever from start to finish.

NDs huge mistake was not getting Alvarez when Lou was done.....what a shame!

Nuance is never the strength of a Miami fan. But of those games mentioned, only the '77 Georgia Tech was an example of ND running up the score, and it came because the Tech coach Pepper Rogers and Dan Devine did not like one another and when Tech beat ND the year before said ND was fat, slow and out of shape, and Devine took that as a personal insult and refused to call off the dogs.
