Josh Barajas Transfers to Illinois State

He was one impressive high school player. I think he had an injury at ND, gained a lot of weight, and never regained his conditioning and good playing weight. His added weight and Elko's desire for agile quick instinctive linebackers were a poor match. Wish him well.

Sorry for Josh. It was pretty exciting around his HS the day he made his verbal. He was a heavy hitter then. Man among boys. Giving up a Notre Dame schollie and degree cannot be an easy decision to make. On a sort of unrelated side story. I went to Indy to see Josh and his HS team (Andrean HS) play in the state championship. They had won it the year before. This time though, it was apparent that the fire in the belly wasn't there and they lost decisively. Early on, the opponent (Tri West) had something like a 3rd and 39 inside their own 20 and got the first down on a simple throw away dive play. That should never have happened to a Notre Dame LB commit IMHO. Frustrating.

My good buddy who is a big ND fan and an ISU graduate, is very happy to have Josh as a Redbird. Sorry to see anyone leave ND, but glad he landed at a quality FCS program.

Linebacker is our weakest position.
He was in the #3 spot at his position behind two experienced veterans in Martini and Coney. Probably felt like he wasn't going to get much playing time. Good move for him, play right away at an FCS program.

What happened to "attending ND is a 40 year decision"? Is that just a catchy slogan or do students and student-athletes really believe it? Is starting at ISU and earning that degree an even trade off with placing 3rd on the depth chart while earning a Notre Dame degree?

For most kids no, for some kids yes.

I'd take LB's Morgan, Coney, Martini, Bilal over the safety crop of Elliott, Fertitta, Studstill and Coleman. I also like the corners better than the safety's.

Good luck to him. Some guys want to play. It was unlikely he would see much if any time at ND.

I would like to see Kofi Wardlow develop this year. He seems to have a lot of potential. We need guys now not later.

With the right kids, that is still a relevant idea -- but most kids want to play and have a shot at the NFL -- a school like ND (or, any other) is simply a means to get there. The degree means nothing right now.

very rarely, do prospects thinking that football is their career path, think 40yr plan.

In this case JB made a decision that is his decision to make. Since the NFL is not a viable future, an outsider might think that the ND degree is far more valuable than the experience of 2 years of what is effectively 'recreational football".

It's his decision but as an outsider looking in, I can't see this as an equal trade off. He couldn't work his way onto Special Teams and perhaps part time duty as a LB, all while earning that coveted ND degree? This is a lifetime decision that is a head scratcher to me, but it's his lifetime decision. I wonder if there is more to it than we know? It's just a darn shame.

If your dream is to make it in the NFL then yes.
