It will be tough to see him go, best ND defender since....???

but hey, you never know.

He is good, but not dominant. I think another year, a few more pounds, and he'd be a better pro. I do not see him making much of an impact now... in fact, I think Teo was better prepared to go pro.

Hope he stays.

Teo had a much bigger impact on games at this level, on and off the field. Jaylon has a much higher ceiling, Teo hit his in 2012.

A few more pounds? the man is 240 and will prob run in the 4.4's

his stock will not go higher. he's a top ten pick now. he'll kill it at the combine. manti has made no impact at the next level. jaylon is way better at this point in his career than teo was. manti had a phenomenal senior season but until then in my opinion he was good but not great.

I do but did you forget the previous 12 games and the magical season? He had a major impact on the campus, students, players, coaches, fans, oh. and Jaylon.

no I didn't but the whole phony girlfriend thing was a huge distraction towards the end of the year and his play against bama showed it. not sure how he had a major impact on jaylon smith. wasn't he still in high school in 2012 ?

Do some googling.. Manti told Jaylon he would pass the LB legacy on to him and Jaylon has mentioned the same in the recruitment of Daelin Hayes. Yes he was in high school and a big reason Jaylon was high on ND was Manti. Dots connected? Ya he got stomped by Bama, but he was the best player in the nation that year and the most decorated college defensive player ever. One of the best leaders I've ever witnessed.

couldn't agree more with your assessment of his senior season. jaylon is much better at the same point in his career than teo was.

I hope he stays. Doubt he does

He is the best LB ND has had on a generation though. Will miss him terribly
I think it depends on what happens with the remainder of the season.
If we win the Natty - he's probably gone. If we don't - I think he sticks
around for some unfinished business.

Sadly I agree, I think both Stanley and Smith are gone. Stanley is almost assuredly a top 5 pick, and Jaylon a mid-1st round pick. I think Day goes mid-2nd round. As for Fuller, who all Irish fans would love to stay, I think there's a slight chance he could come back. Very unlikely he'd be a 1st round pick - much more likely a mid to late 2nd round pick.

Could Jaylon benefit from another college in college? meh....maybe. But his potential remains huge and there's no doubt a team like Houston or Green Bay or others will snatch him up in the first round.

I'm about 90% confident this will be Jaylon's last home game. Not basing this on anything but my gut. He has been a joy to watch.

Outside of some unfortunate and nagging injuries Teo has played very well at SanDiego and is currently the leading tackler, even with the missed starts.

Jaylon may be even better. I believe he is rated as the #1 prospect for next years NFL draft. It will be tough for him to pass up!

A coach was once asked about a player leaving early and his reply was "If he cares about his family he'll go pro. If he cares about my family, he'll stay."

I expect Fuller and Smith to leave, but three and dones aren't necessarily a bad thing. Incoming recruits will like ND's record of producing desirable professionals, and it'll open more playing time for some of them

Jaylon IMO partially came here because we ran a 3-4 defense. He is an outside backer through and through.

Diaco left, BVG comes in and runs all sorts if crazy shit.

If Jaylon was rushing the edge every snap I would say he might be in the heisman discussion. I've never seen a linebacker as quick in the first 7 yards. Never.

If I were an NFL team and I ran a 3-4 I'm drafting Jaylon #1 OVERALL. Yes he is that incredibly athletic for a linebacker.
People drooled over Clowney. No comparison. Jaylon is much more explosive.

Will he go? Who knows. I hope not. Some might depend on Brian Kelly. Our success this year etc.

Will Fuller I would think is gone. Especially if he displays against the remaining big opponents. Stanford then possibly playoffs.

Brian Kelly......I don't think is leaving for a while unless he wins the NC because of Kizer.
Kelly finally has a QB that can throw, run, doesn't get rattled, can handle his verbal pasting on the sideline....oh and one that has real legit height.
Isn't it nice to have a QB who doesn't need windows between the o line to throw through ? Yes!

If Smith and Fuller were to stay for their senior season ND will be pre- season # 1. You never know. Keep in mind , ND "returns " 6 or 7 starters from injuries. This team is loaded next year on offense . Defensively , Smith would have a great cast returning . I would love to see Morgan and Coney inside and Smith move outside to Onuwalu's position. Up front Tillery, Jones, Rochelle, Cage and TRumbetti are quality and on the backend Have to replace Shue. Smith and Fuller may think a National Championship is very realistic.

I actually agree with you. He's in such good shape that I think it actually hurts him. He needs to add some weight if he's gonna be able to take on those massive linemen in the pros. Top 10 money is impossible to turn down though so, if he was my son, I'd advise him to leave. Lord knows I hope he stays and being who he is, it wouldn't shock me if he did.

I loved Teo and he was the best LB I saw at ND since Bob Crable. With that said, Jaylon Smith is better than Teo. Teo played in a much different style defense. He was awesome. But Smith is bigger, faster and just better. He is all over the field. Go watch how he plays. He has Lawrence Taylor type ability. Now I'm not saying he is as good as LT. I just mean you can basically play him anywhere on the field and and he will make a play. I've seen plays where it looked like a big gain only to have a Smith shoot the gap and make a big play. He is a stud. I hope he stays. If he doesn't he will be a top ten pick. Bank on it. He's that good.

Jaylon wants his degree and that moment on Senior Day in 2016 with his family in ND Stadium. I expect him to stay with his buddy Will Fuller.
I agree with you! I think the thought of next year's Irish success will tip the scale and he'll return with Fuller.

I just want to go on record as saying that Te'o was better than Smith. Smith is a better athlete. Te'o is a better linebacker and its really not all that close, IMO.

smith is so much better as a junior than teo was. teo had a awesome senior year but has been pretty ordinary as a pro. I think barring injury smith will be a perennial pro bowler. once in a generation ability.

I don't particularly remember a whole lot about Te'o's 2011 season, but I have a hard time believing that. As I said, Jaylon is clearly a better athlete, and he does a great job of running down screens and ballcarriers away from him, but I think Te'o was much better fundamentally, intelligence wise, and playing the position the way its supposed to played.

I think Jaylon can be a good NFL player lined up outside the TE, either shaded outside of the TE or walked out vs. two and three receiver sets, but I think he's average to below average when it comes to playing inside the tackle box -- poor footwork, slow to read and react, plenty of mental errors, and he doesn't do a good job of attacking the line of scrimmage.

It's not even close who has more ability and will be a better pro- Jaylon but I don't think it's close who was a better player at ND- Teo. Maybe Jaylon can stay and have half the Sr. year Manti did.

Jaylon much better athlete but as Bizzy points out Manti dominated games in a way Jaylon has not. Manti is easily one of the best defenders in ND history... I think he was that good.

Jaylon is one of those guys that can play multiple places. He will be a beast olb in the 3-4 but I can also see him playing middle linebacker. I am a raiders fan and they are trying to run a defense like seattle. I can see jaylon playing the bobby wagner role. He is not as big but he will get there and he is a much superior athlete with speed.
