A source tells FOX28 Sports Director Dean Huppert that Notre Dame linebacker Jaylon Smith suffered "multi ligament damage" in his left knee during the Fiesta Bowl.

During the first quarter, Smith was shoved by an Ohio State lineman and while falling down Smith's leg buckled awkwardly. After the game Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly said the All-American LB had a "significant knee injury".

Huppert's source says the ligament damage is severe enough that Smith is "in for the long haul" on his road to recovery. Notre Dame officials have yet to confirm the specifics of Smith's injury, outside of what Kelly said Friday evening.

Prior to the injury, Smith was projected to be a top ten pick in this spring's NFL draft. Before the Fiesta Bowl, Smith told reporters he would wait until a few days after the game to announce whether he would stay at Notre Dame or fore-go his senior season to play professionally.

While Smith still has a year of eligibility left, many football players have suffered significant injuries in bowl games and still went on to be drafted in the first round a few months later. Most notably, Willis McGahee tore his MCL and ACL during the National Championship game for Miami, but was still selected in the late first round by the Buffalo Bills in the 2003 NFL Draft.

Just awful....

We were lucky to have such a high character elite player for the past three years. Hate like hell to read that his damage is extensive. Tough decision for the young man, and hope what he decides ultimately results in Jaylon enjoying many years of success in the NFL before he embarks on a successful no playing career. Best wishes!

Did read a report yesterday that he had $5 million policy.

So if it does go completely bad. He isn't shirtless so to speak. But it is none the less terrible news.

I hope he gets a hold of Adrian Peterson's handlers.... What he has done is miraculous. Lots of pain, patience and hard work headed Jaylon's way.
God bless him and Godspeed to a full recovery.

How many freak knee injuries can ND have in a season? I don't know anything about nutrition or weight training or any of this stuff, but there has to be a reason for these injuries. Jones, Folston, Smythe, Crawford, Tranquil, and that doesn't even get to the broken bones.

I think of those only Folston and Tranquil I would label as "freak". Jones got rolled up on, see it all the time and Crawfortd we have no idea what happened to him. That said it does seem like we have had a ridiculous amount of knee injuries over the past 2 seasons.

May also have the option of returning to ND as primarily a student and rehabilitate his knee and enter the 2017 draft. Would have ample workout time to prepare for 2017 combine and any Pro-days by then.

He could still be selected in 2016 draft, but may slide depending on the official prognosis coming the next week or so. NFL teams would probably push for full disclosure before taking the chance.

Best thoughts for Jaylon, one of my favorite ND players. Go to the league, still a first round pick.

My wishes for good luck and a speedy recovery!

BTW, it was not a cheap shot in any way, it was just a freak accident. Do better!

Regarding the apparent number of athletic injuries at ND over the past couple of years, maybe ND should take a look at Stanford's athletic training methods. Apparently they (Stanford) have been relatively injury free over the past number of years. Is it pure luck or is it in the way they train?

There are discussions on this in the thread https://notredame.forums.rivals.com/threads/stanford-questions.59409/ with a number of links.

Anyone know how far he is from getting his degree? Any chance a team would draft him and allow him to rehab at ND this spring? Probably not, but if I was jaylon I'd nail down that irish sheepskin as an insurance policy! There are a lot of ND alum CEOs who will hire this guy down the road.

Sorry to hear that. Hate to see anyone get injured, especially when they have a promising future. Best of luck to him.

And no, it wasn't a cheap shot.

Hoping karma kicks that Ohio State Luckeyes OL in the a$$ someday. He is classless and a cheap shot artist. Urban Meyer has no class. He instructed his players to go after ND players and take cheap shots. He is so jealous of ND.

Another reason everyone thinks you are an idiot. You are just making this up. People don't like it when you try to shovel horsecrap to them.

Jaylon was injured on a fluke play where he awkwardly landed after the play. It was not a cheap shot and Turnover is a fool.

Here's hoping karma kicks you in the ass also!

I think it was a cheap shot. At the very least unnecessary. It was behind the play, the runner was down, and that OL knocked him down the first time and when he regained his balance and let up on the play the OL hit him in the back once again. It was dirty and certainly unnecessary.

Cheap shot by the OSU. player.

Complete Cheap shot by that OSU O linemen. Should of been flagged. Play was over and he pushed Jaylon from the side / back area - Jaylon didnt see it and couldnt react properly.

Dirty bullshit play. Watched it over and over many times. the play was ffing over. If Urban had any class = he'd have that linemen send an apology to JS.

It was def late...not sure it was dirty.....but totally NOT part of the play. Pisses me off......if the same thing had happened to Joey B. you can bet this board would be infiltrated with OSU fans calling foul.

I hope whatever is best for Jaylon. He is a great football player and person. But I wonder if coming back one more season for ND would help him make a lot more money in the following draft. He probably will fall quite a bit in this years draft. It might be too much of a gamble, though. I wish college players could get paid and they could be given more pay to stay their 4th year.
I think he will probably go pro this year and take a hit on his first few years of salary.
I missed the play when Jaylon got hurt--I had overslept (this bowl game was not as important as the regular season games or the playoff games). I kept looking to see where #9 was. When I heard he was gone I thought that there was not much chance of victory.

Good Luck Jaylon in whatever you do!!

*** So many football players in college and pro get severe injuries. You would think academics would be a priority for all high school players. I can also see why Jeff Smardzia played pro baseball over football--it was a very wise decision.

If there was a training regimen to help stop ACL/MCL tears, the women's soccer world would be doing it already. There isn't hardly a high level women's soccer player who goes through her career without at least one ACL tear. They are unpredictable freaky injuries that are usually non-contact.

Wow, just wow.

This is one ND player I am really pulling for. Jaylon Smith was not only a great player he is a great man. He really represented Notre Dame with class. I wish him all the best and I hope a very long NFL career
