Owen Say stopped 30 shots and Brennan Ali scored the third of three Notre Dame goals as the seventh-seeded Irish pulled off a massive upset Friday night, 3-2, in game 1 of a best-of-three Big Ten Hockey Tournament quarterfinal at 2 seed Minnesota.

Axel Kumlin and Michael Mastrodominico also scored goals for the Irish (11-23-1) against the nation’s third-ranked team on a night when all three lower-seeded teams won their Big Ten Tourney quarterfinal series openers on the road.

No. 6 Wisconsin upended No. 3 Ohio State, 4-1, and No. 5 Penn State edged No. 4 Michigan, 6-5. League co-champ Michigan State is the No. 1 seed and received a first-round bye.

ND and the Golden Gophers (24-9-4) clash in game 2 Saturday night at 8 EST at 3M Arena at Mariucci. The "if necessary" game 3 would be Sunday night at 7 EDT.
