If the final CFP rankings end up exactly like this preseason poll, here's what the CFP brackets would look like:

Bracket (assuming higher rank team wins each CCG):

#1 UGA – bye, then winner of #7 ND @ #6 Ole Miss
#2 the Ohio St – bye, then winner of #8 Michigan @ #5 Bama
#10 FSU – bye, then winner of #9 Penn St @ #4 TX
#13 Utah – bye, then winner of #30 Memphis @ #3 Oregon

Oregon ends up with - by far - the easiest path to the Final Four. Worst is Michigan vs Bama winner plays Ohio St. That UM-OSU game happened during the regular season, it might have happened again the the Big Ten Champ game and then they might be playing each other a third time in the CFP. ND would get a pretty square deal but that game would be at Ole Miss, not South Bend.

Does Mich get to use illegal videotape?

I'm pretty sure the poll people will manipulate the rankings to ensure what you put above doesn't happen.

Would they? That's really why I posted this hypothetical playoff. It isn't a prediction, it's an example of the type of disparities that can and probably will occur. Oregon would get, by far, the easiest path to the Final Four. And of course ND could just as easily replace Oregon. What a huge difference in opposition between the #5 seed and the #6 seed.

And would the committee tweak their rankings to prevent Ohio St from playing Michigan again and again and again? Or Georgia-Bama? We don't know. I hope they will but they have not announced any policy about it.

Despite the provocative intent behind the post, this hypothetical scenario does demonstrate something pretty cool. So many games will matter.

It also shows that we may have to root for the overcats. Consider number 1 and undefeated Alabama plays number 3 Georgia in SEC championship, and undefeated Notre Dame is number 2. The SEC winner is a top 4 seed either way and Alabama could possibly lose and stay ahead of ND. So we are routing for Alabama despite the fact they are ranked above us (and we could possibly pass them and be #1) so we hold the 5 seed? In other words being #1 doesn't really help us. Our emotional goal may be getting to #1 but our best playoff positioning is highest rated non-champ, so in (a rare) conflict, that's what we want? Oh the humanity......

There was no provocative intent behind the post. That hobgoblin is within your head, not mine.

Yes, you are only 4 games below .500 to Ohio State, while a full 8 games below .500 to Michigan.
And a full 5.5 more National Championships than Michigan

And a full 3 more National Championships than OSU

If you add both Michigan and OSUs NCs together, you're still .5 NC behind ND

Think about that for a second....
