Imagine the following scenario for final regular season records.
Top Ten shown only because the rest don't matter.
Clemson 12-0
TCU 11-1 (maybe 10-2)
Baylor 11-1 (maybe 10-2)
MSU 11-1
Notre Dame 11-1
Ohio State 11-1
LSU 11-1
Iowa 11-1
Alabama 10-2
Stanford 10-2

Hard to imagine ND being left out playoff if the above pans out as shown.
Their lone loss being to the only undefeated team - by two measley points -
at the frighteningly dreadful Death Valley???

You'd have a tough time convincing me we'd be left out.

I will take battling with USC for recruits any day if it means ND increases their shot at the playoff. USC is going to kill in recruiting either way.

I agree. If that is somehow a necessary condition to Notre Dame having a better chance to make the playoff, then so be it. If ND is in national title contention, that presumably should help our recruiting, too.

Mental shortcomings? You just laid out the perfect scenario for ND to get in without any reasoning. For instance, if MSU goes 11-1, who beats them? I assume you are thinking OSU. So if OSU beats them, who does OSU lose to? Who does LSU lose to if Bama goes 10-2? Who does Stanford lose to besides ND? Why would Baylor or TCU have 2 losses? What about Iowa and OK State...both undefeated.

You can't really make a determination without including what would happen in conference championship games. Plus, you're only evaluating us (and our opponents) on the basis of a loss, rather than also taking into account who those teams beat.

With Clemson's remaining schedule, any loss would be a bad loss and considered "Clemsoning". ND may well still get a good rub from their only loss being an 11-1 Clemson team. Not fair to Clemson, but they can't lose late to any of the mediocre teams left on their schedule while ND hypothetically beats a team like Stanford.

The committee has said before it takes into account how teams are playing at the end of the season, thus, if you're going to lose, lose early and lose to a good team.
