insiders have been saying that they were the team to beat recently. I had my hopes up like other irish fans did that he would come back and reverbal to our irish but it's hard to compete with a school that played dirty with this recruitment and offered his sister a track schollie even though many people have said that his sister didn't have the speed for div 1 schools

slippery slope

It seems recruiting brings out either the best or worst behavior of coaches, recruits and even families.
Extorting family 'perks' seems to be trending; or becoming more open.

Browning is likely off the board as well, based upon comments from TOS.

We start a home & home with Georgia.

Nothing in life gets to the point faster than just beating the opponent, shaking their hand, & simply walking away.

After he cancelled his trip to ND for the Irish Invasion I expected him to go with Georgia.
After he cancelled his scholarship his sister received her track scholarship offer. I have not seen her perform but based on her published numbers she did not deserve a scholarship (especially not a full ride) and hopefully the track coaches / team is being well compensated by some boosters etc.

well, TOS claims her track prowess is not at D1 scholarship level.
My best guess, For qualifications at UGA if your bro is a football 5* then you must at least come in no worse than 3rd at a K-Mart blue light special.

i've even seen some suggest the "family emergency" that caused him to cancel the II trip was an ultimatum that his sister would get the offer pulled if he visited. Again just speculation

Ozzie Myers the corrupt Democrat congressman from Philly said it best, " Money talks and bullsh-t walks ". That was 40 years ago it still applies today in politics and sports.

I guess coaches and boosters know that they can't buy kids today with cars or money without getting caught unlike in the past and so offering family jobs at the school or giving family members or girlfriends schollies is the next best thing for them

I read the back story about Arr Benn's commitment to IL. (one of Weis's decommited 'silents'). Apparently Zook offered a scholarship to the brother who was at the time in prison. It may have been a sleazy move by Zook, in the end given the family considerations it turned out for the better.

well pers I remember listening to mike franks power hour show on his irish website about five or more years ago and he talked about having a private conversation with a recruit and to make the story short mike said that the unnamed kid talked about two schools who tried to offer him a car if he picked there school back during the 1999 and 2000 recruiting season

Well, it has gotten much worse. Where we are now, I think a recruit would laugh at 'just a car' . You need to fill the trunk with cash, thrown in a schol for a sis or brother, give Mom a job and offer a staff position to an uncle or H.S. coach; and don't even try to bring up going to class or being socially accountably!

Seems like you're using a pretty big brush to paint that picture. Sometimes that move to offer a scholarship to sis or give a family member a job is just about creating some added and unwelcome pressure on a kid.

^ well, it is a broad brush stroke on but the canvas is a smaller group of pretty obvious 'teams of interest'.

not extort in the 'ilegality' sense but more along the line of a shakedown. Whether the team makes the offer initially or the demand (request) is made as a negotiation, it has become part of the recruiting process. And it has changed the power landscape of college football. If you disagree, well what would be more incredible is if we all agreed all the time.

There's no "if" - I disagree that recruits are the ones doing the extorting, shaking down, bullying (or whatever other word game you want to play) when it comes to college football. Recruits are outmatched by well funded coaching staffs that manipulate the recruiting process and recruits season after season after season. These kids have everyone from scouting services like this one to big time programs looking for some sort of an angle go get an in with them - and it goes on and on and on. Its a long brutal process for most recruits.

I'm fine with disagreement about who's at fault for the brutalization in the recruiting process. But I think painting a kid's motivation as nefarious based on internet rumor or the subjective opinion of some dude on "TOS" adds to the brutalization of the process.

brutal image, that of a famed WR, flashing a wad of cash for all to see before yanking the pic of the net.
this is not a one sided thing.

I was engaging in genuine and respectful discussion. I've known a number of Division I recruits that went through the process. None made demands, and none enjoyed the process. Many agonized over their decisions.

If you want to make snarky comments about a cash flashing WR and treat it like its the status quo, then I'm done.

the notion that the dealings are all one sided just do not matchup with the transactions we read about.
The word 'brutilization' was what I was referring to.

There may have been a time when the upper hand was with the teams; but off what has transpired in recent recruiting seasons the prospects and their families have gotten in the game. Just consider the ND 'Pot O Gold' recruiting tool, ND doesn't deal in the bagman delivery so this gimmick tries to emphasize that at ND the gold is at the end of a jouney, not at the beginning.

That the competition, especially for the top o the class recruit, is a one sided deal where teams have all the negotiating power, is a bit archaic and naive.

You may disagree, And no one was disrespecting your comment. It was just a reply to the 'brutilization' adjective that seemed equal in description.

For decades, the NCAA has worked hard to limit legitimate financial opportunities for student-athletes. It began back in the 1970's when athletic directors complained it was too expensive and risky to give players 4 year scholarships, so they converted them into one-year renewables and banned 4 year scholarships. In the late 80's, over 30% of NFL players disclosed in a self reported survey that they had accepted under the table payments while in college - mostly to pay for food and clothing. It took 30 years and a backlash of public opinion to get the NCAA institutions to consider a cost of attendance stipend to cover those costs. NCAA rules unfairly limit how much student-athletes can earn in the off-season - not because student-athletes lack valuable employment skills, but because its too expensive and risky for schools to monitor student-athlete employment. The NCAA rules are about what's best for the NCAA and its members. I agree that the system needs major reform, but those that need it really don't have a seat at the reform table.

You are correct about her not having the speed for a division 1 schollie, but she isn't a runner, she throws the discus and shot. Playing dirty? What exactly is dirty? Can only one family member be on scholarship at the same school? If a coach isn't using every resource available to him in recruiting then he isn't doing his job. No rules were broken, track coach is happy, football coach is happy.

dirty is giving someone a schollie when they don't have the talent for div 1 schools. a lot of people have said that she doesn't have div 1 level talent but UGA offered her anyway and she just happens to have a brother who is a five DE in football. I would have loved to been a fly on the wall when the discussion came up in the athletic offices about giving Robert's sister a schollie.i bet the track coach wasn't as happy as you say behind closed doors. you can say what you want Grumpyolddawg but this has DIRTY written all over it

Shows how much you know. Aren't you the same guy who repeatedly came on this board insisting that Demetris Robertson was going to school in state?

well, it is so, when it comes to 'track' she is a 'dawg' now . If they (UGA) had had to create an event for her they would have. UGA will probably throw in a campus job, similar to Robby Benson's in 'One on One' (his job was to turn on the automatic sprinklers).
But in the end it seems they are "banking" on DE. He is a great looking prospect, but not all great H.S. prospects are in the end great.
Stanford degree/no football: no problem ND degree/no football no problem; but 3 n out at a football factory and a if a bust on the field...well, no matter they are 'all in' now.

Always kills me how this board is "wait til signing day" when ND gets a commitment but a recruit is "solid" when they commit somewhere else. He liked ND enough to commit early so ND still has a chance - remember another recruit ND landed/lost/landed from Georgia?

Her scholly is the Hope scholarship which is available to any student in the state of Georgia. It definitely a benefit for the state that she can go to GA under that umbrella. But it's nothing shady as some in here speculate.

Would you like to buy the Pulaski Skyway here in Jersey?

(amazing what people can convince themselves of!)

Before we run around claiming to know the scholarship worthiness of a female track runner, remember ND is the school that gave a football scholarship to Bruce Heggie. It's more than possible the Georgia track coaches think she is at least good enough for a scholarship.
