If Kelly loses games who wins them ?

If Kelly is to shoulder the blame for all losses than who gets credit for all the wins ?

Some on this board say that the expectation for this program is 8-4 , Purse said the new expectation level is 6-6

When did any member of the ND football program make a statement that 8-4 was the expectation for this program ?

I say that the participants on the field have the lions share of the influence on the outcome of games -- most coaches would agree

BTW -- I'll let you in on a secret -- psst that's why they recruit --sssshhh keep that quiet .

It defies human nature to be emotionally up every week. Even one of the great motivators at Notre Dame in the last half-century, Lou Holtz (1986‑96), acknowledged that a football team can reach an emotional peak only about three times per season - and for each of them there will be a reciprocal letdown. What is crucial is there is enough talent to compensate for it against that opponent. - See recruiting .

It's about players

The HC is ultimately responsible for everything. There are a lot of opinions as to how much direct impact a coach has on the actual outcome but even if you believe it's the players that are ultimately it's the HC job to recruit and develop players. So if you don't have the necessary talent to win a game that falls on the coach for not recruiting and developing the talent.

I never once heard Lou that you can't be "up" for every game. Are you going to be as high for UMass as you are for USC.. hell no, but that doesn't mean you can't emotionally up for that game. Unlike every other sport there are such a small number of games and they are a week or more apart that it's fairly easy to get some degree of motivation for every game.

If you believe it's about the players it's the coaches job to recruit those players and develop them

The ave old question.

Is it the Jimmy and Joe's, or X's and O's.

I believe you need both, but better coaches gets you farther than the other.
