Coach Freeman is going to keep bringing the corner blitz from the boundary and I will keep breaking them down for all of us. 1st drive of the 3rd quarter it is 1st and 10 at the 13:55 mark.
After last weeks bad fits in the corner blitz on Toledo's long run this one is nearly ran to perfection. Most teams run a corner blitz and roll the safeties to replace the corner and play Cover 3 behind the blitz, but not Coach Freeman. He sends 6 on this call and pattern matches with the underneath coverage defenders. ND is 1 proper fit on the running back outside shoulder away from a big sack.
The defensive is in their standard 4-3 front, and on the call the line slants with great fundamentals to the wide side of the field. #57 does an excellent job crossing the face of the center to the wide side, and #7 pinches perfectly turning the offensive tackle with him into the B gap. This opens up a huge hole off the edge of the Purdue formation which allows #27 to have an open free shot at the QB. #95 beats the offensive tackle off the wide side, which forces the QB to turn back into the boundary where #6 has a clear sack. Instead of keeping outside contain and attacking the upfield shoulder of the running back #6 goes and attacks the running back on his pass protection.
This play is nearly excecated just as Coach Freeman designed. The coaching point here is if #6 does not try and blow up the running back it's either himself or #27 on a clean sack. This would have made it 2nd down and 17-18 to go, and more than likely would not have lead to a field goal on this drive. This is a great play for Coach Freeman to use as a teaching tool as this 2021 Notre Dame defense will keep getting better each week.
