Finebaum: Notre Dame Is A Dumpster Fire

Jack never has said in public and especially to this board what BK has to accomplish this season to retain his job. Especially a won/loss record. That is something fans come up with. It would take something of Godzilla proportions for ND football to suffer a fatal wound. An 8-4, 7-5, 6-6, 5-7 season is not it. ND will survive and recover with BK or someone else. They thought it was the end when Fr Ted "de-emphasized" football under Leahy by taking away schollies. They thought it was the end under Kuharich, then Devore, then Faust, then Davie. Maybe they thought it was the end when Rock died. Somehow, ND rebounded. BK is not stupid. He knows what is on the line and though he might not be a fan favorite, he has made changes and hopefully for the good. For the sake of the kids, they deserve 100% fan support without silly self imposed fan boycotts and constant ragging on every mini decision that is made. We know as fans. The players know, Jack knows, and BK and staff knows that 2017 is very important but not a death watch for the program. At least, that is the way I see things.

I think Jack committed to BK that he will finish his contract, regardless of the record. But, I think his coordinators are to be more influencial. JMO. ND will not eat another contract.

Toby, I generally agree with this. That said, the short term health of the football program is at stake here, and I don't think the alums nor BOT will allow the program to live through a four plus year decline on top of last season. A poor showing that seriously hurts this years recruiting class would precipitate that kind of decline, and I personally think the only answer then would be to fire Kelly and create some optimism and excitement with a new HC. A poor showing in my book is a combination of won loss record, and unacceptable quality of play on the field. Frankly, I don't expect either to be a problem this season, and I am looking forward to seeing the positive impact of Long and Elko and Bilas, et al.
