Finebaum: Notre Dame Is A Dumpster Fire

Yeah, if it weren't for Finebaum pointing it out, no one would know that ND had a bad year.
Comprehension. Thanks to Finebaum more focus and spotlight has been put on the dumpster fire that is Kelly and Jack That is what he means, not the record. The record in 2016 is just the latest emergence of a failing, a disease, that is ND apathy and poor decisions like extensions and bad hirings and keeping the weasel in the chicken coop

Maybe Tommy Clements will get the Rams gig.
Why are you calling him Tommy? Would you care to compare his resume with our pariah?
4-8
38-31
Probation
Vacated wins

Keep up the good work.

Tommy was one of my favorite ND QB's. Is he still coaching?
So much for your Insider info that Kelly had no safety net. I would say he landed very softly.

You're full of sh**. I am fully aware of lying swarbrick's and plagiarizing jenkins incompetence. That axis of failure will eventually topple and the sooner the better....

"Axis of failure...." wow you are a loon.
When you and your nutty friends talk, do you lower "the cone of silence."

Good for Finebaum Maybe if more media said what he did, something might change We are a mess and he is the only one focusing on us apparently no one cares Desmond is very happy sad

I seem to recall many people on here last year when ND went 10-2 in the regular season say that Kelly did probably his best coaching job in light of the many injuries that occurred at the beginning of the season.

What changed from year to year (outside of BVG -- yes, we were all commenting on him)?

Yes -- a little sarcasm in there as well.

I don't know if he has to have a great season, I think if he wins 8 games he'll be back in 2018
I don't see that, unless it's an 8-4 where we look really good and catch a couple bad breaks. The only thing 8-4 is in 2017 is better than 4-8. But I don't think enough better.

I'm not so sure. With that 6 year extension I think they are looking to ride Kelly as long as they possibly can. If he goes 8-4 they'll talk about how much progress the program has made after a 4-8 season, great recruiting class.

The only way I see Kelly gone after next year (assuming he wins 8 games) is if there is a massive backlash that impacts; attendance, merchandise sales, donations and tv ratings.

History would tell you that none of those, with the possible exception of TV ratings, is likely to happen. And with our NBC contract locked up for a long run, TV ratings might not even move the needle. Assuming he doesn't get personally involved in some malfeasance, Kelly will live or die based upon on-field results, not ancillary things.

hence my comment that he'll be back at 8-4. ND will have no motivation to terminate his contract and pay out 4 or 5 years he has left because I think it's fairly evident now that on-field results are not their primary motivating factor.

Go 8-4 bring him back for 2018 and if he goes 8-4 again you only 3 or 4 years left on the contract and they might be willing to eat that.

I think it's just a matter of measuring disappointment. Yeah, maybe in the overall scheme of things a four win improvement is enough to give him some more rope. But if we put up another 4-8 or 5-7 type of season, the amount of any buyout will be irrelevant IMHO. Then there's the subjective parts that come into play, that are harder to measure. 8-5 in 2014 with all those injuries on defense may look totally different than 8-5 looks in 2017.

I am in no way calling you out but one of the frustrating things from some of Kelly's supporters has been the excuses. I honestly don't care how many injuries we had in 2014, 8 wins is not acceptable. The injuries were devastating because he has recruited so abysmally along the DL and DB positions. Also, I'm all for giving a coach a mulligan for a bad year, it happens but only 1. 2011, disappointing season because <insert excuse>. 2013, disappointing season because <insert excuse>. 2014, disappointing season because <insert excuse>. 2016, disappointing season because <insert excuse>.

The debate could rage on as to why those seasons were disappointments but the reality is it's Kelly's job to win, period. Frankly, I'm not interested in why we didn't win more than 8 games or why we got humiliated in the only 2 real bowl games we have played in, I care about results.

At the end of the day results are all that really counts. When you are early in your realm year to year steady improvement might be the most important thing. But from year 7 to year 8? No. We need drastic improvement.

Well, for the moment Finebaum has moved on. Lane Kiffin is now in his crosshairs.

Kiffin's first signee is De'Andre Johnson the former FSU QB. Finebaum wasn't impressed.

.....never mind that the President and AD had vetted and approved Johnson before Kiffin was the coach.

Cool, but I bet you wish it was Barbara Feldon. I think that was 99's name.

We had Joey Heatherton. When she baby sat you'd climb a tree and take a dive just so she could comfort you.

I just think kelly should at least speak to 2 other DCs
Vic Koennig from Troy is awesome and he even posts his phone number.

Brian Collins from LIU Post would be a good get. Not only is he the DC he is also their HC.

Given the pathetic fiasco that went on with Brian Van Gorder and BK's ignorance to it I truly believe he should never ever hire anyone.

cgvr, I am just finishing up the graphics for next year's "Coach 4 & 8" edition 2017 T-Shirts. Swarbrick is featured as well. Collectors item for sure. This 2016 past year's edition "Coach 8 & 4" T-Shirt sales were fabulous until we lost that 5th game. Stuck with a few, so I sent them to the College Football Hall of Fame. They loved them. Have a couple left here, do you think the staff at the Observer might like a few?

Yes, of course they would.

kelly is the most "fantabulous" coach in ND history.
We are so fortunate to have him.
Who cares about major bowl wins, end of year rankings, disgusting on and off field behavior?
Seriously, I have never been prouder than when our player went "NDamukong Suh" on that southern cal prone player. Haha, we avoided a massive lawsuit because he had no neck or spine injury.
Being on NCAA probation also will scare the crap out of opponents. "Bad boys, bad boys...."
Can you believe the sideline dancing? What team spirit!!! When kelly joined in I knew we were trending up!! I was so looking forward to congratulating him on a fine job when the # 1 and # 4 National powers played (both catholic schools) in southern cal. However, he "no showed" something about a bye week and he had to practice his golf game.

We are ND! We're # 1. We're #1....

PS Mark Helfrich, Oregon:
4 years, 37-16 (.698), Rose Bowl W 59-20, Nat'l Championship appearance in 2015
Awarded five-year, $17.5 million extension in 2015
4-8 in 2016 - FIRED

Don Adams lived in the town I grew up in.

Don Adams. That's all you got? My hometown produced Tony Zale, Alex Karras, Jackson Five, Karl Malden, Ron Kittle, Dan Plesac, LaTroy Hawkins, Lloyd McClendon, Bob Kuechenberg, Frank Borman, Hank Stram, Freddie "Boom Boom" Williamson, Toby Smart and that's just naming a few.

We were discussing "the Cone of Silence".

Notable people....

Joey Heatherton. Nothing more to say. Sandy Koufax. Again, nothing more to say. Floyd Patterson was my favorite boxer when I was a kid. I don't know exactly why, but he was. Henry Hill. Now that would have been an entertaining sit down dinner with him. I like Joan Jett but she doesn't belong in the R&R HOF. Amy Shumer should not be on anybody's list for anything. Not a bad list, though.

He continued today on ESPN in his on-going rant about Brian Kelly and Notre Dame football.

Besides Finebaum saying "Notre Dame is a dumpster fire", he also said "the train is off the tracks".

Finebaum really has no love lost for Brian Kelly.
Add about 70% of ND's fan base that also can't stand Kelly and want him gone.

Is 70% an official documented number or is it a wild guess by you? "Can't stand him" is much different than fans who question his coaching abilities. As I have mentioned a few times to try and put things in perspective, there are many ladies who have benefited greatly from "Kelly Cares Foundation" and those beautiful women can stand him.

Seeing the Kelly lovers get so angry and take things to the gutter is kind of funny to read through.

This is so true and spot on accurate! After this past season, Kelly was taken aside and given the wake up call of his life (remember the rumors that his agent was listening to offers?). He was told that a change had to happen or else. This, from what I hear, wasn't just from Swarbrick, but others all the way up to the BOT. There needed to be a serious change. Hence, the new coordinators and staff and - no more play calling. He's got a year to show that this can be turned around. 7-5 or worse won't cut it. Everyone seems to be placing a lot of "hope" on Wimbush. Remember, when you have to hope for a situation to occur, you're usually wrong 90% of the time. That's why it's called "hope". We will know the future of the program after the 4th game. By then, the product on the field should be laid bare. Swarbrick committed the worst management decision we've seen since the White, Wadsworth and Monk shows. The question will be whether it will become fatal to ND football.
