"You can see the players that I have recruited, you know who they are, We've had one class of kids that weve recruited that I've had my hand on."Let's see....."If you're lookin', we're lookin'!....Nope, that's not it...."Next guy in"! No...that used to be it.....oh, never mind!
its also a very big matter of who the head coach is.....If Saban leaves Bama...recruits think twice....same with Urban Meyer at OSU....as good as the program is...its about the head coach in at least equal measure. There is always 1 or 2, every class. Donovan is a tough one to lose, but when your program is in the shitter, you don't know who your coordinator is going to be and the fans are trying desperately to keep you in state, some kids give in.
The reality is that if you are a kid with NFL aspirations, who wants to play for a winning program right now, Notre Dame isn't going to be a sexy option for you... When your minset is to work towards being a pro, why would you go somewhere where the path (academics) is going to be much more difficult, if you they're not winning at a high level.
When it comes to recruiting, ND isn't "specisl" anymore to majority of recruits. The prestige of an ND degree is not enough to lure the very top kids. It has to be coupled with winning and success.
Have we ever had a recruit that decommitted and then ended up signing with ND? I can't think of one.yeah, still claims Irish #1 but that's tough to believe.
I'm reading it as if the Irish turn it around we have a chance, if they don't then he's definitely going elsewhere and wants to take other visits in the meantime.
I don't blame him, a 6-6 record should be the worst record you can get and still coach the next year when all the players are your recruits.
Well you certainly can't blame the kid after watching 5 debacles already this year.
And that's why ND is no longer relevant. Education only matters to low 4 * and 3 * kids that know the NFL is a long shot. High 4 and 5* kids want to go to fb schools. ND used to be one but, something changed in the mid 90s. It's been down hill ever sinceSeriously, is anyone surprised and really, does anyone care? I'm not sure when it happened but somewhere along the way we gave 16 17 and 18 year olds power. As far as I'm concerned I could care less. Don't let the door hit you on your way out. Here's what I tell these kids if I'm recruiting. Look we really like you , we think you will fit well with what we do and you will get a top notch education if things do work out for some reason. I'm not kissing your ass. It's real simple your either in or you're not. If not, no big deal. Good luck. Just move on. I'm tired of all the recruiting drama.
Lets be clear Education does not matter in the vast majority of job opportunities this is the era of make your own way, entrepreneurship, and do what is best for you. ND is not a better choice than Stanford who has top academic reputation and top football. It is not a fun choice. It is not a climate choice. It is not a top winning football school. It is not hip. It is not going to be easy academically and since education does not make a difference anymore, why get put in jail like so may of our players for bad grades? Take the easy, sexy best football school -- all we have is a nice campus, good reputation scholastically, some tradition, and a bad head coach. And that's why ND is no longer relevant. Not anywhere near enough for most kids.
To say ND has " some " tradition is a bit of an understatement. 11 National Championships and one of the top winning percentages of all
Nothing like a gross overgeneralization.
I agree with this.To say ND has " some " tradition is a bit of an understatement. 11 National Championships and one of the top winning percentages of all time is a little more than " some " tradition. Stanford is better academically, no question about that. Top football? Ok, the 7 years they have been pretty darn good while ND has been up and down. Still , with the right coach ND could be a force again. There is a coach out there who can not only win but have sustained success. I will say this about Stanford. The way they play now, is the way ND should play. Believe me if the do, they will get dominant linemen , backs and great QBs.
What pablum..... read the article...He spells it out clearly. It seems a lot of people are making wild assumptions based on this de-commitment. Steve Wiltfong was on Weekday Sportsbeat today and categorically said he knows why Jeter decommitted and it had absolutely NOTHING to do with ND's 2-5 record or ND's defensive scheme. Eric Hansen then asked why Jeter decommitted and Wiltfong said he couldn't get into specifics because that would violate Jeter's trust, but he said it had more to do with Jeter needing to "cross the t's and dot the i's," and if he is able to do so he will likely re-commit. That tells me the likely issue is Jeter hasn't met admissions' standards yet. When Jeter said ND was still his leader he meant it.
Not that there's anything wrong with that. The dyke has broken !
“I don’t want to play for a mediocre school,” he said. “I don’t want to play for a team that goes like 7-6. I want to go to a school that plays in the big bowl games or plays in the College Football Playoff. I don’t want to go to an average school because I don’t think I’m an average player. I want to make big time plays on a big time stage.”
Peace out Jeter
As usual, your rebuttal doesn't actually disprove anything I wrote. The article doesn't mention anything about Jeter saying he still considers ND his leader, which he clearly does here:What pablum..... read the article...He spells it out clearly.

Yeah, Porky is a real frightening guy. He is a sack of crap.Gosh guys, some of you need to get a glass of wine and rediscover life. Yes ND is 2-5 and nobody is happy about that. Theskibro, hopefully few people ever read your comments above. Your thoughts on ND football would be the competitions dream sales pitch. If you really believe what you wrote, you should be proud if Kelly ever wins a game. And CVGR, we get it. You HATE BK. I mean you constantly spew venom about a man that is a football coach. Of course you do this safely behind your computer. Go buy a bottle of MD 20-20, if they still make that stuff and relax. ND lost an blue football player. That's not good, but the sky really isn't falling. I promise. Go Irish!
“With me, it changes every week,” he said. “One time, Pitt was my top school. One time, Michigan was my top school. Obviously, Notre Dame was top school. One time Penn State was my top school. One time Ohio State was my top school. I’m not even going to post on Twitter what my top schools are because I know it’ll change in a heartbeat.”As usual, your rebuttal doesn't actually disprove anything I wrote. The article doesn't mention anything about Jeter saying he still considers ND his leader, which he clearly does here:
Why do you think a Pittsburgh sports website would leave out that key detail? They could have mentioned it and still included everything else, and yet they purposely left it out. Could it be they have a rooting interest in Jeter staying home? What else did they leave out of that article?
Again, Wiltfong says he knows the reason why Jeter decommitted and he made it clear Jeter didn't want that specific reason to become public. If this is indeed an issue where he hasn't met admissions standards and he doesn't want to publicly talk about what he has to do to meet those standards then, now that his recruitment is again open, it shouldn't be too surprising for him to say what he is looking for in a school, it shouldn't be too surprising if he talks favorably about other schools, and it shouldn't be too surprising if he alludes to possible excuses for de-committing without actually categorically stating the reason.
Here's the Wiltfong interview:

And yet he did post on Twitter who his top school is.“With me, it changes every week,” he said. “One time, Pitt was my top school. One time, Michigan was my top school. If Texas fires Charlie Strong, and USC doesn't immediately grab him up, I'd like Kelly to offer him the DC position (with the idea of taking over down the line?) This is what great coaches -- who have healthy egos, but are secure and not threatened by strong co-coaches -- like Saban and Meyer do. They hire HCs in coordinator positions (Schiano and Kiffin) with great success. There is always 1 or 2, every class. If Strong came to ND the recruits would follow.
Thoughts?
