Listening to the morning news , Disney stock drops inspite of the super huge opening of the new "Star Wars" movie . Newscasters pointed to new concerns about ESPN ? What is up with ESPN? Losing money ?

Tons of people are cancelling cable subscriptions. And instead just having local channels and streaming shows over Hulu, or movie subscriptions such as Netflix. This is costing ESPIN millions. Other fans are leaving cable and opting to just order services such as Watch ESPN or Sling TV and ESPIN makes make a smaller profit off of those.

Also enter FS1, and other carriers that are not part of the Disney system.

ESPN massively overpaid (by about $800 million) for rights fees for Monday Night Football. They also paid triple the rights fees for NBA games and MLB games. The overpaid by hundreds of millions (into the billions?) That, coupled with the loss of subscribers has helped to keep Disney stock down despite the massive success of their movies. ESPN is a huge drag on DIS.

I believe verizon moved espn off of their basic tier as well, instead of getting paid for every tv on the service people have to opt in to a package with ESPN. Notice all the stripped down ESPN shows and how many anchors and personalities (Cowherd for example) have been cancelled on espn. subscriptions are was down. I switched to Sling tv, hulu, and netflix and havent looked back.

I cut the cord over a year ago. I would've done it a lot sooner if ESPN didn't have a near monopoly on college sports.
