Closing the gap on Alabama since 2012

Offensively, the Irish are as talented as Bama. Special teams may be even. Defensively, the Tide are miles ahead of the Irish or at least they have been. Clemson rolled up a lot of yards on the Tide. The talent level isn't close IMHO. Academically, the Tide couldn't get a ride on the Irish bus.

Would ND be able to score on them or would it be 35-0 again before Saban called off the dogs?

Fairplay, if the guys from Bama that could spell SEC played, the Irish would have a field day. :)

I wonder if Saban is perplexed . Year after year, He gets 5- star athletes on defense .His defensive line is 2 deep and they rotate to keep the players fresh . Also has blue-chip defensive backs and here again players on the bench who could start for major programs .

Did not understand the Clemson game ? The number of yards .they say defense wins games , I knpw Clemson has a great offense ,but can not understand why with all the talent ,Alabama's defense was not better in the title game . Saban must be trying to figure it out Wonder if he is going to change some things ( defensive approach ) to games.

The 2012 team had the Luck of the Irish , the missed short field goal ( 37 or32 yard? ) by a very reliable Pitt kicker stands out among other close games in 2012.And that 2012 Alabama team might have been a better team than this year's Alabama team . But the Alabama quarterback in 2012 said that the coaches knew every play that ND would call . Probably when we call them ? We were predictable plus our offensive line blocking ? This year Clemson ,maybe had predictable plays? But they seem to confuse the Alabama defense which somehow was not prepared .

If, through the magic of imagination, we take Saban and his staff and place them at ND, and we take BK and his current staff and place them at Alabama. Could we imagine that ND would now, under Saban, become the suddenly five star rich super power and Bama falls into the abyss of mediocrity/ pretty good program under BK?

Tough to predict what may or may not happen in anyone game, But Bama, Osu, and a few other teams have been consistently good for a number of years like ND used to be many years ago.
Until ND become a consistent winner, we are no where near closing the gap.

Saban's accomplishments would lift ND considerably. Whether he could do, at ND, what Harbaugh and Meyer have done is questionable. Bama would return to the Curry years.

ND 2012 one of the best teams ever. Manti controversy was a distraction for him. Kelly and Diaco shopping for new jobs before the game and the distraction. Excess heat down in Miami which players werent used to and the bad call by the ref in the 1st quarter on the fumble no fumble call which stopped any momentum. If the stars were realigned and no shenanigans off field, I say it would have gone down to the last minute.

As far as Alabama, they and Ohio State are just on a different level than the rest of the country, talent-wise. Clemson just had a great couple of years, but not sure if they'll be as good without Watson.

Agree with your Alabama and OSU statement but all of that talent does not ensure championships however. What deep talent and sick recruiting classes do however, is pretty much guarantee that teams like Alabama and OSU are right in the thick of it every year. Do they lay an egg in games - sure they do. But I would be very surprised to see either team in the foreseeable future with more than - at the max - 2 losses in a season.

It wouldn't be pretty. 35-6. Maybe 35-10. ND couldn't run on them and would be facing an average of 3rd and 8 all game long.

Why couldn't we run on them with McGlinchey, Nelson, Bars, etc., and our RBs? We have a very talented offensive line.

I think our biggest problem would be our defense trying to stop them.

Alabama is on another level than Ohio state in my opinion. Saban is the best to ever do it in college period. Urban is top 15

What Harbaugh has done at Michigan? That would be nothing. No Big 10 Title 0-2 vs Ohio State. Purse rides Jimmy Boys jock strap more than Mrs. Harbaugh!!!!

Keep up the high quality jock sniffing fan boy.

Cmon now youre telling me Harbaugh isn't a great coach? We forget that BRIAN VAN GORDER shut out Michigan a few years ago

R1950 has it right . Alabama with all their talent is a perennial power ,always in the hunt for the National Championship .We are not .

a lot of Harbaugh bashing, in spite of how he has made UM a contender again.

Maybe a wager between UM/ND head coaches would add to the rivalry. How about the loser in 2018 has to get the final score tattooed on himself in a spot choice of the winning coach.

ND will not close the gap completely on Alabama as long as Saban is there. He is too good a recruiter. We with our limitations cannot match up all the way.

NOW we can recruit sufficiently to be competitive with them. BUT only as long as we are relatively injury free. THAT is the difference; depth.

Wow. What is your time frame for the start of "ever"? Does the year start with a "2"? And I can only assume you did not attend the game, because there was absolutely no problem with the heat for either team. It wasn't that hot.

No way. That team couldn't have held bama's jock strap. And you'd think they'd change their ways and try to play power ball play action and tough defense but they go even more finesse.
