Clay Helton now the Perm. HC at USC

Or going somewhere else.

As a domer this hire pleases me though. Think he is no better than what they just fired. But still sucks to see them down.

Beach, I wondered about this possibility since the team seemed to play hard for him, and at the time, you were of the strong opinion that Haden had to make a big splash hire. Wonder if the UCLA game tipped the scales and created a groundswell of support, or whether this is being widely criticized?

I never thought that it would happen. I knew for a fact they were talking to Kelly last week and hope this should something. Boy was I wrong. Another lazy incompetent hire from a lazy incompetent AD. You are right to celebrate, you have wins assured for two years until we fire him. UCLA couldn't be happier. Some Bruin poster are even saying Mora threw the game to assure Helton hiring (Too far out for me.) Anyway toguh day here. I will probably cancel may don\r seats so it anyone is looking for seat on the 50 yard line 20 rows up at SC let me know.

Basically we hire a guy we almost no head coach experience who is 4-2 having never won a game we wasn't favored in. He has a very good chance of en ding up 4-4 by season end. Truly hard to imagine this degree of incompetence.

But...to get to something happier. Congrats to you on a great season. I know Stanford was a disappointment but you played a top ten team in their house to the bone and barely lost on a silly penalty. It happens. The only good thing is that with the other wins it wouldn't have moved you into the final four anyway. I know some are upset, but with the injuries I was impressed with you r team. Good luck in your bowl game.

Beach,

We are Domers. No one over the age of 40 understands bad coaching hires than we do. Jerry, Davie, Weis, O'Leary, and the mother of them all.......... Willingham.

Best of luck in whatever happens. Although I do almost wonder if they aren't just keeping him for now because there is a bigger plan. Rather that is keep him for this year, and fire him after all of the coaching crap from this season disappears. Or maybe Haden is on his way out and they want the next AD picking the coach.

Welcome to ND circa 1997-2010. All kidding aside, SC needs to take a page from ND's woes and hire a guy with two HC stops in CFB where he has turned a program around.

No doubtt. But first we need to rid ourselves of Haden. That should happen before year end.

Thanks Beach for your always classy and objective posts. Sorry to read the reaction to this hire, and hope it proves misplaced, as college football and ND are better served by USC being an annual top ten team, just never want to go back to the level of success you enjoyed with PC. (Don't sell your season tickets, and instead sell me next year's ND game!)

Seems like a short-sighted decision. What if they had lost to UCLA? What if they lose the Pac 12 title game and their bowl game? That's 8-6.

Beach, Helton may be fine. You do not know. he comes from good Football bloodlines unlike the silver spoon kiffen. He has a solid resume. He is old enough and has enough experience. And you are better off than getting Chip Kelly. Chip is very quirky person. He's wear out his welcome soon enough at SC. I think Helton will probably be a very good coach. LEt him do his thing and see what happens. I dont count his Oregon loss as a bad loss. SC was decimated w/ injuries for that game - your two inside LB out - the Oline banged up very bad w/ only a couple of starters playing. IT was a makeshift Oline for that game. And trying to stop Oregon O w/ two new LB is not going to happen, Oregon w/ Veron healthy are a whole diferent team. He now has some games under his belt and has finally created some much needed chemistry w/ his skill player teammates. U guys had no shot vs. Oregon that day. U actually hung around longer than I though w/ all the adversity you had to endure that day.

Beating UCLA was a great win. Helton my turn out all right.

This is as good of hire from an ND perspective as we could hope for. Helton has done a decent job but not good enough to be hired NOW in my opinion. I could see it if they exhausted the search but come on. SC is a top job in the country and this like giving the keys of a Ferrari to an 18 year old. He may do great, but if I'm SC I'm looking for someone with experience.

Beach - I wonder what the rush was? Was he about to get hired somewhere else? I know recruits want stability but SC will always get its recruits and waiting a little longer to see who else may be interested should have happened in my humble opinion. Then again I am sure feelers had been sent out to all of the other top choices.

How much do you think this decision was based on recruiting and keeping the recruiting class together? Not saying I follow SC but there seems to be no other reason they would jump to a decision so quick - thoughts.

Odd that they didn't wait until after the PAC title game to make their decision. He wins, and you hire him. He loses, you look for someone else. Trojan fans are going to be pissed if he loses his first game as the permanent head man.

Beach,

You and I have never interacts, but I always appreciate the civility you show when so many come here and show their a#*.

I think Helton will do a good job and I'm a bit surprised that so many USC fans are so don on Haden. I'm a strange ND fan in that I want USC to in every game but against our Irish team.

Good luck and don't sell your tickets, this too shall pass.

Bet Haden got a great deal on Cyber Monday. 50-75 percent off special. Thanks Pat.

Jumbo to USC? You're nuts!

With all the dirt on his hands with off the field issues, the rumors about his drinking and his marital issues I don't think USC would want that problem; they are not crazy! SEC schools might be able to pull it off, but USC still has some pride in how they are represented and Jumbo is a disgrace.

A lot of thoughts above:
1, thanks for the complements
2. There was no rush, no one else was trying to hire him. When I heard of this yesterday I didn't believe it because it made no sense not to wait. If (when) Stanford rolls us we will go to Sun Bowl and maybe win there. This is our new standard?
3. The guy is four and two and has never won a game where he wasn't favored.
4. For those say it is good news: well it is, if you just want to win. If you want to beat quality opponents, it isn't such good news.
5. No recruits are coming to SC because of Clay, if fact he isn't a good recruiter. Losing him would have cost us nothing.
6. As always, the length of time of a coaches contract doesn't matter, it is the buyout clause that matters.
7. I have heard that Pat may step down soon and wanted this done.

This was the wrong year to be in the market for a coach. Many openings out there.
This year would be like bidding for a #1 starter in MLB. Teams will way over-pay for the "big" name hires. What a year to be a CFB agent.

So in other words pure speculation on your part. Got it.

If the report was correct that they both were interested and talked, not much in the way of speculation. I would love to hear your alternative reason for not making the deal...

I called that the moment SS went swimming in the bottle.

It's the right choice.

Well he has the recruiting base so it will be interesting but I personally thought Kelly would have been a big hit so he must be staying in Philly, going to the Titans, or looking at another college program. Of course even if he gets fired from the Eagles he doesn't need to coach, he can sit out and wait for the position he wants because on the college level he can basically pick his spot.

Either way USC will be fine and you guys have a big weekend coming up so best of luck.

Apparently the mods at SC site are working overtime deleting all posts of fans b' ing about the hire .... Hilarious

hardly. any program would be lucky to land a coach of jimbos caliber.

Good for him. However, with no HC experience, we'll see how it works in the long run.
