I have a very different take on this news... I AM ECSTATIC!
I love Lou. It goes without saying he is on the Mt. Rushmore of ND coaches. Having gone to ND during his tenure, I had the chance to meet him and interact with him several times, including a couple speeches. He is one of the smartest people I have ever met. As he'll say, maybe not book smart, but quick witted and a very good reading and working with people. It's no wonder his players would literally run through a wall for him. He is a master motivator, not only in football but in life.
That's the problem. At ESPN, he wasn't Lou Holtz. He was Dr. Lou, a completely fabricated character. Have you every heard him break down a game, outside of on the air at
ESPN? He is simply brilliant in discussing football - when he is
discussing football. On ESPN, I would watch him and the only thing I recognized was the quick wit, smile and lisp. Sure, he had to play the role as foil to Mark May, but it was BENEATH HIM! It hurt me to watch this caricature of an all-time great.
So I look forward to getting more Lou - outside of ESPN. And if he sails off into the sunset in retirement, than I wish him the best. He earned it.
