And you clearly have never coached or played a snap of football leather helmet or not. Nyles Morgan struggled with his role. So ONE player struggling with his understanding means the entire defense is too complicated? If one student out of 11 fails an exam, does that mean the exam was too difficult or does it mean that one student needs to study and prepare harder?

From all accounts Jarrett Grace knew this defense and all the checks that went along with it, So if Schmidt can figure it out, and Grace can figure it out, why couldn't Morgan. It is DIVISION 1 FOOTBALL BABY!!!!!!!! You do not dumb things down to accommodate a few stragglers. You tell them to get up to speed or get the hell off the field. Unfortunately Morgan was the only option in 2014. Hopefully recruiting more depth gives BVG and Brian Kelly, more and better options.

As I stated only Jaylon Smith and Sheldon Day could of cracked the line up at Alabama. That means Alabama has better players at 9 of 11 position, ND's defense is complicated? Really? Alabamas defense was taught to Nick Saban when he was Bill Belichick's DC for the Cleveland Browns.

My guess is Alabama has a pretty complicated scheme, and they are teaching it to players with far less mental capacity then ND players, yet somehow they make it work. Why? Because they are bigger, stronger, faster and simply better players. Keep clinging to delusional star rankings and this fantasy about 1. Eyes Up 2. Head Across 3. Bend Your Knees 4. Shoot your hands 5. Run your feet and presto!!!!! Top 10 defense.

I've taught tackling every season for the last 20 years. the team with the better players win 90% of the time at every level. Want better defense, get better players. Want to win 12 games instead of 10. Get better players, want to make the Final Four get better players. ND has top 4 coaching, but it has Top 10-15 talent. Which BTW is a heck of lot better than the trash that was put on the field from 1997-2009

Why bother comparing our defense to Alabama's? Most players on most teams will not start for that team so it is a waste of time even making the argument. Let's be real here though : almost every starter on our defense last season is considered an NFL prospect. You mean to tell me that a team chock-full of NFL talent should resort to playing mediocre at best football on the defensive side?

Giving up close to 4 touchdowns a game the last two seasons with 4 stars up and down the roster is an embarrassing job by BVG. We easily have what it takes to be a top 15-20 based on talent. If friggin BC can field a top 5 defense I don't want to hear excuses why we barely field a top 50 defense!

Coaches are in the business of trying to predict what is going to happen. You are also a liar, I never apologized for the performance of BVG. How many championships have you won? I don't want to hear about you being an assistant to some coach who won multiple titles. What have you done at the helm? Name your school, your career record as head coach, the number of conference and/or national titles won (if you coach college) or state titles (if high school). There was plenty of talent on the field this year to be good to very good overall. Do you consider your scouting ability to be superior to both Rivals and NFL scouts? You may, but I don't.

Question : How was it that Diaco coordinated a top 20 defense (including #2) every year but one at ND ? Has our talent level dropped so much since he left? Show me the evidence please.

In regards to Alabama....

ND nor pretty much every school in the country will not and cannot be on that level. Just a pipe dream to even entertain the possibility, really. The way they over-recruit, grey-shirt, have looser academic standards, and reside in such a talent rich part of the country gives them way too much of an advantage over us.

With that being said, there is no reason we cannot have a defense on par with what BC (BC for God's sake!) or Michigan had this past season. Take into account both our talent level, which was outlined vividly above, and the experience, and it's hard to find the results reasonable for 2015.

However, he reminds me of many of the coaches I worked with or dealt with as a parent or when I coached in pop warner, CYO, and High school level. when things do not go well its never his fault always the kids fault. His ideas are supreme. and his ideas are always correct. If he posted with a little humility and was nice he would be easier take.

we often see these faux lineups posted, and on paper each player at each position looks very solid and or dependable. But games are not played on paper or message boards.
The parts of the sum, for the recent seasons, are much greater than the sum of the parts. Defense is about playing as a unit.
