Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey holds a national reputation for his team's quality offense.
CBS Sports conducts an annual "Candid Coaches" series in the summer (link), in which they poll college coaches anonymously on a variety of questions, including recruiting and other college basketball topics.
Regarding the question "who is the best offensive coach in all of college basketball?", Brey tied with Vanderbilt's Kevin Stallings for 5.6 percent of the receiving votes - ranking the two tied for seventh on the list.
Michigan's John Beilein led the list with 16.9 percent of receiving votes, followed by Davidson's Bob McKillop (13.4 percent), Wisconsin's Bo Ryan (12.4 percent), Gonzaga's Mark Few (11.3 percent), Duke's Mike Krzyzewski (7.9 percent), and BYU's Dave Rose (6.8 percent).
"He [Brey] is very good at putting his guys in position with where they could succeed," an anonymous coach said. "I had a conversation with him at a camp and told him you're one of our favorite coaches to watch. He said one of the things he thought he did a really good job of was meeting with Pat Connaugton and Jerian Grant and dictating what the team was going to do in practice. They were seniors, four-year guys, and knew what he wanted. They always were in the right position at the right time. They were very close to beating Kentucky with only a rotation of seven guys."
Brey's squad finished with the nation's No. 2 most efficient offense in 2014-15, according to Kenpom.com's rankings. They also finished in the top ten nationally in 2011 (2nd) and 2010 (7th).
Him and Krzyzewski were the only two ACC coaches to receive multiple votes. Brey's squad beat Duke in two of three head-to-head matches in the 2014-15 season, including a 74-64 win in the ACC semifinals.
"Coach K has won a title with no great post presence and also won another when his best player was a true center," an anonymous coach said. "He changes everything on offense to maximize his personnel. Calipari does that too. But Coach K is the best at it."
