You want to talk about Coach Rees designing a play on scratch paper up in the coaches booth to react to what the Purdue defense is doing to Mike Mayer? Look no further to the 65 yard TD pass to Avery Davis. Mayer ends up with only 1 catch because he is doubled all game long. Great adjustment here to set up a 1 on 1 play for Davis.

It is 3rd and 8 and ND comes out in a empty formation. Williams comes back into the backfield, which resets the linebackers to a 4-2-5 nickel quarters coverage. Mayer is left alone into the boundary, as he is flexed out of the formation. On Coan's drop he is reading the safety over the top of Mayer and he quickly realizes they are going to double cover Mayer. 2 wide outs run short routes to hold their defensive backs leaving Davis 1 on 1 with the safety on a deep post route. With how everything plays out on this play Coan knows Davis is running vs. a cover 0 concept now.

Up front Correll and Patterson do a great job on a twist stunt up front. Madden has no one attack him, which gives him freedom to go help Lugg on #5. Baker is 1 on 1 with his defensive end. With young offensive tackles sometimes you tell them to get set up quickly and ride the end where they want to go. Baker's guy goes to far up field and ends up slipping as he is to deep to get to Coan. The end result is a great pocket for the Coan to Davis TD strike all thanks to the presence Mayer brings every down.
