Have an extra drink and a laugh y'all. We're average at best, but we have a hell of a QB and a coaching staff who clearly didn't trust a single receiver not named Torii Hunter down the stretch... Won't miss a game this year but I'm already excited for 2017, a new DC and new hope.

God Bless guys. Luckily there is more to life than football.

Ah IIO my lad. You speak as though you can see through the crap that is on our eyewear smart man u r Kelly proves once again he is just above average good enough to keep his job badd enough to piss the fan base off only an AD would tolerate his garbage we are not a good team, above average maybe but when you handicap the players with no game plan , we are as you say, average at best

Brian made a mistake at DC, plain and simple. I don't obsess over that. We'd still be 1-0 with Bob Diaco as our DC (and I didn't support his hiring in the beginning). I've spent a lot of time around college staffs and they aren't perfect. BVG needs a pink slip, sadly Todd Lyght may need the same, but we'll have next year to look forward too. Hoping we finish as a 10-2, top 15 team' led by Kizer and a developing offense.

Let's hope recruits are not watching this steaming pile called bvg

Tend to think you are right on all counts. Wanted BVG cut last year, but entered this season thinking he had his recruits and his guys in the system for a couple years, and was cautiously optimistic for a good defensive team. Afraid we're in store for another year of poor tackling, poor deep coverage, and poor pressure.

As for Kelly, been a long time supporter and appreciate the positive impact he has had on the program on many levels. Have to admit his halftime interview blew me away, and wondered for the first time whether his stubbornness and sense of loyalty are a net negative. Thought one of us was watching a different game.

Going forward, expect the offense to put up a lot of points, and the defense to give up a lot; much like last year. Entered the season thinking 10-2 was a high probability, and now the 8-4 crowd is looking more accurate. Losing sucks, but losing when the HC stubbornly holds onto an alternating QB scheme when one has the hot hand and the other doesn't, sucks beyond words. If Kelly gets the credit for his .703 winning percentage, he sure gets the blame for this loss more than most.

Said this was a kinda rebuilding year. 2017 is our year. We just lost too much to the NFL and BVG just has't worked out. Wish we could let him go now so this young defense could work with a coordinator who could get them ready for next year. Say what you will, gutsy comeback, but once again, our defense just dug us a hole that was too big to get out of... Kizer and the O-line and those running backs and receivers will only get better. (Can't say that about the d -- BVG should have been gone two years ago -- that was a debacle (USC) and ASU -- anyway, we have some great players on this team but if BVG didn't have the denfese ready with the horses he had last year, he never will -- tonight just proved that. how many sacks did they have? how many did we have -- case closed. Go Irish.

Ask yourself this question -- Who would hire BVG as D coordinator now? Who would hire Sanford as O coordinator? Black hole for first question Long list for second

To me it seems coach Kelly has never put a lot of stock in a DC aside from coach Diaco. Look at UCM,UC Unlike coach Holtz I don't believe coach Kelly can take over the defensive side the way coach Holtz did. This is the area that separates coach Saban, and Meyer from him

It's almost like you read my mind! I was just telling my wife last night that I can at least just "watch" the season and not get all worked up about rankings and playoffs (PLAYOFFS!?!). Let the whiskey flow and watch the games while "comfortably numb" is the game plan for this Irish fan for 2016!

They are, they should be. But watch Wisconsin play. They don't have half the talent on paper as ND's defense. Nor does TCU. It's all Bout who you hire and if they get it.

Funny things can happen over a single game or two (small sample size) ... but when was the last time either of those programs won enough games over the course of their schedule to make it to and/or won a national championship?

Kelly needs to demote BVG and either take over the defense or hand it to someone else. I've said for years now one of BK's biggest mistakes was being being too involved in the offense because that left the DC with complete autonomy. With Diaco we had a very good defense but HUGE holes in recruiting because he would only take 'certain body types'. With BVG we are seeing a DC that is far too complicated to ever work.

The problem in both instances is Kelly is far too involved with the offense to have serious input on defense and that has to change. IMO, Kelly should have oversight on both sides but not overly involved day-to-day. It was clear last year BVG was not a good DC but Kelly decided to keep him.

Tough one to lose but I agree IIO -- one week at a time now, have a few IPAs and enjoy. I was disappointed by our run blocking and once again by our lack of rush and push from the D-line. Our secondary again looked lost (better in the 3rd quarter) but that has been BVG's MO -- think Clemson last year. Before we had a chance we're down two TDs. Why is our d never prepared? There are some good teams who will test us this season.

Losing Redfield was a KILLER and of course if Will Fuller came back we beat them by 17-21 pts last nite .

This isn't plug and play anyone who thinks it is is delusional . After watching last nite this was NOT going to be a playoff team this year . I agree next year is when we make a run. The wide receiver and secondary positions need a year of maturity/experience -- time takes time . All the bitching in the world won't speed up the maturation process

for perspective four teams go to the college playoff not forty . There are too many parts to replace this year for a playoff to be in our future this season .

Like everyone else I wanted 12-0 always have always will , but that will have to wait .

Good news is for all the 8-4 nit wits along with cvgr , purse and company they get to masturbate all over their keyboards this week -- carry on nit wits .

Next year, next year. I love your optimizum, but damn it's been next year for 28 years now. Hey I love my school, but honestly I don't see ND winning a national championship again. CFB has past us by. We are not now, and never will be, a football factory. And that is the way CFB has gone.

a bright side to all of this is that our irish still have a great shot at being 2-1 toward the end of September. Nevada should be a very winnable game next weekend and plus mich st looked really bad on offense Friday night considering they were playing furman who are a non div 1 school

I think the sooner the better for a new DC. Speaking of terms in recruiting anyway. Obviously we cannot fire a coach at the beginning of season but Kelly had better be actively, but quietly, be searching for a new DC even in the middle of the season. The least time between firing/hiring the better. Kelly needs to hit a home run with this hire also or he’ll be on the hot seat. I’m tired of ND standing for No Defense!

The people who really care are venting tonight - the Kool aid crowd are losers period
So let me get this straight.

If you "really care", you need to bitch, piss, and moan. Venting is reactionary and I understand the frustration. Just because you're complaining doesn't mean you care more than others.

Some of you act as though ND lost to some directional school. That was Texas if I recall correctly, and they beat Oklahoma and Baylor last year. They do have talent.

Are you going to bail on the team after one game? What does that prove? Also, as usual, if some of you want CK fired then whom do you have in mind? And please be realistic.

I don't think anyone is happy about the performance of the defense last night. Let's see how the rest of the season plays out. If there's no improvement and they lose another 3 games then I would say that BVG needs to go. I'm not a fan of firing a coordinator after one game.

I'm not a BVG fan by any means, but in in 2014, the defense was shredded by injuries in late 2014 and Everett Golson's endless turnovers didn't help.

There are two issues with our defense: coaching and talent, but a good coaching staff would get a lot more out of these players.

Notre Dame was 10-2 last yr and 12-0 in 2012 . They may go 10-2 this season in what is really a bit of rebuilding year .

Good post, as usual. Just wondering which candidates you would consider for DC. Chuck Martin was a successful DC prior to his gig at ND. He may be out at Miami of Ohio at the end of the season. I like Venables, but can't see him coming to ND. Would Bud Foster leave Vieginia Tech? I doubt it. I have to believe BVG will not return next season.

When people tune in to ND games, they see young men who are developing outstanding character and have made smart 40-year decisions and who overachieve in academics. Sort of like the Ivy League or the service academies. They'll see above average football too, but the days of being a top football program are long gone. It's not going to magically happen next year -- we pretty much know what we're going to get.

I think, yeah, generally, ND fields decent human beings on their athletic teams, but there have been more than enough instances to question whether they are all of high character the past three years.

I think you miss the point when it comes to us 8-4 nit wits. I for one will not be soiling my keyboard.

I think there are many different types of college football fans; two broad groups are realist and idealist. The realist look at the team, analyze the schedule and predicts a reasonable outcome based what they see. Idealists see the same things, but for reasons of hope, loyalty, or just because it makes the season more fun, they chose to believe an undefeated season is always attainable. Undefeated seasons are rare events, even at football powerhouses like Alabama and osu. Undefeated seasons at ND have become very unlikely for a variety of different reasons discussed ad nausem on this board.

I would not criticize an idealist for their optimism, but I might say something about blind faith in light of the current state of affairs.

Losses are just as disappointing to the realists, I don't celebrate 8-4 with a toast of vive cliqot

My point is Kelly is doing a great job at ND -- I consider all of this toxic horseshit after losses infantile nonsense

I don't kiss a coaches ass after a win but calling for his job after a loss - an overtime loss in the first game of the year @ Texas is bull shit . Nits wits on this board who wouldn't even know how to run a practice calling for a guys job after one loss - sickening .

If a coach can't go undefeated every five yrs he should be replaced - check got it !!

Not calling for bk's head, just calling for bk to fire bvg

Nitwit s on this board aren't paid 4 million plus a yr to hire a d coordinator to get it right . Expecting a D to keep opposing teams under 35 in most games shouldn't be pie in the sky at Notre Dame. It's become a joke. It's all legit criticism after 7 yrs and into yr 3 of this D.

If I ever fell off a cliff and one of our defensive guys got a hold of me, I wouldn't get my hopes up.

They cannot hold on to the ball carriers. How many times did we make contact in the backfield only to let them slip away?
