Yes. Leahy left on his own accord in 1953 according to everything I've ever read about him. Health issues have always been cited as the primary reason.
You are correct. Father Hesburgh is on the record as saying he didn't force Leahy out, but recommended to him that he retire for the sake of his health. Leahy was consumed by coaching and Fr. Hesburgh thought he would eventually kill himself.

Ara did the same at age 51.

Lou Holtz left Notre Dame because of Father Monk Malloy who, IMO, ruined Notre Dame Football.

Malloy then hired Bob Davie, Tyrone Willingham, and Charley Weis.

Not that simple. Lots of issues going on there at the time. NCAA at his doorstep yet again, internal issues with his staff and the performance on the field was well below expectations. He was certainly burned out. High profile jobs do that to a lot of coaches.

I was a student at ND when Ara retired. His decision caught everyone by surprise, but one of my roommates was a manager for the football team and said Ara was just completely burned out by the job.

What I remember most about Leahy, aside from the unbelievable record he compiled as head coach of ND--six undefeated seasons, four Nattys, an unbeaten string of 39 games, and four Heisman Trophy winners--was that he always referred to his players as the "lads." Kind of endearing. Rockne, Leahy, Ara and Holtz are my personal Mount Rushmore of ND football coaches. Maybe there will be room up there someday for Marcus Freeman. That would be my hope.

I remember it well. Also remember the rumors that started to swirl around campus in about 1976, after Devine led teams had a couple mediocre seasons. It was all over that Devine was going to be fired and that Don Shula was going to be named HC at ND. Multiple "reliable" sources were saying this. Ah, the good old days.

Yes! I also remember the Don Shula rumors. I was graduated by then, but I remember hearing all about the rumors. Wonder if there was a shred of truth to them, or just some wishful thinkers throwing stuff out there? I heard later that some of the rumors started after Moose Krause and Shula were spotted playing a round of golf together. Those were long before the days of the internet and social media. Lord knows what a circus it would be like today.

My guess is that it was 100% rumors and wishful thinking. One of the main points brought up at that time was that Don Shula was a devout Catholic and went to Mass every day. I have no idea if this was true, but I heard it many, many times.

I heard the same.

According to this story published in 2020 when Shula died, he did attend Mass on a daily basis, and his Catholic faith was very important to him:

I do know that. Sorry to poke holes in your ridiculous assumptions.
You don’t know that, you don’t know whether an entirely new contract was drafted or if an addendum was added to the existing contract.

If both parties were satisfied with the prior contract, why would there be a need to rewrite it, as opposed to just adding an addendum ?

Stay in your lane

Jenkins. Jenkins succeeded as President and fired Ty. We never got a reliable account of whether and why Jenkins thought that he would hire Urban Meyer.

Kevin White was AD at Notre Dame from 2000-2008 and fired Ty (one of NDs worst 8 year stretches probably ever lol) but I did like that KW oversaw one of the best 3-4 year stretches of recruiting during the latter part of his tenure (back to back to back top 5 classes from 2006-2008)

It seemed like ND was willing to spend more aggressively during that time (they used to top the charts in recruiting budget and Charlie Weis' contract was a market setter at the time). It seems like ever since the bad contracts KW was responsible for ND clamped down tight on any big investments from a football operations/personnel standpoint and have been very apprehensive to open the purse back up since.

So clueless

I know that you’ve told me that I’m uninformed and know nothing about football, Notre Dame and how to spell, but I’ve known “Monk” since 1961 and I never had to spell his name when we spoke, and I’ve only known Pete Bevacqua since 2001 and again, I never had to spell his name when we spoke.

I entered Notre Dame as a chemical engineering major so I probably should have paid more attention to spelling, now I’ll just have to proof read my posts when I dictate them so that you don’t get confused or miss the gist.
If you “dictate” your posts Dorothy why do they have to be in bold?

The firing process may have gone through AD White but Jenkins made it no secret that when he ascended to the office he was replacing Ty.

I recall a lot of bitching about White and the football team's training program/facilities but there was really only one media game in town back then.

It wasn't an addendum. It was a negotiated item. You don't want to discuss contracts with me. As usual you're not nearly as accurately informed as you'd like to think you are. Read more and post less and you just might learn something if you choose to.

You just proved what a total moron you are.

For a self proclaimed contract expert, how could you not know that the production of a contract or the production of an addendum to a contract are both the result of “negotiations”.

Who knew ? ? ?

Well, you’re right about one thing, I can always learn more by reading, but not from reading anything that you write.

Oh wait, I did learn something ……… contracts and addendums to contracts are the result of negotiations !

What an amazing revelation ! ! !

So it’s easier to see the typos
That’s not making much sense Dorothy as you stated “now I’ll just have to proofread my posts” which means you weren’t before…wait, let me add an exclamation point at the end !

It makes all the sense in the world, have someone with the brain explain it to you !

Were you always a sniveling whiner ?

If you're as old as you claim to be shouldn't your juvenile name calling be a thing of the past ? Seems like a lot of insecurity to me.
Oh, I get it, so now you’re gonna play the victim.

You can’t come at me and not expect me to respond.

When you make allegations or try to demean me and/or my character, you can’t expect me to remain silent.

And when I respond and refute your allegations, you can’t complain that you got your nose bloodied in our exchange ……… because you started it.

So if you’re gonna give it out, you better be prepared to take it.

That’s fair, isn’t it?

Just let that little insecure girl out!!! Until then keep taking your Midol…just increase the dose significantly

I feel your pain and I completely understand why you’re jealous and why you find the need to try to build up your poor self-image and your own lack of self-esteem by whining and directing your feeble derogatory comments toward me.

3Daughters, is that how people who know your family refer to you, your wife and daughter ?

No surprise there

I'm sorry, I have to interject here. That was a very good zinger, your final parting shot. I'm going to remember that one. 'Have somebody with a brain explain that to you'. Indeed, we should all be so lucky. To have a brain, so you can properly make sense of things. Or in lieu of that, have somebody else who's got one explain it to you.
It's the Scarecrow Effect.

My wife and daughters are embarrassed that they are the same gender as you, they don’t want to claim you either…

I thought Trump put an end to men identifying as woman, but I guess your family didn’t get the message

Well ……… to each his own
