All-American Rhett Lowder lived up to his billing, pitching seven strong innings, as fourth-ranked Wake Forest took game 1 of a Saturday doubleheader over visiting Notre Dame, 4-1.
The Demon Deacons flexed their hitting prowess in game 2, though four Irish errors contributed significantly to the lopsided 12-3 score.
In game one junior righty Lowder, one of the top pitching prospects heading into this summer’s Major League Baseball Draft, allowed three hits, an earned run and a walk while fanning seven. He lowered his ERA to 1.74. Camden Minacci got the final four outs for his fifth save,
Marek Houston’s RBI triple in the bottom of the fourth gave Wake Forest (18-2, 4-1 ACC) the lead for good. Jackson Dennies (0-2) took the loss for the Irish (8-8, 1-4).
Irish freshman Estevan Moreno collected two of Notre Dame’s five hits and drove in the only Irish run. Right fielder Brook Coetzee was hit by a pitch Saturday for the 17th time this season, which leads the nation.
In the nightcap, junior Tony Lindwedel's two-run, ninth-inning homer wasn't nearly enough to rally the Irish. Zack Prajzner drove in the other ND run. Nick Kurtz went 3-for-4, scored three runs and drove in two for Wake.
Six of Wake's 12 runs were unearned. A bright spot for the Irish was freshman pitcher Caden Spivey. He logged three innings of work in relief of starter and loser Matt Bedord (1-2).
Spivey allowed two hits and one earned run in his three innings, He didn't walk anyone and struck out two. His season ERA is at 1.50.
