BAS: Irish thump Clemson, 10-4, in game 1 of their ACC series

Vinny Martinez’s two-run double highlighted a six-run third inning as Notre Dame took control early and thumped host Clemson, 10-4, Friday night in the first of a three-game ACC baseball series.

Jack Penney and Brooks Coetzee each went 3-for-5 for the Irish (18-12, 8-8 ACC), with Penney scoring two runs and Coetzee knocking in three. TJ Williams hit a two-run homer in the fifth.

Freshman Caden Spivey pitched two innings of shutout relief to pick up his first collegiate win and lower his ERA to 1.88. Clemson (20-15, 4-9) has dropped six straight in its all-time series with the Irish.

Sophomore lefty Jack Findley (4-1, 2.82) gets the start for Notre Dame in game 2, Saturday at 4 p.m. EDT.
